SUMMARY:Exhibition:Photography Exhibit: Through its Children's Eyes: A Look at Battambang\, Cambodia
DESCRIPTION:For a poor child in rural Cambodia\, education is a luxury and art is an impossible dream. In the little village of Norea\, Tao Li worked with the Face-to-Face AIDS Project to establish a basic education center for impoverished children affected by HIV/AIDS. \n\nThis exhibition is the expression of the children's love for life\, beauty\, and art. They hope to share their unique perspectives and offer a small but genuine glimpse of their home.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:The Shah of Iran and Understanding the Troubled History of U.S.-Iranian Relations
DESCRIPTION:The political and cultural clashes between secularism and religious fundamentalism in Iran can be traced to the life of the late Shah and his father\, Reza Khan. The Shah at age 22 was installed as ruler in 1941\, and ruled for 38 years until his overthrow in 1979 by Ayatollah Khomeini. Iran's present clerical regime defines itself in terms of its opposition to the United States\, invoking the Qor'an to brand America as the \"Great Satan.\" After the stolen Iranian 2009 presidential election and economic sanctions by the West\, the clerical regime now faces the most serious challenge to its rule.\n\nSpeaker: Al Gourdji\, C.P.A.\, M.B.A.\, City College of New York\, who lived the first 19 years of his life in Iran. Prior to retirement he was a corporate officer of Dow Corning Corporation in charge of its global tax activities.\n\nThis is the fourth of 9 lectures in OLLI's monthly 2nd Tuesday Distinguished Lecture Series. OLLI activities are open to anyone age 50 or older.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:African Art and the Shape of Time
DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. Additional support provided by the CEW Frances and Sydney Lewis Visiting Leaders Fund.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. McCrindle Foundation\, the University of Michigan Health System\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and Office of the Vice President for Research\, the Richard and Rosann Noel Endowment Fund\, and THE MOSAIC FOUNDATION (of R. & P. Heydon).\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Discovering Eighteenth-Century British America through the William L. Clements Library Collection
DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:YOUNG-HAE CHANG HEAVY INDUSTRIES
DESCRIPTION:The Seoul-based art collaborative\, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries (YHCHI) is known for innovative video works that exist at the nexus of visual art and digital literature. Blurring the boundaries between media\, technologies\, and cultural histories\, YHCHI has gained international acclaim for their \"net art\" productions-mostly black- and-white videos of quickly flashing capitalized text in a generic font with synchronized music. This exhibition will present a newly commissioned piece by UMMA\, which will be added to the artists' website\, yhchang.com.\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment\, the University of Michigan Office of the Provost\, and the Nam Center for Korean Studies. Additional support provided by the Dr. Robert and Janet Miller Fund.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CES End of Semester Luncheon. \"Taking Stock of Europe's Crises: Politics\, Debt\, Recession\, and the Euro”
DESCRIPTION:Moderator: Joshua Cole\, CES director and associate professor of history. Presenters: Jim Adams\, professor of economics\, Dario Gaggio\, associate professor of history\; Anna Grzymala-Busse\, professor of political science\; and Daniel Halberstam\, professor of law. U-M. Co-sponsor: WCED. Part of \"The European Economic Crisis and its Political Dimensions.\" Free and open to the public.\n\nThere has been\, of course\, no single \"European Crisis\" in the past several years. The banking crisis that spread from the United States to Europe in 2008\, and the sovereign debt crises that spread from Greece to Portugal and Italy in 2009\, are different from the punctured real estate bubbles and bank bailouts that tripped up the Spanish and Irish economies during the same year. Together\, however\, these concurrent crises have revealed how fragile the idea of a united Europe is in the present\, both as a monetary union and as a political ideal. Many have asserted that the answer to the current problems faced by the Eurozone is \"more Europe\" even as new fissures have opened up between the North and the South\, making it difficult to imagine what kinds of policies or institutions might make \"more Europe\" possible. \n\nA distinguished panel of experts from the University of Michigan's faculty will discuss the on-going crises in Europe from the perspective of their respective disciplines. What do economists agree on\, and where do they disagree in their analysis of the current situation? How has the present crisis changed the story that historians\, political scientists and specialists in European constitutional law tell about the story of European integration in the second half of the twentieth century?

SUMMARY:Class / Instruction:The Love\, Lure and Lore of the Clothesline
DESCRIPTION:What does a clothesline hobbyist collect\, and why? This fun presentation and display of laundry nostalgia will revive memories of simpler times when laundry was always hung to dry outdoors – when folks went “online” without the Internet. We’ll touch on washday history and sociological issues of ethnic stereotypes\, feminism\, and the demise of the clothesline as automatic dryers emerged. We’ll learn why “solar drying” is the way to go. There will be a “show-and-tell\,” laundry poetry\, personal stories\, and lots of sharing. Let’s “hang out” together! SUMMARY:Film Screening:Cultures of Resistance
DESCRIPTION:Does each gesture really make a difference? Can music and dance be weapons of peace? In 2003\, on the eve of the Iraq war\, director Iara Lee embarked on a journey to better understand a world increasingly embroiled in conflict and\, as she saw it\, heading for self-destruction. After several years\, traveling over five continents\, Iara encountered growing numbers of people who committed their lives to promoting change. This is their story. From Iran\, where graffiti and rap became tools in fighting government repression\, to Burma\, where monks acting in the tradition of Gandhi take on a dictatorship\, moving on to Brazil\, where musicians reach out to slum kids and transform guns into guitars\, and ending in Palestinian refugee camps in Lebanon\, where photography\, music\, and film have given a voice to those rarely heard\, Cultures Of Resistance explores how art and creativity can be ammunition in the battle for peace and justice.\n\nFeaturing: Medellín poets for peace\, Capoeira masters from Brazil\, Niger Delta militants\, Iranian graffiti artists\, women’s movement leaders in Rwanda\, Lebanon’s refugee filmmakers\, US political pranksters\, indigenous Kayapó activists from the Xingu River\, Israeli dissidents\, hip-hop artists from Palestine\, and many more. For more information about the film\, visit http://films.culturesofresistance.org/.\n\n(2011\, 73 min.)\n\nCultures of Resistance is being presented as part of the film series Examining Heroes and Icons\, which UMMA is offering in conjunction with the exhibition Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire (on view September 22\, 2012 until January 13\, 2013)\, focusing on the idea of heroes and exploring ways in which heroes are defined through images.\n\nThis film series is curated by the UMMA Student Programming and Advisory Council and cosponsored by MFlicks and the University Musical Society (UMS).\n\nGenerous support for the exhibition Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:Seasonal lore of the Great Lakes\n\nLee Murdock has uncovered a boundless body of music and stories of the Great Lakes\, songs made of hard work and hard living\, of ships that come in and ships that have gone down. Tonight\, Lee arrives in port with his Christmas Ship Concert\, a holiday show commemorating the turn-of-the-century tradition of carrying Christmas trees to Great Lakes port cities. At the end of the lumber season every year\, Great Lakes captains would carry one final cargo\, heralding the holiday season with a deck piled high with fresh-cut evergreen trees and garlands. It's a one-of-a-kind seasonal celebration\, and a great way to see the man Dirty Linen called \"the premier interpreter of songs and tales about the Great Lakes.\" Lee comes to town with a new all-instrumental holiday album\, \"A Wordless Christmas.\"
