SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Biotronics – Biotechnology for Electronic and Photonic Applications
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Biotronics is the development and implementation of a new class of polymers that possess unique optical and electromagnetic properties that no other known polymer has. They have already demonstrated significant improvements in electronic and optoelectronic device performance. These non fossil fuel-based photonic and electronic Biopolymer materials\, derived from deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) biowaste and silk\, are abundant\, inexpensive and green materials that will not deplete our natural resources or harm the environment. They have the potential to compete with\, or maybe someday even replace\, fossil fuel-based plastics for applications ranging from eyeglasses to the higher technology applications light emitting diodes\, transistors and solar cells. Preliminary in-house research in this area started around 1999 and since then low optical losses of < 0.5dB/cm over a broad wavelength have been achieved\, electrical conductivities 3-10 orders of magnitude higher than other polymer materials have also been achieved and they are tunable. Their microwave losses are also lower than other polymers\, making them very attractive for high speed electro-optic devices. Used as cladding layers in nonlinear polymer-based electro optic modulators a significant reduction in the overall optical insertion loss of these devices has been achieved\, dropping from 15 dB to 10dB\, or a 3X improvement. The first all-DNA electro-optic modulator\, with significantly lower losses than current polymer EO modulators has also been demonstrated and has the potential for operating at significantly lower power. Using another DNA-based Biopolymer for an electron-blocking layer in an organic light emitting diode (OLED)\, the first red\, blue and green Bio-Organic LEDs were demonstrated that were as much as 30X brighter and operated at 10X higher efficiency and 3X longer lifetimes compared with OLED’s without the Biopolymer electron-blocking layer. Using a DNA-based Biopolymer for the gate dielectric layer in an organic field effect transistor (OFET)\, the first Bio-Organic FET was demonstrated that operated at nearly an order of magnitude lower gate voltage compared with OFETs using the commonly used dielectric polymers for the gate dielectric. Using Biopolymers as host materials\, a significant increase the photoluminescence of fluorescent materials by as much as 100 times has been achieved\, when compared with other commonly used polymer hosts. This suggests significantly increased device efficiencies\, higher outputs\, lower operating powers and longer lifetimes. The first organic thin film transistor (OTFT) using a conductive polymer doped Biopolymer for the semiconductor region (Bio-Organic TFT) has been demonstrated with a competitive carrier mobility of other organic semiconductor devices but at 10X lower cost. This new Biotronics technology shows great promise for a number of both photonic and electronic applications\, with demonstrated increase in device performance. This opens up a whole new field for bioengineering\, in addition to the current genomic sequencing and clinical diagnosis and treatment applications. Where silicon is today’s fundamental building block for inorganic electronics and photonics\, Biopolymers hold promise to become tomorrow’s fundamental building block for organic photonics and electronics.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:African Art and the Shape of Time
DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. Additional support provided by the CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. McCrindle Foundation\, the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and Office of the Vice President for Research\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, and THE MOSAIC FOUNDATION (of R. & P. Heydon).\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Discovering Eighteenth-Century British America through the William L. Clements Library Collection
DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Jesper Just: \"This Nameless Spectacle\"
DESCRIPTION:Visitors encountering Danish artist Just’s exhibit will find themselves captivated in stages\, as the experience of viewing it unfolds over time. In this breathtaking installation\, as in much of his work\, Just situates the viewer in his signature landscape of beauty\, provocation\, and a general uneasiness that is as seductive as it is ominous. The storyline is at once deceptively simple and perplexing: a wheelchair-bound protagonist travels through a neighborhood in the outskirts of Paris to her apartment\, while a young male character appears to follow her. Once home\, she is able to leave her wheelchair but is overcome by a powerful seizure. One of Just’s unique strengths is his ability to engage the viewer in an open-ended\, unresolved narrative in a manner that is more intriguing than frustrating. It is impossible to parse but equally impossible to abandon\, and this is the essence of Just’s gift for hypnotic storytelling.\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost. \n

This exhibition will present a newly commissioned piece by UMMA\, which will be added to the artists' website\, yhchang.com.\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, and the Nam Center for Korean Studies. Additional support provided by the Dr. Robert and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:The Father-Son Relationship: Chip Off the Old Block or Not
DESCRIPTION:At this point in life\, we often review the past. What has shaped our character and destiny? The role of fathers is often significant. What are the building blocks in childhood? How did we deal with the non-encouraging father\, or one who loudly always has the last word? Mort Chethik\, Emeritus Professor in Psychiatry at the University of Michigan\, will illustrate with some cases highlighting these issues. The purpose of the course is to gain perspective on this relationship\, as well as our own role as fathers with our sons.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Environmental Awareness in Taiwanese Performing Arts
DESCRIPTION:This talk will explore the relationship between human beings and the natural world as reflected in artistic works that reference Taiwan's Tamsui River æ·¡æ°´æ²³. This river\, which flows about 6 miles from Taipei to the northern port city of Tamsui\, has captured the imagination of creative artists for decades. Paintings\, songs\, and other creative works from the first half of the twentieth century cast the river in idyllic settings. These images stand in stark contrast to the Tamsui as it has existed since the mid twentieth century. As Taiwan's \"economic miracle\" took precedence over environmental concerns\, the Tamsui turned into a toxic\, open sewer. The river's serious pollution became the subject of films\, theatrical pieces\, and numerous popular songs beginning in the early 1980s. Guy draws on the theories and concerns of literary ecocriticism in referencing representative works.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Orren C. Mohler Prize Lecture
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Astronomy Department will present the 2012/2013 Mohler Prize to Andrew Fabian of the Institute of Astronomy on Friday\, November 30 at 7 PM in 1201 Chemistry Bldg. Dr. Fabian will then present a public lecture:\n\n\"Feedback from Active Black Holes: How a central black hole can control a galaxy\"\n\nAll large galaxies appear to have a central black hole with a mass about 0.1% that of the host galaxy. Evidence is growing that the black hole may be the prime mover here\, despite the radius of the galaxy being a billion times larger than the radius of the black hole. The key point is the enormous quantity of energy produced by matter accreting onto the black hole. At times this makes the galaxy nucleus active and cause energy to be fed back into the galaxy to push and heat its gas clouds. How these processes operate and how the energy interacts with the gas will be discussed and illustrated with images from the radio through X-ray wavebands.\n\nDr. Andrew Fabian is a Royal Society Research Professor at the Institute of Astronomy\, Cambridge. He has served as President of the Royal Astronomical Society and is Vice Master of Darwin College\, Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society\, has been awarded an Order of the British Empire\, won the Rossi Prize in 2001\, and the Dannie Heineman Prize in 2008. His research interests include black holes\, clusters of galaxies\, and X-ray astronomy.\n\nOrren C Mohler was chairman of the Department of Astronomy and director of the observatories from 1962 - 1970. The Mohler Prize was established in 1986\, to recognize outstanding research in astronomy and astrophysics. Several past Mohler prize winners have gone on to receive Nobel or Crafoord prizes.\n\nMembers of the public are invited to Angell Hall following the lecture for an SAS open house
