Thomas received his MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art in 2002, and his intricate designs are influenced by historical furniture, industrial plate ware, and classic Arts & Crafts and folk art iconography. Sarah is largely self-taught as a potter and spent a year living in Japan, visiting studio potters throughout the country. She throws all of the pottery on the wheel, finishing and assembling each piece when partially dry. A palette of luminous glazes highlight the hand-carved designs and crisp lines, giving each piece a polished, radiant finish. \r\n\r\n1500 E. In past centuries, nomadic pasture lands cut through and across state borders. Echoing this heritage, contemporary Kazakhs describe and justify a variety of practices, from crossing borders to obtaining illegal passports, in terms of a shared \u201d\u02dcKazakh\u2019 cultural history of movement. The stories people evoke and tell about the connection and \u201cKazakhness\u201d\u009d (Kazakhshylykh) evidence the simultaneous idealization of both ancestral rootedness and mobility as fundamental to a sense of \u201cbelonging\u201d\u009d to the land. Thus, Genina argues for the viability of alternative worldviews in which the nation-state, with its attending conceptions of history, territoriality, and membership, has become but one aspect of people\u2019s broader experiences of creating compelling and meaningful ways of life.\r\n\r\nAnna Genina is a doctoral candidate in cultural anthropology at the University of Michigan. She has been researching issues of Kazakh diaspora and the migration of Kazakhs from Mongolia to Kazakhstan, and has conducted ethnographic fieldwork with Mongolian Kazakh repatriates in the Almaty region of Kazakhstan and in the Bayan Ulgii Kazakh Autonomous District in Western Mongolia (2006-09). Michele Gornick, PhD, will present a talk entitled, \"The Incidentalome: Unanticipated ethical challenges uncovered in our genomes.\" Please also share with interested students, faculty, and staff.\r\n\r\nSummary: Recent advances in sequencing technology have enabled the systematic analysis of whole genomes, providing greater insight into the genetic basis of human disease. Using such technologies, including whole genome sequencing (WGS) and whole exome sequencing (WES), increases the possibility of encountering variants known to cause disease, suspected to cause disease, or those that are outside the original intent of testing. The latter are often referred to as incidental findings (IFs). While the discovery of IFs is a component of WGS\/WES, the way in which the data is generated from genomic sequencing creates new ethical challenges associated with IFs that have direct clinical implications for patient health and personal utility.\r\n\r\nDr. Gornick received her PhD in Human Genetics at the University of Michigan, as well as a Masters in Statistics.
