Between 1998 and 2004, eleven parliaments in the European Union (EU) debated whether to regulate prostitution at the national level, imposing a single definition over something that had, until then, been regulated by cities. The Netherlands and Germany legalized prostitution, recognizing \u201csex work\u201d\u009d and imposing workplace standards. Sweden and Finland, on the other hand, abolished prostitution from the public sphere and, in Sweden\u2019s case, criminalized the purchase of sex. Though these policies are sharply at odds, both regimes rationalized prostitution by imposing a single national definition that overrode the old systems of community discretion.\r\n\r\nGreggor Mattson is an assistant professor of sociology and law and society at Oberlin College where his research investigates the public regulation of private behavior. This talk is excerpted from his book manuscript interpreting recent European conflicts over prostitution regulation, research that was funded in part by the National Science Foundation and a Fulbright Scholarship to the European Union. In face-to-face dialog, listeners can \u201cshort-cut\u201d\u009d this process by following the speaker\u2019s gaze directly to get cues about which objects he\/she is planning to mention.\r\n\r\nThus gaze serves as a useful visual cue for grounding and disambiguating linguistic interaction. This talk will discuss recent research which seeks to better understand the importance of gaze for situated dialog in human-computer interaction. The first part of the talk will focus on how eye gaze of both robots and virtual agents influences the way people understand their speech. Then we will discuss ongoing research which exploits the real-time gaze of human users in order to improve the automatic generation of spoken directions, as users seek to navigate their way through a virtual environment.
