DESCRIPTION:For a poor child in rural Cambodia\, education is a luxury and art is an impossible dream.  In the little village of Norea\, Tao Li worked with the Face-to-Face AIDS Project to establish a basic education center for impoverished children affected by HIV/AIDS. \n\nThis exhibition is the expression of the children's love for life\, beauty\, and art.  They hope to share their unique perspectives and offer a small but genuine glimpse of their home.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:African Art and the Shape of Time
DESCRIPTION:African Art and the Shape of Time explores how African art gives material form to diverse concepts of temporality\, history and memory. African art is often interpreted in Western analytical frameworks as expressions of timeless myths and rituals\, interrupted only by the colonial encounter. African Art and the Shape of Time complicates such conventional views by considering diverse modes for reckoning time and its philosophical\, social\, and religious significance. The exhibition includes 30 works from the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, National Museum of African Art\, Fowler Museum at UCLA\, as well as several Detroit area private collections\, and is organized around five themes that explore the multiplicity of time in Africa: The Beginning of Things\, Embodied Time\, Moving Through Time\, Global Time\, and \"NOW.\"\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the University of Michigan Health System. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire 
DESCRIPTION:Benjamin West's iconic painting The Death of General Wolfe (1776) depicts the death of James Wolfe\, the British commander at the 1759 Battle of Quebec during what in this country is known as the French and Indian War. In conflating a momentous contemporary event with the genre of large-scale history painting\, West flouted the conventions of academic painting and the work became one of the most celebrated paintings in Britain. The artist went on to produce six versions of the painting\, one of which belongs to the William L. Clements Library at the University of Michigan. Through approximately 40 works from Michigan\, Canadian\, and British collections\, this ambitious and thematically focused exhibition will include the Clements canvas as well as other depictions of James Wolfe and his death on the battlefield.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Joseph F. DESCRIPTION:This significant exhibition provides glimpses of British America in the 1700s and is designed to complement the Museum's concurrent exhibition \"Benjamin West: General Wolfe and the Art of Empire\,\" which features the Clements collection's major painting \"The Death of General Wolfe.\" William L. Clements assembled an outstanding array of primary sources on North America dating between 1492 and 1800\, with a heavy emphasis on early European exploration and discovery and the eighteenth-century wars for control of the continent. The exhibition features a mix of rare items from Mr. Clements’s original donation and pieces the Library has acquired since 1923 to complement and enhance its strength in eighteenth-century American history.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the Andrew W. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Francis Alys: Guards
DESCRIPTION:Belgian artist Francis Alys's video Guards (2005) documents sixty-four of the Queen of England's guards on a \"walk\" throughout the City of London. There is perhaps no more symbolically unemotional character than that of a bearskin-hat-wearing guard of the Queen of England. Yet even with no break in the guards' indifferent exterior\, the tale still manages to be a powerful metaphor for the human condition. Many of the elements of Guards are found throughout Alys's work: walking\, rhythm\, the use of the street and bridges are all common tropes in his oeuvre. These strategies\, evoking the poetic and sonic palette of the urban environment\, involve a sometimes loose and other times overt relationship to social resistance and to the symbolic and often political implications of these actions.\n\nGenerous support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost.\n

DESCRIPTION:The Seoul-based art collaborative\, Young-Hae Chang Heavy Industries (YHCHI) is known for innovative video works that exist at the nexus of visual art and digital literature. Blurring the boundaries between media\, technologies\, and cultural histories\, YHCHI has gained international acclaim for their \"net art\" productions-mostly black- and-white videos of quickly flashing capitalized text in a generic font with synchronized music. This exhibition will present a newly commissioned piece by UMMA\, which will be added to the artists' website\, yhchang.com.\n\nThis exhibition is generously supported by the Herbert W. and Susan L. DESCRIPTION:Christmas the cowboy way!\n\nWith more than 30 years of great entertainment \"the cowboy way\" under their belts\, Riders In The Sky roll on with their mix of Western song classics and zany cowpoke send-ups. This holiday season they're on tour with what we're sure will be a one-of-a-kind program of cowboy Christmas music. What sometimes gets overlooked amid the hilarity is that Ranger Doug (Idol of American Youth)\, Woody Paul (King of the Cowboy Fiddlers)\, Joey (the Cowpolka King)\, and Too Slim (Licensed Driver) are matchless musicians\, with a huge and growing stock of old and new songs to draw on as they deepen a great American tradition. And can Toby Keith do rope tricks on stage? Ranger Doug was an Ann Arborite once upon a time\, and the group's Ark shows have been uniformly terrific. The opener? Say no more\, it's Freddy LaBour! Alter-ego of \"Too Slim\,\" \"Say No More It's Freddy LaBour\" is a one-man\, guitar-playing\, wise-cracking\, wacky original song-singing folk superstar best known for his hit \"Who Offed Hoffa?\" which topped the charts of the University of Michigan's student cafeteria in 1971. \n\nAlso known as the person responsible for propagating the rumor that Paul McCartney was dead (true story) \"Say No More\" delights the unsuspecting audience with songs ranging from the trucker's lament \"My Load Shifted\,\" to his feel-good singalong \"The Prozac Polka (La-La Song).\" He specializes in impressions of people you probably don't recognize\, plus zany late-night commercials (for products like \"Garth Does Darth\, the # 1 country superstar of the Nineties performs the works of the Lord of the Dark Side\, and\, if you act now\, you also get Darth Does Garth....\")\, hilarious turns of poetry\, and whatever else his fevered imagination can come up with. \n\nBut how does this veteran of over 6300 Riders In The Sky shows\, creator/writer of hundreds of public radio shows and TV specials\, and a darn good yard man\, see himself? \"I'm the pickle\,\" he says. \"You know\, you go into a fine deli and order a sandwich\, and you didn't go there for the pickle. You didn't ask for the pickle. You never even think about the pickle. And yet\, when your sandwich comes\, there it is\, the pickle. And you like it\, and it adds something to the meal. That's me. I give the audience the pickle.\"
