SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Pierced Porcelain
DESCRIPTION:In this current body of work\, Kate Tremel is interested in taking a fresh look at traditional pottery forms within a functional context. She has returned to a technique that she learned years ago as an exchange student in Peru - thinning and shaping porcelain using a wooden paddle and river stone. Tremel finds the challenge of piercing the thin walls of the clay at their most fragile state to be an exercise in understanding the fleeting tenuousness of beauty itself. Among other things\, Tremel is a lecturer at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Stitched Impressions: Art Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Textile artist Carole Harris is a Detroit native. Her mother introduced her to needle arts at an early age. After receiving a BFA in art and interior design from Wayne State\, she began to explore fibers as an art form. Many of her art quilts have architectural themes but she is most fascinated by the interplay of hue and pattern\, often drawing inspiration from the color\, energy\, movement\, and rhythms of ethnographic rituals as well as jazz\, blues and gospel music. Harris’ goal is to make her quilts dance with the same excitement\, exuberance and joy that music gives her. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries nationally and internationally\, and she is much in demand as a lecturer and juror.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Art of Storytelling: Fabric Appliqué
DESCRIPTION:Chris Roberts-Antieau’s work is about the mysterious origin of joy and the wonder of childhood. To create her witty fabric paintings\, she first hunts for her palette of fabrics: linens\, flannels\, cottons\, calicos\, even velvet. Then she cuts her designs freehand\, using the sewing machine as a drawing tool to define the borders of her figures with a beautiful\, almost invisible satin-stitch. Roberts-Antieau then finishes her pieces with hand embroidery work\, and frames the finished art behind glass in hand-painted frames. On exhibit in permanent collections across the country\, the joy in Roberts-Antieau’s award winning work is contagious.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CCS Noon Lecture Series. \"Marriage Networks and the Geography of Power in Ninth-Century China\"
DESCRIPTION:How does one account for the long-term survival of the medieval Chinese aristocratic clans despite important institutional developments\, including the expanded use of the civil service examinations? How does one then explain the sudden collapse of these families at the turn of the tenth century? By exploiting a large prosopographic database\, this paper will explore how a better understanding of the geographic distribution of political power and of the Tang political elite's social networks can help resolve these questions.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Four Decades
DESCRIPTION:Four Decades\, a new exhibition featuring the work of School of Art & Design Professor Dennis Guastella and Ron Teachworth will present a retrospective selection of each artist’s work from the 1970's to the present.\n\nA public reception honoring the artists will take place in the Gallery on Sunday\, October 13\, from 3-5pm. (Free parking is available on Sundays.)\n\nBoth artists work in a variety of media\, and have an ongoing commitment to non-objective painting. The richly developed surfaces of Dennis Guastella's paintings demonstrate his passion for the physical beauty of paint explored through a variety of application methods ranging from squeeze bottles to thick layers of acrylic paint that are dried on a non-absorbent surface\, removed\, and then cut and collaged onto a final painting panel. \n\nRon Teachworth's abstractions evolved from his early landscape paintings. These interpretations developed into paintings called \"Sky Fields\" where the entire canvas became a unified surface activated by thousands of small brush strokes of color. \n\nTo learn more about the artists visit their web sites below.\n\nDennis Guastella: http://theartofdennisguastella.blogspot.com\n\nRon Teachworth: http://www.ronteachworth.com\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Human Rights Initiative Lecture: \"Socializing States: How to Promote Human Rights through International Law\"
DESCRIPTION:Guest lecturer Ryan Goodman will explore the subject of network analysis.\n\nNetwork analysis has emerged as one of the most powerful tools for policy makers\, stakeholders\, and academics interested in political and social change. As a recent survey in the Annual Review of Political Science explains\, “network analysis ”¦ offers a means of addressing one of the holy grails of the social sciences: effectively analyzing the interdependence and flows of influence among individuals\, groups\, and institutions.” Social network theorists study the structure of connections between members of a relevant network. The composition of these social ties and the relative position of actors within these structures are generally thought to influence the prospects for\, and patterns of\, the diffusion of ideas and behaviors.\n\nNetwork analysis needs to play a greater role in theory construction and empirical study of the effects of international law. Most relevant is network research that directly examines the state–rather than research that extrapolates from the study of individuals and other groups. This body of network analysis poses several important challenges to existing approaches in international law. It also yields important new insights--and suggests new lines of inquiry--about how best to understand the power and perils of international legal regimes. These intellectual payoffs are especially true when one taps into empirical studies that take seriously cultural mechanisms of diffusion across interstate networks. We thus highlight forms of socialization–such as emulation\, social persuasion\, cognitive identity formation--that can propel the spread of behavioral norms and reshape preferences across interstate networks. The available research should help us to build more effective and principled global institutions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:My Pekar Years (2004-2012): Creating Comix and Exploring Judaism with 'Our Man'
DESCRIPTION:Harvey Pekar’s self-published series American Splendor proved that comics could be more than just super-heroes. Pekar’s legacy pervades much of contemporary independent comix. This presentation charts the final work of Pekar\, Not The Israel My Parents Promised Me\, a graphic novel published by Hill & Wang in July 2012. Told over the course of a single day in Cleveland\, Ohio\, the book follows Pekar and myself as we wrestle with the mythologies and realities surrounding the Jewish homeland. This session is an invitation to explore Jewish identity and Israel through comix. I will discuss what it was like working with the famous curmudgeon and present rare video footage and drawings of “Our Man” before his untimely death in 2010.
