SUMMARY:Exhibition:Kunlun Wild Life: Photography Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:The Qinghai Province is China’s most ethnically diverse and the least-populated of all Chinese provinces. The area is similar to Montana\, Wyoming\, Colorado\, and Utah\, except that 19\,000 - foot mountain peaks\, high plains\, sheep herders\, wild yaks\, camels\, temples\, monks\, and small farms sparsely spread in the region. Currently the Kunlun National Park is being developed in partnership with Yellowstone National Park in an effort to preserve the natural wonders and the wildlife of the Kunlun Mountains. There will be 100 plus captivating photographs showcasing the mystery and beauty of mountain life and environments of the Kunlun National Park. Kunlun Wild Life photography exhibition will be held at two different locations: 10/12-10/31 at the Art Lounge at the Michigan Union and 10/21 – 11/9 at Atrium 4 at Palmer Commons. Mr. MA Weidong\, a philanthropist and the founder of the Kunlun National Park\, will give a presentation entitled “Beautiful Landscape: Kunlun National Park” on Wednesday\, 12 pm\, October 16 at the Art Lounge\, Michigan Union. DESCRIPTION:Local artist\, teacher and floral painter Joanne Porter has always been inspired by the seasonal variations in the garden. In her watercolors\, she captures the freshness of spring\, the warm palette of summer and the crispness of fall. Using many layers of watercolor paint\, Porter conveys the delicate movement of the flowers as well as their richness of color. Her educational background includes a BFA and MFA from the U-M School of Art & Design\, and her work has been in one person gallery shows and on permanent display in hospitals\, businesses and schools throughout southeastern Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:In this current body of work\, Kate Tremel is interested in taking a fresh look at traditional pottery forms within a functional context. She has returned to a technique that she learned years ago as an exchange student in Peru - thinning and shaping porcelain using a wooden paddle and river stone. Tremel finds the challenge of piercing the thin walls of the clay at their most fragile state to be an exercise in understanding the fleeting tenuousness of beauty itself. Among other things\, Tremel is a lecturer at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

DESCRIPTION:Ann Arbor artist Lilli Blackburn creates functional and sculptural works in clay. In this body of work\, poodles are represented in various dilemmas of life. The functional white ware is lighthearted\, so simple tasks such as eating and drinking can become playful. Each piece is individually handcrafted with feedback from her standard parti (two-colored) poodle\, who loves to crack a joke. Blackburn earned a BFA from Ohio State University\, and her studio is Grins Clay.

DESCRIPTION:Textile artist Carole Harris is a Detroit native. Her mother introduced her to needle arts at an early age. After receiving a BFA in art and interior design from Wayne State\, she began to explore fibers as an art form. Many of her art quilts have architectural themes but she is most fascinated by the interplay of hue and pattern\, often drawing inspiration from the color\, energy\, movement\, and rhythms of ethnographic rituals as well as jazz\, blues and gospel music. Harris’ goal is to make her quilts dance with the same excitement\, exuberance and joy that music gives her. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries nationally and internationally\, and she is much in demand as a lecturer and juror.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Art of Storytelling: Fabric Appliqué
DESCRIPTION:Chris Roberts-Antieau’s work is about the mysterious origin of joy and the wonder of childhood. To create her witty fabric paintings\, she first hunts for her palette of fabrics: linens\, flannels\, cottons\, calicos\, even velvet. Then she cuts her designs freehand\, using the sewing machine as a drawing tool to define the borders of her figures with a beautiful\, almost invisible satin-stitch. Roberts-Antieau then finishes her pieces with hand embroidery work\, and frames the finished art behind glass in hand-painted frames. On exhibit in permanent collections across the country\, the joy in Roberts-Antieau’s award winning work is contagious.

DESCRIPTION:Reception: Friday\, October 11 @ 7:00pm in North Quad Space 2435\nExhibition: October 1-18\, 9am - 6pm\n\nThe exhibition foregrounds the Strait of Gibraltar both as a geographical unit that separates and links lands on either side\, as well as a space in its own right with programs such as fishing\, swimming\, travelling\, shipping\, and conquering. Greetings from Gibraltar draws on the geographic as a design paradigm\, a condition in which designers are being compelled to address and transform larger contexts and address issues\, which had previously been confined to the domains of engineering\, ecology\, or regional planning. \n\nThe need to address such ”˜geographic’ aspects has prompted designers to re-examine tools of representation as well forms of the architectural object.\n\nThe work was developed in the context of a 2013 University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning Travel Studio to the Strait of Gibraltar. Over the four weeks of June 2013\, the studio travelled from Madrid through Granada\, Seville\, Cadiz\, Gibraltar/La Linea\, Algeciras\, Ceuta\, Tangier\, and Fez. The studio was initiated in analytic and cartographic investigations of individual port-cities case studies\, subsequently complied to highlight relational geographies\, flows\, add exchanges across the Strait. The travel journey began with a passion for sensory and aesthetic knowledge anchored by seascapes.\n\nThe resultant is a landscape that depicts space and time. The postcard-joiners construct a map of the Strait together with the series of architectural interventions proposed in that geography. The Strait of Gibraltar is the only natural entrance to the semi-enclosed Mediterranean Sea. It is one of the busiest shipping lanes in the world\, second only to the Malacca Straits in Singapore. How do contemporary issues of access to water\, food\, energy\, and the rescaling of the political question requalify the megaproject imaginary\, regional networks\, and the geographic project?\n\nThe studio explores the architectural and urban potentials of the territory of Gibraltar addressing its conditions as a spatial enclave\, a gateway to the Mediterranean\, and a bridge between Africa and Europe. Greetings from Gibraltar draws on the geographic as a design paradigm\, a condition in which designers are being compelled to address and transform larger contexts and address issues\, which had previously been confined to the domains of engineering\, ecology\, or regional planning. \n\nThe need to address such ”˜geographic’ aspects has prompted designers to re-examine tools of representation as well forms of the architectural object.\n\nThe work was developed in the context of a 2013 University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning Travel Studio to the Strait of Gibraltar. Over the four weeks of June 2013\, the studio travelled from Madrid through Granada\, Seville\, Cadiz\, Gibraltar/La Linea\, Algeciras\, Ceuta\, Tangier\, and Fez. The studio was initiated in analytic and cartographic investigations of individual port-cities case studies\, subsequently complied to highlight relational geographies\, flows\, add exchanges across the Strait. The travel journey began with a passion for sensory and aesthetic knowledge anchored by seascapes.\n\nThe resultant is a landscape that depicts space and time. The postcard-joiners construct a map of the Strait together with the series of architectural interventions proposed in that geography. (Free parking is available on Sundays.)\n\nBoth artists work in a variety of media\, and have an ongoing commitment to non-objective painting.The richly developed surfaces of Dennis Guastella's paintings demonstrate his passion for the physical beauty of paint explored through a variety of application methods ranging from squeeze bottles to thick layers of acrylic paint that are dried on a non-absorbent surface\, removed\, and then cut and collaged onto a final painting panel. \n\nRon Teachworth's abstractions evolved from his early landscape paintings. DESCRIPTION:Rising young South African artist Mary Sibande constructs elaborate visual narratives to consider race\, gender\, and class in post-colonial South Africa. Rooted in her own family’s history of three generations of women as domestic servants\, Sibande’s larger-than-life figures clothed in yards of fabric confront the viewer with the stark limits of cultural heritage as well as the possibility of transformation. Sibande’s Ann Arbor fellowship includes an original installation at the U-M Institute for the Humanities gallery\, a Penny Stamps lecture\, an open studio at the Stamps School on North Campus\, and exhibition of Sibande’s existing work at Gallery DAAS\, the U-M Museum of Art\, and the Stamps School Slusser Gallery.

DESCRIPTION:Marshall Brown is an architect\, urban designer and principal of Marshall Brown Projects. His practice has worked on several projects in Chicago\, including the Navy Pier redevelopment and a master plan for the neighborhood of Washington Park. He is also currently Director of the Master of Landscape Architecture program at Illinois Institute of Technology.\n\nHe recently founded the urbanism\, art and culture think tank NEW PROJECTS in collaboration with curator Stephanie Smith. In 2003 he founded the Yards Development Workshop\, a studio that set out to hi-jack Frank Gehry’s Atlantic Yards project in Brooklyn\,New York. Marshall Brown’s work has been exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit and Western Exhibitions in Chicago.\n\nBrown is on the editorial board of the Journal of Architectural Education and has lectured at the Chicago Humanities Festival\, University of Michigan\, Northwestern University\, the Graham Foundation\, and the Arts Club of Chicago. His projects and essays have appeared in several books and journals\, including Architectural Record\, The New York Daily News\, Art Papers\, The Believer\, and New Directions in Sustainable Design.

DESCRIPTION:In 1968\, Ogawa decided to form Ogawa Productions and locate it at the newly announced construction site of Narita International Airport in a district called Sanrizuka. Ogawa chose to locate his company in the most radical of the villages\, Heta. Some farmers immediately sold their land\; others vehemently protested\, and drew the support of social movements across the country. Together they clashed with riot police sent in to protect surveyors\, who were plotting out the airport. Summer in Sanrizuka is a messy film\, but its chaos communicates the passions and actions on the ground.

DESCRIPTION:With sales of three million albums worldwide\, the Verve Pipe was one of Michigan rock and roll's great success stories of the 1990s. Formed in East Lansing\, the band gained a following for its textured rock songs distinguished by inventive arrangements\, soul-searching lyrics and layered vocals. Lead singer Brian Vander Ark has gone onto a solo career and become an Ark favorite with his songs of family\, love\, and loss. But after being approached to submit a song for a compilation album called \"Calling All Kids\,\" the Verve Pipe reunited to record their award-nominated kids' CD\, \"A Family Album.\" Now the creative spark touched off by those sessions has led to more Verve Pipe music for adults as well The Verve Pipe has had a reputation for dazzling live shows from the start\, and now they're back\, up close and personal\, at The Ark!\n

DESCRIPTION:Pre-concert lecture at 7:15 in the Lower Lobby.     Kenneth Kiesler and Christopher James Lees\, conductors. SMTD welcomes U-M alum David T. Little to campus for the Michigan premiere of his newly re-orchestrated work haunted topography\, a darkly contemplative work juxtaposed between a dramatic operatic suite and a falsely charming Italianate symphony. On the second half of the concert\, the USO performs one of the most exciting and brilliant orchestra showpieces of the 20th Century\, Concerto for Orchestra by renowned Polish composer Witold Lutoslawski.
