SUMMARY:Exhibition:Bowling\, Burgers & Dogs: Digital Color Photography
DESCRIPTION:After receiving a BFA from Rutgers University\, Denise Rohde went on to study photography with renowned photographer Art Sinsabaugh at the University of Illinois. SUMMARY:Exhibition:One Acre Ceramics: Handcrafted Stoneware
DESCRIPTION:Thomas and Sarah Gelsanliter are full-time ceramic artists creating unique handmade tiles and pottery at their studio\, One Acre Ceramics\, located in southeastern Michigan. Thomas received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002\, and his intricate designs are influenced by historical furniture\, industrial plate ware\, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah is largely self-taught as a potter and spent a year living in Japan\, visiting studio potters throughout the country. She throws all of the pottery on the wheel\, finishing and assembling each piece when partially dry. A palette of luminous glazes highlight the hand-carved designs and crisp lines\, giving each piece a polished\, radiant finish. \n\n1500 E. Medical Center Drive\, Ann Arbor\, MI 48109

SUMMARY:Exhibition:African Art and the Shape of Time
DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. Additional support provided by the CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. McCrindle Foundation\, the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and Office of the Vice President for Research\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, and THE MOSAIC FOUNDATION (of R. & P. Heydon).\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Discovering Eighteenth-Century British America through the William L. Clements Library Collection
DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Jesper Just: \"This Nameless Spectacle\"
DESCRIPTION:Visitors encountering Danish artist Just’s exhibit will find themselves captivated in stages\, as the experience of viewing it unfolds over time. In this breathtaking installation\, as in much of his work\, Just situates the viewer in his signature landscape of beauty\, provocation\, and a general uneasiness that is as seductive as it is ominous. The storyline is at once deceptively simple and perplexing: a wheelchair-bound protagonist travels through a neighborhood in the outskirts of Paris to her apartment\, while a young male character appears to follow her. Once home\, she is able to leave her wheelchair but is overcome by a powerful seizure. One of Just’s unique strengths is his ability to engage the viewer in an open-ended\, unresolved narrative in a manner that is more intriguing than frustrating. It is impossible to parse but equally impossible to abandon\, and this is the essence of Just’s gift for hypnotic storytelling.\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES
DESCRIPTION:The Seoul-based art collaborative\, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries (YHCHI) is known for innovative video works that exist at the nexus of visual art and digital literature. Known as “hikikomori”\, they are modern-day hermits who disdain social contact and are unable to work or go to school for months or even years. Using the lens of a physician–but also careful to consider psychological\, social\, and cultural factors at play\, Dr. Teo reviews the nature\, scope\, and ramifications of this epidemic of social isolation. He further considers whether hikikomori exists elsewhere in the world and what we can do to address the problem.\n\nAbout the Speaker:\nAlan Teo\, M.D.\, is a psychiatrist and researcher at the University of Michigan. SUMMARY:Other:The War of Translation and the Friendship Among Languages: American English\, Colonial Education and Tagalog Slang\, 1920s-1970s
DESCRIPTION:This paper seeks to inquire into the Filipino nationalist critique of American colonial education as a kind of counterinsurgency effort\, whereby the teaching of English meant the repression of vernacular languages. Such amounted to a war of\, as well as on\, translation. I then ask if there is an alternative to this colonial and nationalist conception of translation as war and turn to the question of Tagalog slang as it is theorized by the renowned novelist Nick Joaquin. For Joaquin\, what emerges in the history of Tagalog slang is a different politics of language. It is one based on translation not as war but as play\, along with the conversion of history into language less as a means of democratizing society but as a way of expanding literary democracy.\n\nCo-sponsored by the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures\, the Department of Comparative Literature\, the LSA Theme Semester in Translation\, the Department of History\, the Center for Southeast Asian Studies\, and the Language Resource Center.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Art exhibit displays work of SNRE's Sara Adlerstein
DESCRIPTION:Sara Adlerstein\, a research scientist who uses statistical modeling to investigate ecosystems\, also embraces art as a way to understand nature.\n\nAn accomplished artist with many gallery showings to her credit\, Adlerstein will display her work starting Nov. 8 in the Dana Building’s Art & Environment Gallery. Her show\, ”Water Blues” begins with a 4 p.m. talk by the artist\, followed by a reception. The exhibit and talk are in the Ford Commons\, on the main floor of the Dana Building.\n\n“In my world\, art and science belong together as naturally as air and water. Both inform my work “influencing my approach\,” Adlerstein said. “Observation\, experimentation\, improvisation\, making comparisons\, searching for patterns and answers all come together within the creative process. As such I have developed my own mixed media techniques and my research influences the subject of my paintings. The process has been magical\, nurturing and informative.\n\nAdlerstein is an applied aquatic ecologist within the Conservation Ecology field of study at SNRE. She obtained a master of science degree at the University of Concepcion Chile and a master of science and Ph.D. at the University of Washington. \nHer work focuses on environmental stressors affecting Great Lakes ecosystems. She did not pursue academic training in the arts but she has been painting for as long as she has been a scientist.\n\nAt the University of Michigan\, she has taught courses bridging arts and sciences at the School of Art & Design and the Residential College\, and has organized and participated in events to immerse the arts within the endeavors of a research university. Her works have been published in books and magazines\; shown in galleries and museums in Chile\, Europe\, Canada and the United States\; and are part of public and private art collections.\n\nShe is a visiting artist at the Washington Street Gallery in Ann Arbor. Adlerstein moved to Ann Arbor with her husband in 2001 and has two sons.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:Anthropogenic environmental changes directly affect animal and plant species worldwide and such changes will have a dramatic impact on human health. A remarkable example of this problem lies in the cost of mitigating weedy plant infestations in agricultural crops–an estimated $37B of the US economy is lost yearly due to crop damage and the cost of herbicide application (Pimental 2005). Despite the impact of weedy plants on the world’s food supply\, little is known about the evolutionary potential of traits that make a plant a weed\, and less is understood about the genetics of plant ”˜weediness.’ Dr. Baucom's research makes use of manipulative field experiments and publicly available data sets\, as well as the tools of quantitative genetics\, bioinformatics and molecular biology to assess how plants adapt to human-mediated selection and which plant species are likely to adapt. She focuses on weeds and domesticated species of the model genus Ipomoea (morning glories) to address a range of key evolutionary and ecological questions that will ultimately inform components of agricultural food production.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Eisenberg Institute for Historical Studies Thursday Speakers Series
DESCRIPTION:Jennifer Jenkins\, University of Toronto\n\nLecture Abstract: The economic and political relationships which linked Germany and Iran between 1873 and 1979 have been largely forgotten. This talk analyzes imperial German mappings of Iran as space of economic investment in the period between 1906 and the First World War\, placing them in dialogue with Iranian nationalist depictions of the country's development in the wake of the Persian Constitutional Revolution (1906-1911). The connections forged between German and Iranian nationalist politicians in this period played forward into the First World War. The book project\, from which this talk is a part\, attempts both to 'de-center' German history from the perspective of its Persian frontier\, and to place Iranian history into a global frame.\n\nPresented in conjunction with the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies.

SUMMARY:Performance:Lucy Wainwright Roche & Lindsay Fuller
DESCRIPTION:A folk scion and a death-haunted Southern songwriter\n\nThe daughter of Loudon Wainwright III and Suzzy Roche\, Lucy Wainwright Roche has been compared to Joni Mitchell and Patty Griffin by National Public Radio. She rebelled against the family business by teaching elementary school for several years before getting involved in music\, and when she did get started it was with a voice totally her own. Since 2007\, Lucy has released two EPs and a studio album entitled \"Lucy\" (2010)\, toured the U.S.\, Canada and Europe\, and has performed with The Indigo Girls\, Neko Case\, and Over the Rhine. Lucy is known for her crystal clear voice and straightforward\, funny stage presence. She appears tonight wiht Alabama-raised Lindsay Fuller\, who\, in her own words\, \" makes her peace with the Christ-haunted South by writing songs about the one thing that makes us all equal and honest\, death. However\, don't be misled\; the darkness in her songs is more about bringing things to light than bringing folks down.\" The title track of her latest recording\, \"You\, Anniversary\,\" is based on W.S Merwin's poem\, \"For The Anniversary of My Death\,\" in which the poet contemplates the fact that he passes the future day of his death each year unaware. Lindsay's song\, a duet with Amy Ray of the Indigo Girls\, weaves a beautiful portrait of someone awake to her own mortality yet frustrated with how death undermines what she's built.
