Currently the Kunlun National Park is being developed in partnership with Yellowstone National Park in an effort to preserve the natural wonders and the wildlife of the Kunlun Mountains. Traditionally, ten thousand was thought of as such an unimaginably large number that it became the equivalent of infinity. The concept includes everything you can point to or even name -- all of reality.\r\n\r\nIt is sometimes translated as \"myriad creatures\" or \"ten thousand beings,\" but that makes one falsely assume that the concept includes only living creatures. The ten thousand things also includes inanimate objects (such as rocks, buildings, stars), emptiness (like outer space or vacuums), and abstractions (such as dreams, thoughts, principles, beliefs, language, the Internet).\r\n\r\nThe work done at BASEbeijing since 2006 has been a quest for finding, experiencing, collecting and acting upon ten thousand urban and rural things. No ant can assess what needs to be done. Each ant responds to its interactions with other ants nearby. In the aggregate, these stochastic, dynamical networks of interaction regulate colony behavior. Ants are extremely diverse, and species differences in collective behavior reflect relations with diverse environments.\r\n\r\nA long-term study of desert seed-eating ants shows that colonies regulate foraging activity according to food availability and current humidity. Colonies differ in how they regulate foraging behavior. Matching parent and offspring colonies made it possible to estimate a life table for this population of colonies and to ask how collective behavior is evolving in current drought conditions. With his new album Minnesota, Mason Jennings crafts a collage of love trying to survive the transition into being a grown-up in a complex world.\r\n\u201cLove is the most important thing to me, my relationship with my wife and kids,\u201d\u009d Mason says, adding \u201cAnd music has always been as important as breathing to me. I have come to realize that to have it all, I have to take the long view when it comes to integrating all these parts of my life.\u201d\u009d Increasingly, a sense of place and community has become important to him as well. \u201cThe album is called Minnesota because it\u2019s a metaphor for an ever-changing landscape. More than any place I\u2019ve ever been, things change so much here, even month-to-month. But even as things change, Minnesota is where my home is, where my center is.\u201d\u009d His profession often takes him away from that center. Being on the road and finding the personal space to create while at home has caused him to examine how he balances his loves. He generally writes from an intensely personal point of view, but Minnesota represents a step toward the light after the darkness of Blood of Man, his last album.\r\nA case in point is the first song on the album, \u201cBitter Heart,\u201d\u009d which manages to be simultaneously plaintive and hopeful. The protagonist recognizes the breach of faith and the sense of estrangement in the relationship, but sings tenderly of rapprochement. To Mason, the central line in this song and a central point to the \r\n\r\nalbum is \u201cOur world is filled with only what we see\/Can we see love now.\u201d\u009d Mason says, \u201cI have come to the understanding that the way that we feel inside is the most important thing, and that we have a say in that.\u201d\u009d\r\nMason often encounters couples after his shows who tell him his music played a major role when they were falling in love. \u201cRaindrops On The Kitchen Floor\u201d\u009d is an unadulterated love song, with that love being so visceral that it can seemingly transcend the possible (\u201cHow am I gonna live forever\/Promise me you will\/Call it off, the age of reason\/There\u2019s no more time to kill\u201d\u009d). \u201cI guess this is music to stay in love to,\u201d\u009d he jokes.\r\nBut this collage is far from monochromatic. \u201cClutch\u201d\u009d looks back wistfully at a love before the demands of adulthood came knocking. At the end of the song, Mason sings that \u201cMaybe we could work it out, we could live in a dream, live in a dream,\u201d\u009d as though he knows it\u2019s too late to re-enter the honeymoon phase of the relationship. The song ends in a dream-like instrumental break that leads directly into \u201cWitches\u2019 Dream,\u201d\u009d a fabulist romp that juxtaposes raw lust with fairy tale imagery. He stays in this dream state with \u201cRudy,\u201d\u009d an allegory in which a good man overcomes the forces of darkness, while \u201cWake Up\u201d\u009d addresses the need to put self-inflicted darkness behind one as well.\r\nMusically, Mason paints from a more varied palette than ever. For instance, piano is featured more prominently than any of his previous albums. \u201cThe piano seemed to fit the emotional core of the album,\u201d\u009d he explains. \u201cI felt that it was important to begin and end the album with piano.\u201d\u009d Mason played almost all of the instruments on the album, the one exception being \u201cWell Of Love,\u201d\u009d a Perez Prado-esque number that features his friends in The Living Room, the side project of Jack Johnson drummer\/percussionist Adam Topol.
