Fluxus emerged in the early 1960s as a loose, international network of artists, composers, and designers-"led" by Lithuanian-born American artist George Maciunas (1931-1978)- that was noted for blurring the boundaries between art and life. Fluxus artists like Maciunas, Nam June Paik, George Brecht, and Yoko Ono, among many others, challenged the notion of high art by creating unassuming, often humorous objects and performances that redefined the terms of artistic production by demonstrating the idea that "anything can be art and anyone can do it." Because of their disregard for traditional artistic media, many of the objects in the exhibition are-often by design-acutely resistant to conventional forms of museum display. Variously conceived as carriers of ideas, absurdist send-ups of consumer products, and invitations to direct, playful participation by the viewer, these works attempt to undermine the idea that art is separate from the activity of living one's life. Through 116 works, Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life will introduce visitors to the study and appreciation of art as an exciting and intellectually rewarding experience, and to the notion that art is something that can play an active role in their own approaches to life's essential questions.

This exhibition was organized by the Hood Museum of Art and was generously supported by Constance and Walter Burke, Dartmouth College Class of 1944, the Marie-Louise and Samuel R. Rosenthal Fund, and the Ray Winfield Smith 1918 Fund. UMMA's installation is made possible in part by the University of Michigan Health System, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Arts at Michigan, and the CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.
This is the first part of a two-part exhibition introducing exciting, recently acquired works from UMMA's collections gifted to the museum during the past five years. Recent Acquisitions: Curator's Choice, Part I presents a first look at artworks, mostly prints, drawings, and photographs by artists as diverse as Annie Leibovitz, Edward Steichen, and Rembrandt van Rijn. Carole McNamara, Senior Curator of Western Art, chose works that focus on some of the enduring and compelling themes that have occupied artists in Europe and America. One is the preoccupation with the human form as an expression of ideas, feelings, and sensations. This selection begins with the tradition of the academic nude study and progresses to embrace different genres, from both secular and religious contexts. Another selection-landscapes and cityscapes-are each opportunities for artists to speak to our relationship to the natural world-both in how we experience landscape as well as how we construct our own urban environments.

This exhibition is made possible in part by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.
The tiny dramas that comprise Robert Wilson's Video 50 contain aspects of his hallmark aesthetic: surreal or dream-like imagery, the absence of a linear narrative, the conflation of seemingly unrelated characters and micro-stories, and a mesmerizingly slow pace. Video 50 consists of a randomly arranged set of 30-second "episodes," a few of which feature notable French personalities of the 1970s-perfumier Hélène Rochas stares down a mugger, culture minister Michel Guy struggles to open a dresser drawer-and Wilson thought of these as miniature portraits or character studies. The creator and director of aggressively experimental theater, Wilson first came to prominence with works from the mid-1970s such as The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973) and Einstein on the Beach (1976). These lavish, unusually long productions broke and then redefined every convention of theater. In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.",

Love is Louder has now spread across the country and beyond with hundreds of thousands of people joining the movement online or in their communities. In 2012, The Jed Foundation is expanding Love is Louder through technology, grassroots efforts, celebrity partnerships and campus-based programming. During this keynote, Brittany and Courtney Knowles will share the Love is Louder story -- how it started and what they learned watching an idea expand to touch so many lives. They will also share how the Love is Louder brand and the resources can help you engage your students around a range of issues including mental health conditions like depression, bullying and mistreatment, self-image and community.
Abstract
We examine the theoretical and practical implications of ranking teachers according to a one dimensional value-added metric when teacher effectiveness is multi-dimensional. In particular, we consider the cases in which teachers teach multiple subjects or multiple student types. We outline the assumptions under which a standard value-added estimator correctly ranks teachers according to their social value. We demonstrate that these assumptions fail to hold empirically. This causes value-added based pairwise rankings of teachers to be often misleading, though the consequences of these ranking errors for students is small. We demonstrate that when teachers vary in ability across student types or subjects, student outcomes can be improved by matching teachers to students or subjects according to their comparative advantage. Our calibration suggests that these gains exceed those associated with firing the bottom 10 percent of teachers.

Professor Lars Lefgren specializes in applied microeconomics with a number of papers in the economics of education. He received his undergraduate degree in economics from Brigham Young University where he earned Magna Cum Laude. Professor Lefgren obtained his PhD in business economics from the University of Chicago. He is married with four children.
This lecture introduces the music and culture of qin, an ancient
Chinese instrument with a millennia-long history. With a technical emphasis on the various ways to touch, stop, and strike the strings, qin music explores the richness in timbre as no other instrument does. Through a unique system of notation, education, performance, and
appreciation, the qin tradition encourages personal interpretation in the re-creation of music and brings down the division between
composer and player, thus opening the door for the creation of
various regional and stylistic schools. Qin shares common aesthetic and spiritual ideals with other traditional cultural forms such as
poetry, calligraphy, and painting. The philosophy behind qin music and the physical and conceptual environment for the appreciation of the sound and silence are closely connected with the literati art and
culture of East Asia.

Shuishan Yu is a fourth generation Mei’an School qin player,
Professor of Art History at Oakland University, and Chair of North America Mei’an Guqin Society. He has inherited much of the styles and masterpieces from the traditional repertoire, and added many unique personal interpretations. Yu teaches qin at Oakland and performs widely in China and the US. He is developing a new system in qin
education by creating a series of fingering-specific studies, and
composing new qin music based on classical Chinese literature.

Masterpieces of qin music will be performed during the lecture,
including:

关山月 Moon over the mountain pass

é…’ç‹‚ Drunken madness

平沙落雁，九嶷派 Wild geese descending on the beach, Jiuyi School

平沙落雁，梅庵派 Wild geese descending on the beach, Mei’an School

流水 Flowing water

Music, narration, and a stunning video create an entertaining window into one of the most exciting periods in the history of western civilization. Galileo’s Daughters, an ensemble based in New York City, is inspired by the lives and works of Galileo Galilei, his daughter, Maria Celeste, and the musicians and scientists of their time. Their story is told in a multimedia program, with four performers combining storytelling, songs, instruments, and striking visual images. The program, "Perpetual Motion: Revolutions in 17th-Century Science & Music," is narrated by Dava Sobel, author of the book Galileo’s Daughter.

The relationship between science and the arts was taken for granted in the 17th century. Galileo was a mathematician, physicist, and astronomer; but he was also an accomplished lutist, studied fine art, and taught perspective and chiaroscuro. Even today, a talent for math and music often overlap.

Support for this performance is provided by the Hudson Family Fund with fond remembrance of Martha and John Arthos.

On display during the event will be the library's Galileo Manuscript, a draft of a letter Galileo wrote in 1609 that includes diagrams and notes explaining the position of Jupiter on several nights.

Dr. David Lisak provides the keynote address. False stereotypes and misconceptions about who rapists are and how rapists behave are pervasive, and they undermine a community's ability to respond effectively to sexual violence. The vast majority of rapes - including those committed on college campuses - are committed by serial offenders whose crimes are characterized by extensive planning and premeditation, the frequent use of alcohol and other drugs to render their victims vulnerable, and the use of intimidation rather than overt force. Only by confronting the reality of this sexual violence can communities and institutions effectively respond to sexual assault cases, and promote prevention strategies that will ultimately reduce their prevalence.

Dr. Lisak is an associate professor of psychology at the University of Massachusetts Boston where he conducts and supervises research on the causes and consequences of interpersonal violence.

Also sponsored by Abuse Hurts - University Human Resources, UMHS Social Work Department.
Lúnasa is an Irish traditional band with a rhythmic difference. Rhythm–their ingenious application of it, and their clear mastery of it–has made Lúnasa the single most influential and innovative band performing Irish instrumental music today. What Lúnasa has accomplished in their now decade-plus career has deeper precedent in jazz and progressive bluegrass, and has made them unique in Celtic circles. Simply put, Lúnasa welds the ancient soul of traditional instrumental Irish music to a new rhythmic framework, one which breaks down the barrier between soloist and accompanist and creates a dynamic polyphony that preserves the dignity of their sources while placing the band firmly in the modern age. From day one, the double bass of Trevor Hutchinson (formerly of The Waterboys) has been the band’s fulcrum. The presence of more young Irish bands featuring the double bass – a relative stranger to the genre–is testament to Hutchinson’s commanding presence on the instrument and his ability to invent an integral role for it where once there was none. Lúnasa comes to Michigan with a new release, "Lá Nua."
",
