As Detroit moves through the 21st century, what role will the African Americans play in Detroit's development in the community? How will this population define itself in the new century while dealing with various issues that impacts growth, development and cultural enrichment in the city? The exhibition Black Detroit 21 addresses social concerns within Detroit's African American community by exploring the topics of identity, territory, protest, sexuality and transition. The 11 artists in this show are from a multitude of social, personal and generational backgrounds, finding a common theme in their work, which documents and\/or is influenced by Detroit's African American community. The installation of the artists work in Black Detroit 21 presents a visual context to create a dialogue around these topics.\r\n\r\nBlack Detroit 21 is curated by Odie Rynell Cash, an internationally active independent curator, arts program organizer and artist living between Detroit, Michigan and Antwerp, Belgium. Cash is recognized for his wide range of artistic practices and concerns; with the significance of avant-garde ideas and experimental mediums\/media that address contemporary social and urban society.\r\n\r\nHe studied a Liberal Education curriculum at Columbia College Chicago. He has an extensive and varied background, having curated and exhibited artworks in more than nine countries, including projects in Antwerp, Manila, Rotterdam, Paris and Toronto. Cash was the recipient of a 2007 Flemish Minister of Culture Travel Grant for research on performance theory. This talk looks at those aspects of Chaplins acting style that fascinated Soviet left-wing artists and what they made of them: Chaplin's image in Russia as a \"Taylorist actor;\" Chaplin's impact on Kuleshov's workshop; and, more closely, a strange reference in both Mayakovsky's poem and Stepanova's to a \"Chaplin\" film which the real Chaplin never made, Man on a Propeller. This was not, as it would seem, a fictional film by a fictionalized Charlie, but (as it turns out) a real film by a different comic actor shown in Russia in 1922 and taken for real by Mayakovsky and Stepanova. What was this film and why was it interesting to the revolutionary artists of the 1920s? The paper approaches this episode not as a mere filmographic conundrum or a cultural curio; instead it looks at this pseudo-Chaplin movie through the lens of artistic programs declared by the LEF and Constructivist groups, tracing the way the cult of Chaplin converged, in Russian, with the cult of flying, the cult of propellers, and the worship of Wells' Time Machine in the work by El Lissitsky and Nikolai Aseev.\r\n\r\nYuri Tsivian studied film history in Riga and Moscow, combining it with studying semiotics under the guidance of Yuri Lotman (1922-93), a prominent cultural scholar of Tartu University in collaboration with whom Yuri has written a book on film language Dialogues with the Screen (Tallinn, 1994). The author of over one hundred publications in sixteen languages, Tsivian is credited with launching two new fields in the studies of film and culture: carpalistics and cinemetrics. This lecture analyzes non-governmental attempts, and in particular the intervention of the female German Protestant missionaries, the Kaiserswerth Deaconesses, at transferring orphans out of conflict zones and placing them into orphanages in Beirut and Smyrna. In the course of the lecture, Professor Tanielian will not only explore the various reactions of local, state and community officials, the experience of the children, the practical difficulties that circumscribed the efforts, but also link these non-governmental humanitarian efforts to larger debates of humanitarian narratives and practices in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. \r\n\r\nMelanie Tanielian received her PhD in history from the University of \r\nCalifornia, Berkeley. Her dissertation, \"The War of Famine: Everyday Life in Wartime Beirut and Mount Lebanon (1914-1918)\", is a socio-economic study of daily life at the Lebanese homefront during the First World War, seen through the lens of famine, family, disease and medicine, as well as local, state, and international humanitarian relief. \u00a0Her research and teaching interests include the social and cultural history of WWI in the Middle East, the emergence of religious philanthropic societies and their work in times of conflict, the history of German missionaries, social Protestantism and modern humanitarianism, disease, medicine, and hospitals, the history Childhood and Youth. Her research has been supported by the Allan Sharlin Memorial Grant for Dissertation Research, the DAAD Graduate Fellowship, and the Sultan Fellowship from the Center of Middle Eastern Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. By marketing the past, however, these cities also transform it, adding new layers to the historical landscape in the very process of excavating it.
