SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Pierced Porcelain
DESCRIPTION:In this current body of work\, Kate Tremel is interested in taking a fresh look at traditional pottery forms within a functional context. She has returned to a technique that she learned years ago as an exchange student in Peru - thinning and shaping porcelain using a wooden paddle and river stone. Tremel finds the challenge of piercing the thin walls of the clay at their most fragile state to be an exercise in understanding the fleeting tenuousness of beauty itself. Among other things\, Tremel is a lecturer at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Stitched Impressions: Art Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Textile artist Carole Harris is a Detroit native. Her mother introduced her to needle arts at an early age. After receiving a BFA in art and interior design from Wayne State\, she began to explore fibers as an art form. Many of her art quilts have architectural themes but she is most fascinated by the interplay of hue and pattern\, often drawing inspiration from the color\, energy\, movement\, and rhythms of ethnographic rituals as well as jazz\, blues and gospel music. Harris’ goal is to make her quilts dance with the same excitement\, exuberance and joy that music gives her. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries nationally and internationally\, and she is much in demand as a lecturer and juror.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Art of Storytelling: Fabric Appliqué
DESCRIPTION:Chris Roberts-Antieau’s work is about the mysterious origin of joy and the wonder of childhood. To create her witty fabric paintings\, she first hunts for her palette of fabrics: linens\, flannels\, cottons\, calicos\, even velvet. Then she cuts her designs freehand\, using the sewing machine as a drawing tool to define the borders of her figures with a beautiful\, almost invisible satin-stitch. Roberts-Antieau then finishes her pieces with hand embroidery work\, and frames the finished art behind glass in hand-painted frames. On exhibit in permanent collections across the country\, the joy in Roberts-Antieau’s award winning work is contagious.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ten Thousand Urban and Rural Things: BASEbeijing
DESCRIPTION: The number ten thousand is not an exact number in Chinese. Traditionally\, ten thousand was thought of as such an unimaginably large number that it became the equivalent of infinity. The concept includes everything you can point to or even name -- all of reality.\n\nIt is sometimes translated as \"myriad creatures\" or \"ten thousand beings\,\" but that makes one falsely assume that the concept includes only living creatures. The ten thousand things also includes inanimate objects (such as rocks\, buildings\, stars)\, emptiness (like outer space or vacuums)\, and abstractions (such as dreams\, thoughts\, principles\, beliefs\, language\, the Internet).\n\nThe work done at BASEbeijing since 2006 has been a quest for finding\, experiencing\, collecting and acting upon ten thousand urban and rural things. The things collected and exhibited are a combination of \"real\" things\, forgeries\, duplications and representations. The work in the exhibit involved \"acting upon\" the ten thousand things\, often taking the form of books\, designed objects and structures done while in residence at BASE. While BASE was founded on a commitment to an interest in urban space\, our attention was quickly pulled toward the rural\, and we have come to find a surprising new space that is not one or the other\, but rather a continuity that involves both simultaneously.\n\nBASEbeijing is a collaboration involving students from Taubman College\, the University of Michigan\, and various schools in both the U.S. and China.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Opera and Politics as Bedfellows--OLLI at U-M (50+)
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Richard C. Adelman\, Ph.d. Emeritus Professor of Biological Chemistry\, U-M\n\n\nOpera and politics attract one another. Some composers and producers utilize political events to shape operas. on the other hand\, recollection of some memorable operatic moments enriches political commentary by news and entertainment media in contemporary and future times. each of these scenarios evokes a range of dramatic emotions from humor to tragedy and outrage. This presentation uses selected scenes from Richard Wagner’s “Ring Cycle” and John Adams’s “The Death of Klinghoffer” to provide insight into the ways that politics and opera shape one another and to contemplate specific roles of humor and tragedy within the context of those interactions.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Four Decades
DESCRIPTION:Four Decades\, a new exhibition featuring the work of School of Art & Design Professor Dennis Guastella and Ron Teachworth will present a retrospective selection of each artist’s work from the 1970's to the present.\n\nA public reception honoring the artists will take place in the Gallery on Sunday\, October 13\, from 3-5pm. (Free parking is available on Sundays.)\n\nBoth artists work in a variety of media\, and have an ongoing commitment to non-objective painting. The richly developed surfaces of Dennis Guastella's paintings demonstrate his passion for the physical beauty of paint explored through a variety of application methods ranging from squeeze bottles to thick layers of acrylic paint that are dried on a non-absorbent surface\, removed\, and then cut and collaged onto a final painting panel. \n\nRon Teachworth's abstractions evolved from his early landscape paintings. These interpretations developed into paintings called \"Sky Fields\" where the entire canvas became a unified surface activated by thousands of small brush strokes of color. \n\nTo learn more about the artists visit their web sites below.\n\nDennis Guastella: http://theartofdennisguastella.blogspot.com\n\nRon Teachworth: http://www.ronteachworth.com\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Peter Whiteley Lecture\, \"What's in a Hopi Name?\"
DESCRIPTION:Hopi personal names and place names encode a wealth of cultural information. Personal names are like haikus: compact poetic images of aesthetic forms or natural events. Place names are guideposts of cosmology\, historical consciousness\, and cultural practices. This talk addresses some dimensions of Hopitutungwni\, Hopi names.\n\nDr. Peter Whiteley (Curator\, North American Ethnology - Anthropology\nProfessor\, Richard Gilder Graduate School - Richard Gilder Graduate School) studies Native North American cultures ethnographically and historically. His main focus is the Hopi of northern Arizona\, where he began fieldwork in 1980\, resulting in four books and monographs: Deliberate Acts: Changing Hopi Culture through the Oraibi Split (University of Arizona Press\, 1988)\, Bacavi: Journey to Reed Springs (Northland Press\, 1988)\, Rethinking Hopi Ethnography (Smithsonian Institution Press\, 1998)\, and The Orayvi Split: a Hopi Transformation (Anthropological Papers of the American Museum of Natural History\, 2008). In 2005\, his paper Bartering Pahos with the President\, on a Hopi diplomatic gift\, won the Robert F. Heizer Prize for “best article in the field of ethnohistory.” Current Hopi work includes a collaborative project (funded by the National Science Foundation’s Endangered Languages program) on Hopi place-names and landscape concepts\, with the Hopi Office of Cultural Preservation and colleagues at the University of Arizona.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:An ant colony operates without central control. No ant can assess what needs to be done. Each ant responds to its interactions with other ants nearby. In the aggregate\, these stochastic\, dynamical networks of interaction regulate colony behavior. Ants are extremely diverse\, and species differences in collective behavior reflect relations with diverse environments.\n\nA long-term study of desert seed-eating ants shows that colonies regulate foraging activity according to food availability and current humidity. Colonies differ in how they regulate foraging behavior. Matching parent and offspring colonies made it possible to estimate a life table for this population of colonies and to ask how collective behavior is evolving in current drought conditions. It appears that colonies that regulate foraging so as to conserve water are having more offspring colonies.\n\nStudies of other species\, such as tropical arboreal ants in Mexico\, and the invasive Argentine ant in northern California\, suggest how different collective algorithms evolve in other environmental conditions.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Feminism and the Politics of Welfare
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Premilla Nadasen (History\, Queens College\, CUNY)\n\n“Food stamp fraud” and “welfare cheat” are the buzzwords that dominate the debate about poverty and government assistance today\, as conservative politicians fret over the growing number of poor Americans qualifying for SNAP assistance. The stigmatization and criminalization of recipients of public assistance are not new. \n\nPremilla Nadasen\, author of \"Welfare Warriors\,\" looks back at the emergence of the “welfare queen” stereotype and the vibrant movement for welfare rights in the 1960s and 1970s and asks what we can learn from it about gender\, race\, ideology and the struggle for a decent standard of living.

SUMMARY:Other:Self Esteem and Relationships\; A Relationship Enhancement Series
DESCRIPTION:Thursdays- Relationship Enhancement Series. Dealing with difficult people in your life can be extremely stressful. Unfortunately\, few people ever learn the high-level skills needed to manage difficult relationships. This series will help you do just that.\n\nSelf-Esteem and Relationships. Few things in your life can have a greater positive impact than learning to feel good about you. How we feel about ourselves can impact our relationships with friends\, family\, and significant others. In this workshop you will explore some of the earlier-life experiences that may have formed your current \"core beliefs\" about yourself. We will talk about how these beliefs influence your life\, relationships\, and behaviors currently. Lastly\, you will learn strategies for weakening some of the negative self-beliefs that hold you back in your life.\n\n\n\nEach Thursday from 4:15-5:30 p.m. you and other interested students will meet with a counselor and focus on one of the most frequent concerns of U-M students. These are the very issues that U-M students have told us are the most common issues they deal with every day. The counselor will share some helpful information\, talk about strategies and clinical resources\, and she or he will also make time for you to share a little bit about your concerns (if you wish to do so). \n

SUMMARY:Performance:Mason Jennings
DESCRIPTION:As one grows into adulthood\, remaining steadfastly single-minded about one’s pursuits gets increasingly difficult. The musician becomes a band mate navigating the creative energies of those around them. He becomes a boyfriend\, a husband\, a businessman. She becomes a lover\, a mother\, a practitioner of her art. Life becomes multifarious\, and the pressure to not let the disparate threads of a chaotic life unravel can cause strain on any relationship. With his new album Minnesota\, Mason Jennings crafts a collage of love trying to survive the transition into being a grown-up in a complex world.\n“Love is the most important thing to me\, my relationship with my wife and kids\,” Mason says\, adding “And music has always been as important as breathing to me. I have come to realize that to have it all\, I have to take the long view when it comes to integrating all these parts of my life.” Increasingly\, a sense of place and community has become important to him as well. “The album is called Minnesota because it’s a metaphor for an ever-changing landscape. More than any place I’ve ever been\, things change so much here\, even month-to-month. But even as things change\, Minnesota is where my home is\, where my center is.” His profession often takes him away from that center. Being on the road and finding the personal space to create while at home has caused him to examine how he balances his loves. He generally writes from an intensely personal point of view\, but Minnesota represents a step toward the light after the darkness of Blood of Man\, his last album.\nA case in point is the first song on the album\, “Bitter Heart\,” which manages to be simultaneously plaintive and hopeful. The protagonist recognizes the breach of faith and the sense of estrangement in the relationship\, but sings tenderly of rapprochement. To Mason\, the central line in this song and a central point to the \n\nalbum is “Our world is filled with only what we see/Can we see love now.” Mason says\, “I have come to the understanding that the way that we feel inside is the most important thing\, and that we have a say in that.”\nMason often encounters couples after his shows who tell him his music played a major role when they were falling in love. “Raindrops On The Kitchen Floor” is an unadulterated love song\, with that love being so visceral that it can seemingly transcend the possible (“How am I gonna live forever/Promise me you will/Call it off\, the age of reason/There’s no more time to kill”). “I guess this is music to stay in love to\,” he jokes.\nBut this collage is far from monochromatic. “Clutch” looks back wistfully at a love before the demands of adulthood came knocking. At the end of the song\, Mason sings that “Maybe we could work it out\, we could live in a dream\, live in a dream\,” as though he knows it’s too late to re-enter the honeymoon phase of the relationship. The song ends in a dream-like instrumental break that leads directly into “Witches’ Dream\,” a fabulist romp that juxtaposes raw lust with fairy tale imagery. He stays in this dream state with “Rudy\,” an allegory in which a good man overcomes the forces of darkness\, while “Wake Up” addresses the need to put self-inflicted darkness behind one as well.\nMusically\, Mason paints from a more varied palette than ever. For instance\, piano is featured more prominently than any of his previous albums. “The piano seemed to fit the emotional core of the album\,” he explains. “I felt that it was important to begin and end the album with piano.” Mason played almost all of the instruments on the album\, the one exception being “Well Of Love\,” a Perez Prado-esque number that features his friends in The Living Room\, the side project of Jack Johnson drummer/percussionist Adam Topol. Friend Jason Schwartzman adds additional piano and background vocals on “Raindrops.”\nMinnesota finds Mason Jennings more at home than ever: More at home in his adopted state and more at home with the integration of the self that is required to live an artistic life while enjoying the community of his friends and loved ones.
