SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents A Study in Nature: Gelatin Silver Prints by Darryl Baird
DESCRIPTION:Darryl Baird is Associate Professor of Art at U-M Flint in graphic design and photography. This body of photographic work is a series of highly magnified plant sections offered as homage to natural life cycles and the inherent potential for beauty in mature forms. These images are a means to explore the cycles of all living things and a way to find understanding through the process. For this series\, Baird used antique lenses and the now discontinued Polaroid Positive/Negative 55 film. His work is included in the collections of the Detroit Institute of Art\, Museum of Fine Art in Houston\, Texas and U-M Museum of Art in Ann Arbor.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Connections: Linoleum Block Prints by Elizabeth Busey
DESCRIPTION:Elizabeth Busey has been inspired by global travel to explore the forces that shape our world – growth\, pressure\, erosion and decay. Through this exploration\, she highlights patterns from many disparate perspectives in order to celebrate their universality in the natural world. Her work is created by printing multiple layers of ink onto cotton rag paper\, where a single linoleum block is gradually reduced with each color layer. Busey is a primarily self-taught printmaker who produces her work in Bloomington\, Indiana on a press made of recycled steel.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Honoring the Career of Bunyan Bryant: The Legacy and Future of Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:The \"Honoring the Career of Bunyan Bryant: The Legacy and Future of Environmental Justice\" conference pays tribute to Professor Bryant\, who is retiring after 40 years of service to his field\, the School of Natural Resources and Environment and the University of Michigan. Throughout his long career\, he not only helped define the field and movement but has always advocated for the people behind it. The conference's purpose is to pay tribute to his contributions while offering attendees new thinking from leading activists\, academics and government leaders. The event takes place nearly 30 years to the month since the historic Warren County landfill protest in North Carolina\, which many consider the start of the modern Environmental Justice movement.\n\nThe conference will have keynote speakers and breakout sessions\, culminating with the production later this year of a whitepaper spelling out an action plan for the movement. This is Bunyan's clearly articulated goal for the conference: a concrete work product that lives beyond the life of the conference and serves and informs the work of activists and academics in the years ahead.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Beautiful Michigan
DESCRIPTION:Visit the Michigan Union Art Lounge to see this art exhibit featuring landscape oil on canvas paintings from some of the most beautiful places in Michigan. \n\nExhibit: “Beautiful Michigan” - Landscape Paintings\, Oil on Canvas\n\nArtist: Anil Dhir\n\nArtist Statement:\nFor a painter\, Michigan offers one of the most beautiful landscapes\, whether here in Ann Arbor\, up-north or anywhere else. These paintings are my attempt to capture some of the Michigan beauty. I believe that a great painting is a like a beautifully composed piece of music. My wish is to create a painting with a simple aim of honestly capturing the very essence of what I saw\, and be able to make the viewer feel what I felt. (To read the full artist statement\, please visit campusinvolvement.umich.edu\, it is also posted with the exhibit.)\n\nThe exhibit will be displayed until Friday\, October 5th.\n\nAll pieces in the exhibit are for sale. Please contact the Center for Campus Involvement (uminvolvement@umich.edu) if you are interested in purchasing art from this exhibit.\n\nPlease note: The Center for Campus Involvement (CCI) provides opportunities for student and professional artists to display work suitable for a general audience. CCI hosting an artist’s work does not mean we endorse the artist’s point of view\; we recognize the free speech rights of our exhibitors.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Canan Tolon Installation: Time After Time
DESCRIPTION:Canan Tolon’s paintings and installations serve as visual records of the passing of time. Each swipe captures the gesture as well as the memory of the gesture\, now already in the past. Each panel appears to duplicate itself beyond any final tally\, proliferating in the room.\n\nUpon first glance\, Tolon’s constructs evoke a sense of freedom in their repetition. They appear infinite\, suggestive of vast open spaces\, like the modern landscapes viewed out of a train window\, or the documentary film reels from the mid- twentieth century. They draw us in\, inviting our dreams and interpretations. In this momentary introspection\, we contemplate our own histories.\n\nThen\, like the first day of any highly anticipated tomorrow\, after the proverbial summer full of expectation”¦expecting things to change\, to be different\, to be new again\, we are struck with a profound disillusionment\, stranded in a place full of promise that never delivers. In a turn\, the world of photographic familiarity Tolon has created collapses in on itself. – Amanda Krugliak\, arts curator\n\nThis Institute for the Humanities original installation was made possible by the generosity of the 2012 Kidder Residency in the Arts. The installation is based on Canan Tolon’s observations and experiences during her time in Ann Arbor\, and many of the materials used are salvage materials from her visits to Detroit architectural yards. \n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:(FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC) Like countries in the West\, Japan is struggling with the problem of how to manage economic growth with demographic decline–falling birthrates and aging populations. Unlike Western countries\, however\, Japan is facing this struggle without the benefits (and costs) of mass immigration. This presentation will describe recent research exploring the roles and challenges of low and high-skilled migration to Japan\, and the possibilities for finding substitutes for immigration. We can understand Japan’s unique approach to immigration by understanding the intellectual or philosophical assumptions behind its policymaking\, and contrasting those with the philosophies of immigration in the West\, particularly the United States.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nJohn D. Skrentny is Director of the Center for Comparative Immigration Studies and Professor of Sociology at the University of California-San Diego. He has published widely on immigration and civil rights issues. His latest book is \"After Civil Rights: Law and the Meaning of Race in the New American Workplace\" (forthcoming).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series as part of the Rackham Centennial Lectures
DESCRIPTION:Many invertebrates benefit from the metabolic inputs of specialized symbiotic bacteria\, which contribute nutrients\, structural components\, and defenses against environmental threats. Insect symbioses show dramatic variation. At one extreme\, ancient\, maternally inherited symbionts that provision essential nutrients to hosts have tiny and static genomes that endure ongoing\, irreversible losses of genes and functional capacities overevolutionary time. These are exemplified by Buchnera aphidicola in aphids and by other nutritional symbionts of insects ranging from bloodfeeding flies to cockroaches. In these systems\, gene losses by symbionts can be partially compensated by acquisition of new symbionts or\, to a limited degree\, by coadaptation of hosts. More transient associations with heritable facultative symbionts can provide temporarily useful products\, such as defenses against natural enemies that change over time. \n\nAt the other extreme\, gut symbionts exist within more diverse microbial communities in which related strains may have frequent recombination and gene transfer resulting in highly dynamic genomes and the potential for acquisition of novel capabilities in response to new environmental pressures. The gut symbionts of honey bees and bumble bees are of special interest because the sociality of these insects enables reliable inter-individual transmission and has given rise to a distinctive\, specialized microbiota. These bee-associated bacterial species are likely to have evolved with their hosts for 80 million years. In contrast to the reduced genomes and clonality of anciently acquired maternally inherited symbionts\, species of honey bee gut symbionts occur as complexes of closely related\, recombining strains that vary in gene content and functional capabilities. This enables them to respond to novel environmental conditions such as changes in food or environmental toxins. Initial genome-based studies of the bee gut microbiota provide evidence for roles in defense and digestion and support the view that gene uptake by symbionts is pivotal in determining their effects on hosts. \n\nSponsored by the UM Museum of Zoology Donald W. Tinkle Memorial Fund

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:John McMillian\, \"Notes from the Underground: The Rise and Fall of the 1960s Underground Press in America\"
DESCRIPTION:This lecture is part of a series of events leading up to the October 31-November 2\, 2012 conference\, \"A New Insurgency: The Port Huron Statement in Its Time and Ours.\" Free and open to the public.\n\nAbstract: This lecture will assess the cultural work that was accomplished by the New Left's printed materials – especially its underground newspapers. I argue that New Leftists created an ethos surrounding their publications that socialized people into the Movement\, fostered a spirit of mutuality among them\, and raised their democratic expectations. Given the obstacles confronting those who have attempted to build mass democratic movements in the United States\, this was no small thing. Additionally\, I'll discuss the degree to which the political energy that fueled the New Left arose from the grassroots\, as opposed to the national office of Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) or the pageantry and intellectual ferment that accompanied the New Left rebellion in large cities. In this way\, my work is part of a larger revisionist effort to reassess the New Left through the techniques and methodologies of social and cultural history.

SUMMARY:Performance:Nervous But Excited
DESCRIPTION:Pleasantly aggressive folk music!\n\nThe \"pleasantly aggressive folk duo\" Nervous but Excited offers dead-on harmony: two songwriters (Kate Peterson and Sarah Cleaver)\, two singers\, two guitars\, a mandolin\, a violin\, a few harmonicas\, some vaguely choreographed dancing\, and a lot of laughter. Their original repertoire ranges in topic from smart\, introspective narratives to the tactfully political\, and they still dabble in the love/post-love variety of song every now and then. Since 2004\, Nervous but Excited has released four full-length albums and four EPs\, and they've landed on stages with folks like Ani Difranco\, Iron and Wine\, Utah Phillips\, Ben Gibbard\, Catie Curtis\, and Cheryl Wheeler. Nervous but Excited has been one of Michigan's great success stories in recent years\, but they're going on hiatus in 2013\, so come on out and see them while you can! Inaugural Women's World Poetry Slam winner Andrea Gibson\, whose work deals with war\, class\, gender\, bullying\, white privilege\, sexuality\, love\, and spirituality\, opens the show.
