The Qinghai Province is China’s most ethnically diverse and the least-populated of all Chinese provinces. The area is similar to Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, and Utah, except that 19,000 - foot mountain peaks, high plains, sheep herders, wild yaks, camels, temples, monks, and small farms sparsely spread in the region. Currently the Kunlun National Park is being developed in partnership with Yellowstone National Park in an effort to preserve the natural wonders and the wildlife of the Kunlun Mountains. There will be 100 plus captivating photographs showcasing the mystery and beauty of mountain life and environments of the Kunlun National Park. Kunlun Wild Life photography exhibition will be held at two different locations: 10/12-10/31 at the Art Lounge at the Michigan Union and 10/21 – 11/9 at Atrium 4 at Palmer Commons. She enjoys creating an assortment of useful and whimsical ceramics incorporating various techniques. Her tactile reliefs and handcrafted creations are finished with either ceramic glaze or acid wash. Examples of each of these techniques are included in this exhibit. She has received instruction from Professor Sadashi Inuzuka of the U-M School of Art and Design from 2002-2012, the Ox-Bow School for the Arts and locally at Yourist Studio.
The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan, and in 1982, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium, including Dominick Labino, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter. ",

She has returned to a technique that she learned years ago as an exchange student in Peru - thinning and shaping porcelain using a wooden paddle and river stone. Tremel finds the challenge of piercing the thin walls of the clay at their most fragile state to be an exercise in understanding the fleeting tenuousness of beauty itself. Among other things, Tremel is a lecturer at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.",

The functional white ware is lighthearted, so simple tasks such as eating and drinking can become playful. Each piece is individually handcrafted with feedback from her standard parti (two-colored) poodle, who loves to crack a joke. Blackburn earned a BFA from Ohio State University, and her studio is Grins Clay.",

After receiving a BFA in art and interior design from Wayne State, she began to explore fibers as an art form. Many of her art quilts have architectural themes but she is most fascinated by the interplay of hue and pattern, often drawing inspiration from the color, energy, movement, and rhythms of ethnographic rituals as well as jazz, blues and gospel music. Harris’ goal is to make her quilts dance with the same excitement, exuberance and joy that music gives her. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries nationally and internationally, and she is much in demand as a lecturer and juror.",

To create her witty fabric paintings, she first hunts for her palette of fabrics: linens, flannels, cottons, calicos, even velvet. Then she cuts her designs freehand, using the sewing machine as a drawing tool to define the borders of her figures with a beautiful, almost invisible satin-stitch. Roberts-Antieau then finishes her pieces with hand embroidery work, and frames the finished art behind glass in hand-painted frames. On exhibit in permanent collections across the country, the joy in Roberts-Antieau’s award winning work is contagious.
Reception: Friday, October 11 @ 7:00pm in North Quad Space 2435
Exhibition: October 1-18, 9am - 6pm

The exhibition foregrounds the Strait of Gibraltar both as a geographical unit that separates and links lands on either side, as well as a space in its own right with programs such as fishing, swimming, travelling, shipping, and conquering. Greetings from Gibraltar draws on the geographic as a design paradigm, a condition in which designers are being compelled to address and transform larger contexts and address issues, which had previously been confined to the domains of engineering, ecology, or regional planning.

The need to address such ”˜geographic’ aspects has prompted designers to re-examine tools of representation as well forms of the architectural object.

The work was developed in the context of a 2013 University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning Travel Studio to the Strait of Gibraltar. Over the four weeks of June 2013, the studio travelled from Madrid through Granada, Seville, Cadiz, Gibraltar/La Linea, Algeciras, Ceuta, Tangier, and Fez. The studio was initiated in analytic and cartographic investigations of individual port-cities case studies, subsequently complied to highlight relational geographies, flows, add exchanges across the Strait. The travel journey began with a passion for sensory and aesthetic knowledge anchored by seascapes.

The resultant is a landscape that depicts space and time. The postcard-joiners construct a map of the Strait together with the series of architectural interventions proposed in that geography. It
also creates a narrative, as if the viewer moved through the space, encountering a series of detail views as well as constructing a panorama and a map of the landscape.

Gibraltar Studio 2013
Professors: Rania Ghosn and El Hadi Jazairy
Students: John Arnold, Peter Dumbadze, Lyla Feinsod, Phillip Gavrilovski, Monica Griffin, Andrew Ko, Yuan Liang, Yunzhi Ou, Jason Park, Austin Tsai, Adam Wagner, Suo Ya

Special thanks to Andrew Ko for coordinating the exhibition.

Acknowledgments: Monica Ponce De Leon, Dean Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning

A note about the travel studio to Gibraltar:
The studio investigates the geographic as a design question. The Strait of Gibraltar is the only natural entrance to the semi-enclosed Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world, second only to the Malacca Straits in Singapore. Europe and Africa are separated by 14 km at the narrowest point, and ferries cross between the two continents every day in as little as 35 minutes.

The Strait of Gibraltar has for long stimulated the architectural imaginary. As early as the 1920s the German architect Herman Sorgel proposed damming Gibraltar and draining the Mediterranean to unite Europe and Africa into a new supercontinent. The project aspired to provide a "habitat" in North Africa for an overpopulated Europe. How do contemporary issues of access to water, food, energy, and the rescaling of the political question requalify the megaproject imaginary, regional networks, and the geographic project?

The studio explores the architectural and urban potentials of the territory of Gibraltar addressing its conditions as a spatial enclave, a gateway to the Mediterranean, and a bridge between Africa and Europe. Along the lines of the journal New Geographies, the studio responds to a condition in which designers are increasingly compelled to address and transform larger contexts and to respond to problems that had been confined to the domains of engineering, ecology, or policy.",

The exhibition, in conjunction with the "unretiring" of Harmon's famed number 98 jersey this season, highlights Harmon’s college career at Michigan, both as a student and an athlete. Using archival documents, photographs, and artifacts, including material recently acquired through Harmon’s son, Mark Harmon, the exhibit traces Harmon’s career as the University of Michigan’s first Heisman Trophy winner, World War II pilot and war hero, and a pioneering radio and television broadcaster. The presentation will show how such images functioned as instruments of subversion during the uprisings. It will explore the extent to which such battling images helped contest the status quo, build group consensus, and secure both international and local support for the uprisings. Dr. Gruber is currently writing her next book, “The Praiseworthy One: The Prophet Mohammad in Islamic Texts and Images.”
When it comes to the politics of sexuality, language matters, and examining queer theory in translation shows just how critical it is. Through close readings of Japanese translations of texts by Eve Sedgwick, Leo Bersani, David Halperin and others, this talk traces the reception of queer theory in Japan and develops a queer theory of translation itself.

About the Speaker:
J. Keith Vincent, CJS’s 2013-14 Toyota Visiting Professor, is an Associate Professor of Japanese and Comparative Literature at Boston University. Among his most recent achievements, Professor Vincent received the 2011 U.S. Japan Friendship Commission Prize for the Translation of Japanese Literature from the Donald Keene Center of Japanese Culture for his translation of Okamoto Kanoko’s A Riot of Goldfish (Hesperus Press, 2010). He also published his book, Two-Timing Modernity: Homosocial Narrative in Modern Japanese Fiction, in 2012 from the Harvard University Asia Center.",

(Free parking is available on Sundays.)

Both artists work in a variety of media, and have an ongoing commitment to non-objective painting. The richly developed surfaces of Dennis Guastella's paintings demonstrate his passion for the physical beauty of paint explored through a variety of application methods ranging from squeeze bottles to thick layers of acrylic paint that are dried on a non-absorbent surface, removed, and then cut and collaged onto a final painting panel.

Ron Teachworth's abstractions evolved from his early landscape paintings. These interpretations developed into paintings called "Sky Fields" where the entire canvas became a unified surface activated by thousands of small brush strokes of color.

To learn more about the artists visit their web sites below.

Dennis Guastella: http://theartofdennisguastella.blogspot.com

Ron Teachworth: http://www.ronteachworth.com

Lauren Benton, professor of history and dean, Graduate School of Arts and Science, New York University.

In recent years, as international lawyers have debated justifications for humanitarian interventions, the history of protection has attracted new attention. Some accounts run from Grotius, whose arguments about the right to punish violators of natural law are seen as foundational, to the nineteenth-century campaign against the slave trade and to twentieth-century declarations against genocide. Some accounts highlight the late-nineteenth century imperial origins of protection, noting that “protected states” and “protectorates” were formally defined in this period in ways that helped to shape a European-dominated international legal order.

Conflicts over colonial governance in the early nineteenth century represent important, and understudied, contexts for the development of ideas about protection. In the British Empire, colonial legal reform projects were ubiquitous and influenced the way British authority was constructed, imagined, and opposed in newly acquired colonies. The legal politics of Ceylon and the Ionian Islands show that discourses of protection were central both to colonial judicial reform projects and to expansionist schemes for the empire, supporting a vision of global order centered around imperial law.

Lauren Benton is Professor of History, Affiliate Professor of Law, and Dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Science at New York University. Benton’s research focuses on the comparative history of empires and the relation between imperial law and global order. Benton’s books include an edited volume published this year (Lauren Benton and Richard Ross, Legal Pluralism and Empires, 1500-1850 and two books on law and empire: A Search for Sovereignty: Law and Geography in European Empires, 1400-1900 (2010); and Law and Colonial Cultures: Legal Regimes in World History, 1400-1900 (2002), which was awarded the World History Association Book Award and the James Willard Hurst Book Prize. Benton is currently working with Lisa Ford on a book about legal politics in the British Empire in the early nineteenth century.

Part of Rethinking Sovereignty, a multi-disciplinary lecture series that explores the tension between the powers of centralized states in the modern world and their uncertain political and geographical peripheries.
We are interested in the origins of phenotypic diversity, and work at the intersection of phylogenetics, ecology, and organismal biology to reconstruct the natural history of adaptation. Questions that motivate us include: why have certain traits evolved multiple times in certain lineages but not in others? What are the initial steps in the evolution of a complex trait, and how do those initial steps influence subsequent evolutionary possibilities? In this talk I'll focus on our recent work in two areas. First, we will look critically at the evolutionary dynamics of 'leaf economic spectrum' traits within a closely related group of deciduous woody plants; second, we'll focus on understanding the partially shared evolutionary trajectories of two alternative and important adaptive syndromes in plants, C4 and CAM photosynthesis.
Thursdays-Relationship Enhancement Series. Dealing with difficult people in your life can be extremely stressful. Unfortunately, few people ever learn the high-level skills needed to manage difficult relationships. This series will help you do just that.

Friends: Finding and Keeping Them. If you struggle to form connections with new people, then this session will be helpful to you. We will explore strategies for meeting new people and forming new friendships. Depending on the needs of the participants, we may also talk about ways to deepen the friendships that you already have.

Dates: 9/19, 10/17, 11/14, 12/19

Each Thursday from 4:15-5:30 p.m. you and other interested students will meet with a counselor and focus on one of the most frequent concerns of U-M students. These are the very issues that U-M students have told us are the most common issues they deal with every day. The counselor will share some helpful information, talk about strategies and clinical resources, and she or he will also make time for you to share a little bit about your concerns (if you wish to do so).
",

Stamps, the Speaker Series brings respected emerging and established artists/designers from a broad spectrum of media to the School to conduct a public lecture and engage with students, faculty, and the larger University and Ann Arbor communities.

Salvatore Iaconesi is an engineer, artist, hacker, interaction designer and principal of Art is Open Source (AOS), an international informal network exploring the mutation of human beings with the wide and ubiquitous accessibility and availability of digital technologies and networks. AOS moves across the arts and sciences, using technology, communication, performance, art and design, to instigate emotional actions and processes that expose the dynamics of our contemporary world. They do this in academic, artistic, business and activist domains. Projects have included the first Open Source Cure for Cancer, the real-time digital life of cities, the story of a baby artificial intelligence called Angel F going to the United Nations to defend its digital rights, a very dangerous videogame, human tamagotchis and a fictional company using a very naughty business model.
Salvatore Iaconesi is joined by fellow AOS principal, Oriana Persico, for a visual, sonic journey through the new rituals and emergent ways in which we have radically changed the ways in which we work, relate, consume, feel emotions, have sex and entertain ourselves.",

Its dozen songs are laced through with strands of indigenous roots elements–Heartland hoedown folk (“American,” with guest Jake Owen spinning out the guitar solo), Celtic-rooted mountain music (“Walk Through This World,” “Flyaway”), zydeco (“Everything You Wanted”), Southern roadhouse soul (“Don’t Bring Me Down”), Chicago blues (“Shake the Fever”) and 100-proof roots rock (“All the World”). These tracks are played with heartfelt emotion as well as jaw-dropping skillfulness by the band–Neumann on vocals and guitars, original member Michael Ramos (Patty Griffin, John Mellencamp) on keyboards and accordion, longtime BoDeans bassist Ryan Bowman and new member Warren Hood, a fiddle/violin virtuoso from Austin.

As it turns out, the album title bears a thematic resonance as well as a stylistic one. With American Made, the BoDeans have created a soul-stirring song cycle that directly reflects the American experience at this critical moment in our history. The album–which also includes a powerful rendition of Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire”–was inspired by Neumann’s blue-collar upbringing and his desire to express what a great country America remains, despite its troubles and the challenges facing it today.

“As we’ve moved into the new millennium, we’ve begun to question our identity as Americans–who we are, or who we want to be,” says Neumann. “With the onset of the Tea party and the Occupy movement, it feels like we’re pulling in two very different directions. The song ”˜American’ talks about this land of ”˜endless possibility,’ and ”˜Where else in the world you ever gonna find this kind of ideology?’ We’re lucky to have the rights and opportunities that we have, but I believe those rights come with a responsibility to help each other along. It’s wrong to stockpile millions or billions of dollars while all your neighbors struggle to survive. It feels like we’re losing the common sense that has always guided us, and that worries me. We’re so out of touch with each other–and just trying to find an American-made product has become almost comical. I wanted to bring that all of that to the surface–hence the album title.”

If American Made is about resilience in the face of daunting obstacles, the same can be said of the unforeseen circumstances that led to the album’s creation. Sam Llanas, one of the original members, left the band last year in order to launch a solo career, the news coming just one day after the release of the band’s previous LP, Indigo Dreams. When Llanas quit, Neumann could have thrown in the towel, but he chose to stick with what he’d begun nearly three decades earlier as the band’s driving force and the architect of its sound. So he and his fellow band members cinched up their belts and carried on. Since then, Neumann has discovered that while unexpected change can be difficult, it can also be revitalizing.

The first order of business was to come up with a cohesive batch of material–Neumann didn’t realize going into the process that it would yield what amounted to the most intensely personal songs he’d ever written.

On “Jay Leno,” Neumann metaphorically invokes the name of the pop-culture figure in recounting a traumatizing childhood experience. “When I was eight years old, growing up in Milwaukee, my family and I came home on a frigid February evening to find our back alley lined with police cars,” he recalls. “Someone had found a young girl’s dead body in the garage next door to my house. Even at a young age, I’d seen a lot of violence in our lower-income neighborhood, but this really shook me up, and my family as well. Soon afterward, my parents moved me and my brother out to Waukesha, a small town just 20 miles west of Milwaukee, but it seemed like a world away from my old neighborhood. I’m not sure why I decided to write a song about it, but as I worked on it, I realized that in a sense this girl may have saved my life. People take drastic measures to get out of poverty, and I’m sure my life would have turned out very differently had we not moved.”

“Chemical” was inspired by growing up with an alcoholic father, and by the many other chemically dependent people in Neumann’s life. “With my dad, even as a kid I could see the writing on the wall,” he says. “I used to feel like there was something he was looking for at the bottom of that brandy bottle. At one point, I called AA trying to find some place I could take him to get help, but the guy on the other end of the line told me I was a fool for trying. He told me I couldn’t help him, that he needed to make that call himself. Sure enough, a few years later, he dropped dead; the booze had killed him.”

As for “I’m on Fire,” Neumann says, “Springsteen’s lyrics have always spoken to me. I know exactly what he’s talking about–I’ve grown up with the same feelings in my gut. This is one of a handful of his songs that I felt I could even approach. I’ve sung it for years. While we were in the studio, we blew it down for fun and it just turned out really nice.

“On another level,” he points out, “the record was inspired by the pop music I listened to on the radio as a kid, feeling the mesmerizing energy busting out of that tiny speaker. As always, I’ve tried to tap into that energy in my songwriting.”

When he’d completed the new material, Neumann called on John Alagia (Dave Matthews, John Mayer, Jason Mraz, Ben Folds) to produce and mix the record, with the exception of “Jay Leno,” which was mixed by Jim Scott (Wilco, Tom Petty), who’d worked with the band in the mid-’90s. Determined to make the best possible album no matter the cost, Neumann sold his truck, one of his most treasured possessions, in order to cover the cost of recording at L.A.’s state-of-the-art Village Recorder, where the band had worked in years past with T Bone Burnett. Alagia brought in Victor Indrizzo (Beck, Sheryl Crow) to play drums. They tracked the entire album in just three days.

Thanks to Neumann’s renewed passion and determination, the BoDeans are still going strong a quarter century after their Burnett-produced debut Love & Hope & Sex & Dreams led them to win a Rolling Stone readers’ poll as “Best New American Band,” and nearly 20 years after their “Closer to Free” became a massive hit and the theme song of the sitcom Party of Five. The BoDeans continue to tour the U.S. year-round, exposing the kids of their longtime steadfast fans to heartfelt, trend-free, American-made music.

But things could’ve turned out very differently. Neumann acknowledges that Llanas’ abrupt departure had triggered an intensive and extended bout of soul searching, causing him to question the basic assumptions he’d carried with him through the life of his band.

“In my frustration, I asked myself, What is BoDeans?” he says. “Is it me, or someone else, or the music. I thought about all the letters people have written me over the years explaining how our music had played an intimate role in some part of their lives–a wedding, a death, a celebration, growing up, growing old. And I came to the realization that the key to the BoDeans’ identity is the fans’ connection to our music. So the inspiration for this record is just that–to carry on with what I started many, many years ago, and to do it for as long as people continue to feel that connection. That’s why I’m so excited about this record. I’ve been humbled by the notion that the fans have given me the chance to go on.”",
