As a result, a majority of the scholarship surrounding the crusades has set the narratives of Western Europe in opposition to those of the \u201ceast,\u201d\u009d contributing to the understanding of this period as solely antagonistic. In an attempt to break away from and argue against compartmentalized readings of crusading texts, my talk will begin with an assessment and evaluation of crusading scholarship, as well as a commentary on the classification of literary and historiographic narratives as \u201ccrusading\u201d\u009d texts. By providing a brief survey and analysis of Armenian sources, the second section will then move to a discussion of the contribution of the Armenians to the to the study of the crusading period.
