This exhibition, organized by UMMA and on view exclusively in Ann Arbor, features approximately 15 of di Suvero's rarely exhibited smaller scale pieces, or tabletops, from the 1950s to the present. The tabletops are not maquettes of larger-scale works but an expressionistic and engaging genre all their own, an outlet for exploring ideas relating to the calligraphic nature of form, balance, proportion, and movement. In addition to changes in their social security systems, many countries implemented \u00a0\u201d\u02dcChilean model\u2019 defined-contribution schemes based on individual pension savings accounts. Many studies have explored why countries adopted these reforms, but few have asked how stable they have \u00a0been. \u00a0This presentation analyzes political \u00a0stability from an institutionalist perspective. \u00a0It examines whether more majoritarian and polarized \u00a0countries experience greater change or fluctuation over time than consensus polities. One hypothesis is that majoritarian polities may adopt greater reform initially, but fail to sustain it as excluded groups \u00a0later come to power. This proposition is tested with case study evidence from four countries: Croatia, \u00a0Hungary, Poland, and Slovenia, showing that more inclusive institutions \u00a0can support radical and durable change.\r\n\r\nIgor Guardiancich earned his PhD in Social and Political Sciences at the European University Institute in Florence. His doctoral dissertation and subsequent work are on the political economy of reforms in Central, East and Southeast Europe as well as post-socialist and pan-European social policy. His most recent publications include articles in West European Politics, East European Politics & Societies, and International Social Security Review. His book, Pension Reforms in Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe: From Post-Socialist Transition to the Global Financial Crisis, will be published in 2012 by Routledge. This recognition was fueled in part by the realization that replicated sampling within lineages is necessary to fully describe evolutionary relationships and in part by the further realization that different genomic regions are expected to yield different gene trees despite the same underlying divergence history. As such, most empirical studies, especially those interested in the relationships among closely related species, use multiple individuals per lineage in combination with multiple loci to make inferences about evolutionary histories. As these multilocus data sets increase coverage of the focal genomes, however, they are likely to include non-neutral regions. I examined the extent of this problem for inference of evolutionary relationships among 11 species of soft pines (Pinus subgenus Strobus) using a 167 nuclear gene data set. First, patterns of non-neutral evolution were examined using standard tests of neutrality based on the site-frequency spectrum and polymorphism-to-divergence ratios. Second, species-level phylogenies were inferred using standard approaches based on the reconciliation of gene and species trees. Finally, effects of non-neutral evolution on the inference of species trees were examined empirically and through simulation. The results to date are consistent with the idea that non-neutral evolution impacts inference of species-level phylogenies and that the recalcitrancy of this clade to phylogenetic resolution is due partially to signals of natural selection.
