Seeing origami as a metaphor for hope, she is inspired by nature \u2013 from the bustle of farmers markets, to cranes circling a snowy corn field, to children skipping in the rain. Linda Stephen's origami art landscapes are part of public and private collections across the U.S. and Japan, from the JW Marriott Grand Rapids\u2019 Sister City Collection to the City Hall in Omihachiman, Japan. This final discussion will focus on the exhibition theme in relation to art and the Detroit community. A brief question and answer period with the audience will follow the discussion.\r\n8:30 p.m. - Satori Circus - Performance\r\n\"Oh Happy Day Trilogy\" (part one)\r\nAccording to the artists, the goal of this performance is to \u201cmake us think...review ourselves...soul searching\/identity - its loss and in search of it...and what is gained in doing so...entertainment\/education\/observation\/simulation\/and the hybrid that comes out of those. Thereby, the audience walks away questioning...the artist, themselves, the world we've woven around us.\u201d\u009d\r\nWith a Black population of more than 80-percent, Detroit's African American community plays a significant role in this city's cultural identity and economic future. As Detroit moves through the 21st century, what role will the African Americans play in Detroit's development in the community? How will this population define itself in the new century while dealing with various issues that impacts growth, development and cultural enrichment in the city? The exhibition Black Detroit 21 addresses social concerns within Detroit's African American community by exploring the topics of identity, territory, protest, sexuality and transition. The 11 artists in this show are from a multitude of social, personal and generational backgrounds, finding a common theme in their work, which documents and\/or is influenced by Detroit's African American community. The installation of the artists work in Black Detroit 21 presents a visual context to create a dialogue around these topics.\r\n\r\nBlack Detroit 21 is curated by Odie Rynell Cash, an internationally active independent curator, arts program organizer and artist living between Detroit, Michigan and Antwerp, Belgium. Cash is recognized for his wide range of artistic practices and concerns; with the significance of avant-garde ideas and experimental mediums\/media that address contemporary social and urban society.\r\n\r\nHe studied a Liberal Education curriculum at Columbia College Chicago. He has an extensive and varied background, having curated and exhibited artworks in more than nine countries, including projects in Antwerp, Manila, Rotterdam, Paris and Toronto. Cash was the recipient of a 2007 Flemish Minister of Culture Travel Grant for research on performance theory. Yet the literatures hold on to an individual, sometimes even self-centric, view of moral agency which we believe unnecessarily delimits and limits the possibilities of becoming, especially for eco-minded entrepreneurs. We draw on eco-feminist views, especially the ethic of flourishing, to suggest that entrepreneurs develop as moral agents in relation to their social and ecological communities. We analyze a single longitudinal case study using multi-sensorial and multi-vocal methods to reveal a deeply relational view of moral agency, in its making. A four-year, eleven collections, multiple awards journey shows us how an entrepreneur can adjust both the multiplicity and the modality of her actions to more closely and meaningfully (re)connect social and ecological communities. Our dual-process model of agency draws entrepreneurship and eco-feminist theories closer together. Greer, Associate Professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and Senior Research Fellow at LSE Health, London School of Economics\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nMedicaid, the largest federal grant program to the states, insures over 65 million low-income people. Through the growing use of waivers and changes in federal law, the period from 1992 through 2009 featured substantial devolution to the states greatly enhancing their opportunities to innovate and tailor their Medicaid programs. The passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act in 2010 (ACA) brought this devolutionary period to a halt. The sweeping Medicaid coverage expansions mandated by the ACA unleashed a period of fractious federalism anchored in intense partisan polarization. While the Supreme Court decision of 2012 defused intergovernmental tensions by making the Medicaid coverage expansion a state option, the degree to which states would implement the expansion remained unclear. Given this backdrop, this lecture examines the challenges Medicaid faces in the second term of the Obama administration.\r\n\r\nAbout the presenters:\r\n\r\nFrank J. Thompson (Ph.D., University of California, Berkeley) is Professor of Public Affairs and Administration at Rutgers-Newark and at the Rutgers Center for State Health Policy in New Brunswick. Professor Thompson has served as a fellow with the U.S. Public Health Service and published extensively on issues of health policy and implementation. With support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Investigator Award Program, he has recently completed a book about Medicaid, federalism, and health reform during the Clinton, G.W. Bush, and Obama administrations. His recent publications focus on Medicaid and the safety net, the catalytic role of demonstration waivers in reshaping Medicaid, the transformation of Medicaid long-term care through the waiver process, and the implementation challenges for Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act of 2010. Prior to joining the faculty at Rutgers, Professor Thompson served as Dean of the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy at the State University of New York at Albany. Thompson received his undergraduate degree in political science from the University of Chicago and his M.A. and Ph.D. in that subject from the University of California, Berkeley. He is a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and was Executive Director of the National Commission on State and Local Public Service.\r\n\r\nScott L. Greer, is Associate Professor of Health Management and Policy at the University of Michigan School of Public Health, and Senior Research Fellow at LSE Health, London School of Economics. Sumathy has written and directed numerous plays, and in addition to performing throughout Sri Lanka, she has performed widely in international locations including New York, London, Philadelphia, and Melbourne. She works with local Sri Lankan groups in training non-actors, mostly women and working people. She has written numerous scripts for activist projects, and has co-scripted a path-breaking documentary feature on the ethnic conflict, In Search of a Road, which premiered at the Singapore International Film Festival. Her first short film Piralayam (Upheaval) was preselected at the Annual Film Without Frontiers of Barcelona in 2005, and she was awarded the Gratiaen Prize for English Literature for Thin Veils in 2001. A member of the drama panel of the Arts Council of Sri Lanka, she also belongs to its performing arts society. Her first feature film, Here and Now (in progress), has received an honorable mention grant from the US-based Global Film Initiative. Most recently, Sumathy Sivamohan won the prestigious Premchand Fellowship (2011) from the National Academy of Letters in India. \r\n\r\nYaliniDream conjures spirit through her unique blend of poetry, theater, song, and dance\u2013 reshaping reality and seeking peace through justice in the lands of earth, psyche, soul, and dream. One of the South Asian diaspora\u2019s most prominent performance poets, YaliniDream has toured nationally at hundreds of spaces throughout the US, as well as Europe and South Asia.
