In addition to countless exhibitions and awards, in March 2011 di Suvero was honored with the National Medal of the Arts by President Obama in a White House ceremony. This exhibition, organized by UMMA and on view exclusively in Ann Arbor, features approximately 15 of di Suvero's rarely exhibited smaller scale pieces, or tabletops, from the 1950s to the present. The tabletops are not maquettes of larger-scale works but an expressionistic and engaging genre all their own, an outlet for exploring ideas relating to the calligraphic nature of form, balance, proportion, and movement. The OpenEnded Group shot over 10,000 images of every detail of the plant, then used these as raw material to create the completed composition. The resulting 20-foot projection captures the enormity of the site: the vastness of deserted corridors, the sheer drops of stairwells, and the incongruity of the open sky. Recorded ambient sound punctuates the piece with scattered signs of life and the unsettling randomness of events. Yet, like any law, it is limited. Inequities continue inside and outside of sport\u2013inequities that are beyond the direct legal reach of Title IX. Misunderstanding the limits of Title IX has ironic effect. On the one hand, it can fuel a backlash that blames Title IX for problems associated with some men's sports. On the other hand, it can lead to advocates of women\u2019s and girls\u2019 sports to overemphasize Title IX as the pivotal site for gender equity strategies. Drawing in part from recent research on youth sports, Messner will shed light on the cultural impact, limits, and possibilities of Title IX. \r\n\r\nMichael Messner is professor of sociology and gender studies at the University of Southern California. His teaching and research focuses on gender and sports, men and masculinities, and gender violence. In 2010, the USC Center for Feminist Research released the most recent update of his longitudinal study, Gender in Televised Sports: News and Highlights Shows, 1989-2009. He has published several books, including, most recently, Out of Play: Critical Essays on Gender and Sport (SUNY Press, 2007), and It's All for the Kids: Gender, Families and Youth Sports (California, 2009). Messner is currently researching men who work with boys and men to stop gender-based violence. In 2011, the California Women's Law Center honored him with its Pursuit of Justice Award, for his work in support of girls and women in sport.\r\n\r\nThis lecture is hosted by the SHARP Center (Sport, Health and Activity Research and Policy Center for Women and Girls), the School of Kinesiology, and the Institute for Research on Women and Gender, with additional support from the Center for the Education of Women, the Gerald R.
