Operation AB - Katyn: The Destruction of the Polish Elite at the Beginning of World War II, is divided into several thematic blocks. The first depicts the Soviet-German political and military alliance in the years 1939-1941. The next sections present the two notorious criminal operations of 1940, first the Katyn Massacre, and then the AB Operation. The exhibit also presents profiles of several victims, including families that fell victim to both aggressors. Finally, the exhibit looks at the big picture of these operations, depicting their geographical range and documenting the lack of punishment for the vast majority of the Third Reich and the USSR officers responsible for these crimes.

Sponsored by The Institute of National Remembrance, Poland
The University of Michigan, Department of Slavic Languages and Literatures
The Polski Klub and Polish Cultural Fund - Ann Arbor
The Qinghai Province is China’s most ethnically diverse and the least-populated of all Chinese provinces. The area is similar to Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah, except that 19,000 - foot mountain peaks, high plains, sheep herders, wild yaks, camels, temples, monks, and small farms sparsely spread in the region. Currently the Kunlun National Park is being developed in partnership with Yellowstone National Park in an effort to preserve the natural wonders and the wildlife of the Kunlun Mountains. There will be 100 plus captivating photographs showcasing the mystery and beauty of mountain life and environments of the Kunlun National Park. Kunlun Wild Life photography exhibition will be held at two different locations: 10/12-10/31 at the Art Lounge at the Michigan Union and 10/21 – 11/9 at Atrium 4 at Palmer Commons.
Rising young South African artist Mary Sibande constructs elaborate visual narratives to consider race, gender, and class in post-colonial South Africa. Rooted in her own family’s history of three generations of women as domestic servants, Sibande’s larger-than-life figures clothed in yards of fabric confront the viewer with the stark limits of cultural heritage as well as the possibility of transformation. Sibande’s Ann Arbor fellowship includes an original installation at the U-M Institute for the Humanities gallery, a Penny Stamps lecture, an open studio at the Stamps School on North Campus, and exhibition of Sibande’s existing work at Gallery DAAS, the U-M Museum of Art, and the Stamps School Slusser Gallery.
Reception: Friday, October 11 @ 7:00pm in North Quad Space 2435
Exhibition: October 1-18, 9am - 6pm

The exhibition foregrounds the Strait of Gibraltar both as a geographical unit that separates and links lands on either side, as well as a space in its own right with programs such as fishing, swimming, travelling, shipping, and conquering. Greetings from Gibraltar draws on the geographic as a design paradigm, a condition in which designers are being compelled to address and transform larger contexts and address issues, which had previously been confined to the domains of engineering, ecology, or regional planning.

The need to address such ”˜geographic’ aspects has prompted designers to re-examine tools of representation as well forms of the architectural object.

The work was developed in the context of a 2013 University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning Travel Studio to the Strait of Gibraltar. Over the four weeks of June 2013, the studio travelled from Madrid through Granada, Seville, Cadiz, Gibraltar/La Linea, Algeciras, Ceuta, Tangier, and Fez. The studio was initiated in analytic and cartographic investigations of individual port-cities case studies, subsequently complied to highlight relational geographies, flows, add exchanges across the Strait. The travel journey began with a passion for sensory and aesthetic knowledge anchored by seascapes.

The resultant is a landscape that depicts space and time. The postcard-joiners construct a map of the Strait together with the series of architectural interventions proposed in that geography. It
also creates a narrative, as if the viewer moved through the space, encountering a series of detail views as well as constructing a panorama and a map of the landscape.

Gibraltar Studio 2013
Professors: Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy
Students: John Arnold, Peter Dumbadze, Lyla Feinsod, Phillip Gavrilovski, Monica Griffin, Andrew Ko, Yuan Liang, Yunzhi Ou, Jason Park, Austin Tsai, Adam Wagner, Suo Ya

Special thanks to Andrew Ko for coordinating the exhibition.

Acknowledgments: Monica Ponce De Leon, Dean Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning

A note about the travel studio to Gibraltar:
The studio investigates the geographic as a design question. The Strait of Gibraltar is the only natural entrance to the semi-enclosed Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, second only to the Malacca Straits in Singapore. Europe and Africa are separated by 14 km at the narrowest point, and ferries cross between the two continents every day in as little as 35 minutes.

The Strait of Gibraltar has for long stimulated the architectural imaginary. As early as the 1920s the German architect Herman Sorgel proposed damming Gibraltar and draining the Mediterranean to unite Europe and Africa into a new supercontinent. The project aspired to provide a "habitat" in North Africa for an overpopulated Europe. How do contemporary issues of access to water, food, energy, and the rescaling of the political question requalify the megaproject imaginary, regional networks, and the geographic project?

The studio explores the architectural and urban potentials of the territory of Gibraltar addressing its conditions as a spatial enclave, a gateway to the Mediterranean, and a bridge between Africa and Europe. Along the lines of the journal New Geographies, the studio responds to a condition in which designers are increasingly compelled to address and transform larger contexts and to respond to problems that had been confined to the domains of engineering, ecology, or policy.
Sport is a multifaceted phenomenon that is often utilized as a powerful agent for social and economic development. Individuals, institutions, businesses, and governments have actively leveraged sport to drive significant impact and development in a variety of social, economic, and political contexts in Korea and of Korean sports abroad. Although emphasis on the elite sport system and hosting mega events (e.g., 1988 Seoul Olympics, 2002 FIFA World Cup, and 2018 PyeongChang Olympics) may have contributed to gain significant international recognition and national pride, much less has been scrutinized or documented about the fundamental values, social implications, and complex dynamics of sport in the context of contemporary Korea. How do media representations of sport contribute to Korean nationalistic sentiments? How are sport articulated in cultural products (such as Hallyu)? How does Korea fit into the global promotion–and the reception of that promotion–of martial arts such as Taekwondo? How does/whether policy-setting around mega events widen the disparity between elite and amateur sport? What are the challenges for sport properties and facilities to become more financially viable? What is the current state of players’ association in Korean professional sport industry? What are the effects of scandals such as sport betting and match-fixing on not only the sport industry in Korea, but also on Korea’s national self-image? What important challenges and issues remain for exploration to understand sport’s full potential in making positive and sustainable economic impact and social utilities in Korea?

Taking a multidisciplinary approach, the international conference, “(Re)-Discovering Sport in Korea: Guts, Glory, and Geurimja” hopes to bring together scholars from across disciplines to address any and all aspects of the phenomenon of sport and the physical culture in contemporary Korea. This conference, sponsored by the University of Michigan Nam Center for Korean Studies, School of Kinesiology, and the Academy of Korean Studies, is not only the first conference to contemplate Korea in the context of sports, but also will be the largest academic gathering in the United States dedicated to various themes around Korean sports. We hope to channel the integrative and cohesive characteristics inherent in sport into this conference to discover–or re-discover–the role of sport in Korea. The goal of this conference is to encourage, support, and showcase research that examines the role of sport in Korea from a multitude of perspectives.

Please direct any further questions about the conference to the organizers at sport.korea@umich.edu.

Organizers: Dae Hee Kwak (School of Kinesiology, University of Michigan), Nojin Kwak (Nam Center/Department of Communication Studies, University of Michigan)

Sponsored by the University of Michigan Nam Center for Korean Studies, School of Kinesiology, and the Academy of Korean Studies",

(Free parking is available on Sundays.)

Both artists work in a variety of media, and have an ongoing commitment to non-objective painting. The richly developed surfaces of Dennis Guastella's paintings demonstrate his passion for the physical beauty of paint explored through a variety of application methods ranging from squeeze bottles to thick layers of acrylic paint that are dried on a non-absorbent surface, removed, and then cut and collaged onto a final painting panel.

Ron Teachworth's abstractions evolved from his early landscape paintings. These interpretations developed into paintings called "Sky Fields" where the entire canvas became a unified surface activated by thousands of small brush strokes of color.

To learn more about the artists visit their web sites below.

Dennis Guastella: http://theartofdennisguastella.blogspot.com

Ron Teachworth: http://www.ronteachworth.com

Lou and Peter Berryman are musical humorists who have delighted nationwide audiences for more than 30 years. Frequent comparisons to Tom Lehrer (who said, "I love your material, and if I were still performing, I'd steal it"), Flanders and Swann, and Burns and Allen notwithstanding, these two are originals, blending Midwestern culture with intelligent observation in a whimsical and wonderfully accessible performance. They have produced a dozen albums and three songbooks of their original and hilarious, quirky, yet oddly profound music, and they've toured the U.S. and Canada to rave reviews. Lou and Peter Berryman songs are being sung around the world, by a legion of professional musicians including Garrison Keillor, as well as shower singers everywhere. The pair began their musical partnership in high school in Appleton, Wisconsin, and their friendship survived a brief marriage before maturing into a durable creative collaboration.
",
