SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents A Study in Nature: Gelatin Silver Prints by Darryl Baird
DESCRIPTION:Darryl Baird is Associate Professor of Art at U-M Flint in graphic design and photography. This body of photographic work is a series of highly magnified plant sections offered as homage to natural life cycles and the inherent potential for beauty in mature forms. These images are a means to explore the cycles of all living things and a way to find understanding through the process. For this series\, Baird used antique lenses and the now discontinued Polaroid Positive/Negative 55 film. His work is included in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Art\, Museum of Fine Art in Houston\, Texas and U-M Museum of Art in Ann Arbor.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Connections: Linoleum Block Prints by Elizabeth Busey
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Busey has been inspired by global travel to explore the forces that shape our world – growth\, pressure\, erosion and decay. Through this exploration\, she highlights patterns from many disparate perspectives in order to celebrate their universality in the natural world. Her work is created by printing multiple layers of ink onto cotton rag paper\, where a single linoleum block is gradually reduced with each color layer. Busey is a primarily self-taught printmaker who produces her work in Bloomington\, Indiana on a press made of recycled steel.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Michigan Union Art Lounge to see this art exhibit featuring landscape oil on canvas paintings from some of the most beautiful places in Michigan. \n\nExhibit: “Beautiful Michigan” - Landscape Paintings\, Oil on Canvas\n\nArtist: Anil Dhir\n\nArtist Statement:\nFor a painter\, Michigan offers one of the most beautiful landscapes\, whether here in Ann Arbor\, up-north or anywhere else. These paintings are my attempt to capture some of the Michigan beauty. I believe that a great painting is a like a beautifully composed piece of music. My wish is to create a painting with a simple aim of honestly capturing the very essence of what I saw\, and be able to make the viewer feel what I felt. (To read the full artist statement\, please visit campusinvolvement.umich.edu\, it is also posted with the exhibit.)\n\nThe exhibit will be displayed until Friday\, October 5th.\n\nAll pieces in the exhibit are for sale. Please contact the Center for Campus Involvement (uminvolvement@umich.edu) if you are interested in purchasing art from this exhibit.\n\nPlease note: The Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) provides opportunities for student and professional artists to display work suitable for a general audience. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Canan Tolon Installation: Time After Time
DESCRIPTION:Canan Tolon’s paintings and installations serve as visual records of the passing of time. Each swipe captures the gesture as well as the memory of the gesture\, now already in the past. Each panel appears to duplicate itself beyond any final tally\, proliferating in the room.\n\nUpon first glance\, Tolon’s constructs evoke a sense of freedom in their repetition. They appear infinite\, suggestive of vast open spaces\, like the modern landscapes viewed out of a train window\, or the documentary film reels from the mid- twentieth century. They draw us in\, inviting our dreams and interpretations. In this momentary introspection\, we contemplate our own histories.\n\nThen\, like the first day of any highly anticipated tomorrow\, after the proverbial summer full of expectation”¦expecting things to change\, to be different\, to be new again\, we are struck with a profound disillusionment\, stranded in a place full of promise that never delivers. In a turn\, the world of photographic familiarity Tolon has created collapses in on itself. – Amanda Krugliak\, arts curator\n\nThis Institute for the Humanities original installation was made possible by the generosity of the 2012 Kidder Residency in the Arts. The installation is based on Canan Tolon’s observations and experiences during her time in Ann Arbor\, and many of the materials used are salvage materials from her visits to Detroit architectural yards. \n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:(FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC) In this presentation\, Professor Morioka will introduce the concept of “persona” that he has come to understand through the process of examining ethical issues in brain death and organ transplants in Japan. A persona is something that sometimes appears to exist on the body of a brain-dead patient\, and people who have had a close relationship with the patient can perceive its existence. Interestingly\, we can find a similar concept in Tetsuro Watsuji’s essay “Mask and Persona” published in 1935. Utilizing the perspectives of Watsuji’s philosophy\, Professor Morioka aims to pursue an analytical discussion on current topics in bioethics.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nMasahiro Morioka is a Professor of Philosophy and Ethics at Osaka Prefecture University in Japan\, and is also the Editor-in-Chief of the \"Journal of Philosophy of Life.\" He specializes in life philosophy\, life studies\, bioethics\, gender studies\, and criticism of contemporary civilization. His books include \"Brain Dead Person\" (1989 in Japanese) and \"Painless Civilization\" (2003 in Japanese).\n

SUMMARY:Other:The Public's Love/Hate Relationship with Epidemiology: The Burden of Being Relevant
DESCRIPTION:David A. Savitz\, Ph.D. Joining us from Brown University\n\nThe public's interest and responsiveness to epidemiologic findings has many advantages for the discipline and for public health but also poses challenges to managing expectations. The ways in which epidemiology's home in the real world affects the discipline will be discussed\, along with revisiting the relationship of epidemiology to public health policy and practice. A detailed case study from a National Research Council committee that was formed to address health effects of contaminated drinking water at Camp Lejeune\, North Carolina illustrates the complexity that arises when epidemiology intersects with a range of interested parties.\n\n Sponsored by Department of Epidemiology\nContact Information: Stacy Babcock (babcockk@umich.edu)\n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Upcoming CBSSM & Decision Consortium Seminar\, September 20th: Ellen Peters\, PhD
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for the next Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine seminar in conjunction with the Decision Consortium\, scheduled for September 20\, 2012\, at 3-4:30 pm\, 4448 East Hall (Main Campus\, corner of S. University Ave & Church St.). Ellen Peters\, PhD\, will present a talk entitled\, “Informed choice and the construction of preferences.”\n\nAbstract: Having consumers and patients actively involved in making informed choices is good. However\, the effects of increased patient involvement are not well understood. Because preferences are sometimes constructed\, unintended consequences can ensue. I will briefly discuss what is needed to make an informed decision and some of the barriers that exist to effective communication of critical information. Understanding the psychological mechanisms that underlie how people understand and use information is key to developing general principles concerning how to improve decision making.\n\nDr. Ellen Peters is Associate Professor of Psychology at Ohio State University and studies decision making as an interaction of characteristics of the decision situation and characteristics of the individual. She focuses on how affective\, intuitive\, and deliberative processes help people to make decisions in an increasingly complex world. She has three major strands of research. First\, her research interests in decision making include number processing and the study of individual differences in numeracy and an intuitive sense of numbers. A second central strand of research concerns how affect and emotion influence information processing and decisions. Third\, she is interested in how information processing and decision making change in complex ways across the adult life span. She is also generally interested in issues of risk perception and risk communication in health\, financial\, and environmental contexts\, including how to present information to facilitate its comprehension and use.\n\nLight refreshments will be provided. We hope to see you there!\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Modern vertebrate faunas are dominated by ray-finned fishes (Actinopterygii)\, tetrapods and sharks (Chondrichthyes). However\, biotas at the origin of tetrapods\, during the Devonian period (420-359 million years ago\, My) were defined by now-extinct or depauperate groups such as lobe-finned fishes (lungfish and coelacanths). It was long thought that this turnover was caused by gradual forces and the greater fitness of living lineages. A comprehensive global database for early vertebrate diversity\, analysed using methods from community ecology\, has pinned this turnover to the supposedly minor end-Devonian Hangenberg mass extinction event (359 My). Global vertebrate faunas were destroyed and 44% of major clades lost\, restructuring ecosystems and permitting the rise of the modern vertebrate biota from scarce survivors. However\, recovery from the Hangenberg event was long and arduous\, coincident with “Romer’s Gap\,” a previously unexplained lull in tetrapod diversity. While some groups thrived and radiated (e.g.\, actinopterygians)\, members of once-diverse groups became “dead clades walking\,” the extinct equivalent of “living fossils.” In addition\, there was little replacement of lost lineages: survivors tended toward novel forms and niches. Thus\, conditions during aftermath of the Hangenberg extinction had as much of an impact on subsequent biodiversity as the event itself. The new challenge is explain this record of differential success. The new opportunity is to re-examine the impact of other\, perhaps neglected external events on vertebrate biota past and present.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Canan Tolon Installation: Time After Time\, Opening Reception
The installation is based on Canan Tolon’s observations and experiences during her time in Ann Arbor\, and many of the materials used are salvage materials from her visits to Detroit architectural yards.\n
