It has served as a resource for thousands of people the world over, from high school students to seasoned researchers, from young activists in search of their roots to documentary filmmakers unearthing eye-catching images. Books, serials, manuscripts, pamphlets, photographs, audio recordings, posters, and political buttons are all part of this eclectic group of materials.

View the exhibit during Audubon Room hours: Mon-Thurs 8:30am-7pm, Fri 8:30am-6pm, Sat 10am-6pm, Sun 1pm-7pm
Fluxus emerged in the early 1960s as a loose, international network of artists, composers, and designers-"led" by Lithuanian-born American artist George Maciunas (1931-1978)- that was noted for blurring the boundaries between art and life. Fluxus artists like Maciunas, Nam June Paik, George Brecht, and Yoko Ono, among many others, challenged the notion of high art by creating unassuming, often humorous objects and performances that redefined the terms of artistic production by demonstrating the idea that "anything can be art and anyone can do it." Because of their disregard for traditional artistic media, many of the objects in the exhibition are-often by design-acutely resistant to conventional forms of museum display. Variously conceived as carriers of ideas, absurdist send-ups of consumer products, and invitations to direct, playful participation by the viewer, these works attempt to undermine the idea that art is separate from the activity of living one's life. Through 116 works, Fluxus and the Essential Questions of Life will introduce visitors to the study and appreciation of art as an exciting and intellectually rewarding experience, and to the notion that art is something that can play an active role in their own approaches to life's essential questions.

This exhibition was organized by the Hood Museum of Art and was generously supported by Constance and Walter Burke, Dartmouth College Class of 1944, the Marie-Louise and Samuel R. Rosenthal Fund, and the Ray Winfield Smith 1918 Fund. UMMA's installation is made possible in part by the University of Michigan Health System, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost, Arts at Michigan, and the CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.
The tiny dramas that comprise Robert Wilson's Video 50 contain aspects of his hallmark aesthetic: surreal or dream-like imagery, the absence of a linear narrative, the conflation of seemingly unrelated characters and micro-stories, and a mesmerizingly slow pace. Video 50 consists of a randomly arranged set of 30-second "episodes," a few of which feature notable French personalities of the 1970s-perfumier Hélène Rochas stares down a mugger, culture minister Michel Guy struggles to open a dresser drawer-and Wilson thought of these as miniature portraits or character studies. The creator and director of aggressively experimental theater, Wilson first came to prominence with works from the mid-1970s such as The Life and Times of Joseph Stalin (1973) and Einstein on the Beach (1976). These lavish, unusually long productions broke and then redefined every convention of theater. In Video 50 his shorter time-based portraits explore the intersection of narrative and still-life, seductively dissolving the distance between viewer and subject.
“Guided by experimental tests of theory and practice, science has advanced rapidly in the past 500 years.
Guided primarily by tradition and dogma, science education has remained largely medieval.
Taking a research approach to teaching science
and engineering is now revealing principles and
practices that achieve much better learning than
traditional approaches. The combination of this
research approach to instruction has set the
stage for a major advance in undergraduate
science and engineering education, an advance
that can provide the relevant and effective
education in these fields for all students that is
needed for the 21st century. I will discuss the
failures of traditional educational practices, even
as used by “very good” teachers, and the
successes of some new practices and technology
that characterize this more effective approach. I
will also discuss how these results are consistent
with basic principles of learning coming from
cognitive psychology and hence are widely
applicable.”

~ Dr. Carl Wieman
Mehmet Yashin, Poet and Author.

Mehmet Yashin (Yaşın) is one of the best-known contemporary poets and authors from Cyprus. The different voice and sensibility that he brings to Turkish poetry is based on his hybrid literary sources, combining the Turkish, Greek and Levantine cultures of the Mediterranean. His books have played an important role in re-defining the literary traditions of Cyprus and Turkey. His first poetry collection, which won the Turkish Academy Prize, was banned by the Turkish military junta and he was deported from Turkey in 1986. He has published Toplu Yazılar: 1978-2005, (Collected Essays: 1978-2005) and edited the volume, Step-Mothertongue: From Nationalism to Multiculturalism Literatures of Cyprus, Greece and Turkey (2000). He created a space for Turkish-writing Armenian and Jewish poets of Turkey, as well as Macedonian, Kosovar and Bulgarian poets and suggested the term “Turkophone Literature.” His work has been translated into more than 20 languages and his books have been published in various countries. Mehmet Yashin is currently writing two books dealing with Mediterranean cultures. The first is to be published in French, La recontre de Sapho et Rumi (La Refuge, Center International de Poesie – Marseille, 2012). The second book is a novel, Kehribar (Amber), and combines forms of memoir, travel writing, notes on a photo album and narrative poems. The novel is set in the Levant between 1906-1966 and 2007.

Co-sponsored by the Mediterranean Topographies Workshop, Rackham Graduate School, Institute for the Humanities, Departments of History of Art, History, Linguistics, Comparative Literature, Romance Languages and Literatures, Modern Greek Studies, CMENAS, CES.
Species interactions are key determinants of evolution in natural populations. Population and community ecology has focused on the impacts of both negative and positive interactions on patterns of community structure and microevolution. However, the impacts of species interactions on broad-scale macroevolutionary patterns across the tree of life remain unclear. For example, all current phylogenetic models of diversification and trait evolution assume that evolution along each branch in a phylogenetic tree is independent of evolution along every other branch - an assumption that precludes any kind of species interactions. I will describe new comparative methods that are designed to investigate the signature of species interactions on macroevolution using phylogenetic comparative data. I will focus on two key questions: Can we detect the influence of species interactions on patterns of trait evolution? and How do species interaction networks evolve?
The persistent Black/White achievement gap in Education has been a source of concern for many years. Although many other factors contribute to it, one that has not attracted sufficient attention is the African American Vernacular English [AAVE] spoken by many African American students, and more importantly, the negative responses of teachers and administrators to it. The predominant response of teachers and administrators to AAVE has been that of the ostrich–burying their heads in the sand, and hoping that by ignoring and failing to acknowledge it, the vernacular would quietly disappear, with mastery of mainstream or standard English miraculously replacing it. An alternative response has been that of the elephant–acknowledging the vernacular, but attempting to stamp it out with proscription and vigorous correction. Neither approach has been particularly effective, as shown by data from more than thirty years of research. This talk will discuss in turn the more promising responses that sociolinguists and applied linguists have proposed to the challenges facing vernacular speakers in schools. The primary solutions include: Dialect Awareness, Dialect Readers, Contrastive Analysis, and Linguistically Informed Pedagogy (including individualized and group instruction based on systematic studies of phonemic decoding errors). Although some of these responses invariably bring public misunderstanding and controversy in their wake (recall Oakland’s 1998 Ebonics resolutions), they show promise for narrowing the achievement gap, and are worth serious consideration and implementation.
Based in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, the Steel Wheels are truly an Americana band, rooted in musical styles that explore the territories among blues, bluegrass, old-time sing-alongs and foot-stomping fiddle tunes. They are subtle innovators who respect the past but make their own tunes. The Steel Wheels fit among musicians like Langhorne Slim and Gillian Welch, who've made a name for themselves by creating their own particular permutations of traditional forms. Yet they also share much with new Americana favorites like the Avett Brothers or Old Crow Medicine Show, with charisma that causes toes to tap and energy to break out. The Steel Wheels count among their fans former Statler Brother Jimmy Fortune and indie folk favorites Over the Rhine, as well as Robin and Linda Williams, who sing harmony on their album "Red Wing." Says John Walker of Americana Roots: "Imagine a blend of the passion of the Avett Brothers, the instrumentals of Old Crow Medicine Show, and then sprinkle in the backwoods feel of The Legendary Shack Shakers. In truth, attempting to compare [the Steel Wheels] to anyone is an injustice, since after one listen you can hear that they stand very well on their own perch." After a bike tour that began at The Ark last year, the Steel Wheels are coming back with new and as-yet-untitled new music!
",
