As Detroit moves through the 21st century, what role will the African Americans play in Detroit's development in the community? How will this population define itself in the new century while dealing with various issues that impacts growth, development and cultural enrichment in the city? The exhibition Black Detroit 21 addresses social concerns within Detroit's African American community by exploring the topics of identity, territory, protest, sexuality and transition. The 11 artists in this show are from a multitude of social, personal and generational backgrounds, finding a common theme in their work, which documents and\/or is influenced by Detroit's African American community. The installation of the artists work in Black Detroit 21 presents a visual context to create a dialogue around these topics.\r\n\r\nBlack Detroit 21 is curated by Odie Rynell Cash, an internationally active independent curator, arts program organizer and artist living between Detroit, Michigan and Antwerp, Belgium. Cash is recognized for his wide range of artistic practices and concerns; with the significance of avant-garde ideas and experimental mediums\/media that address contemporary social and urban society.\r\n\r\nHe studied a Liberal Education curriculum at Columbia College Chicago. He has an extensive and varied background, having curated and exhibited artworks in more than nine countries, including projects in Antwerp, Manila, Rotterdam, Paris and Toronto. Cash was the recipient of a 2007 Flemish Minister of Culture Travel Grant for research on performance theory. Socialist leaders decried sport as an opiate of the masses. Baron de Coubertin, founder of the modern games, sought to exclude workers and women from his grand festivals. When the Bolsheviks came to power, they wanted nothing to do with the Olympics and the Olympics wanted nothing to do with them. Yet, after the Second World War the USSR took part in international sport and came to dominate Olympic competition. By 1974, Moscow had been awarded the 1980 Games, indicating Communism\u2019s complete embrace of an ideology and set of practices it had once abhorred. This talk will examine how and why this strange embrace came about and how it influenced international politics during the Cold War.\r\n\r\nRobert Edelman is a professor of Russian history and the history of sport at the University of California, San Diego, where he has been teaching since 1972, when he received his doctorate from Columbia University. He has also taught at UCLA. He was a former sports-writer and radio announcer. He has consulted on documentaries for HBO, PBS, ESPN, and CBS at the 1998 Olympic Winter Games. He lives in Solana Beach with three children, two dogs, and one wife. His reputation usually invokes the charged rhetoric of collaboration, but his \u201cconversion\u201d\u009d from Korean nationality to Japanese is the larger conundrum Chang\/Noguchi\u2019s life presents anyone who wishes to understand the imbricated histories of modern Japan and Korea. This talk will take as its focus Chang\u2019s 1975 autobiographical novel Arashi no uta (Poem in a Storm) in order to understand his own account of how he came to naturalize from Korean subject to Japanese citizen, and refashion his life for what was his ultimate work of art: the person known as Noguchi Minoru, crafted by desire and necessity over the span of the twentieth century.\r\n\r\nJohn Whittier Treat is professor in the Department of East Asian Languages and Literatures at Yale University, where he teaches modern Japanese and Korean fiction and chairs LGBT Studies. He is the author of Writing Ground Zero: Japanese Literature and the Atomic Bomb (Chicago, 1995) and Great Mirrors Shattered: Japan, Orientalism and Homosexuality (Oxford, 1999). His essay \u201cChoosing to Collaborate: Yi Kwang-su and the Moral Subject in Colonial Korea\u201d\u009d appeared in the Journal of Asian Studies in 2011, as did his \u201cFrom Lisbon to Sendai, New Haven to Fukushima: Thoughts on 3\/11\u201d\u009d in The Yale Review.
