SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Pierced Porcelain
DESCRIPTION:In this current body of work\, Kate Tremel is interested in taking a fresh look at traditional pottery forms within a functional context. She has returned to a technique that she learned years ago as an exchange student in Peru - thinning and shaping porcelain using a wooden paddle and river stone. Tremel finds the challenge of piercing the thin walls of the clay at their most fragile state to be an exercise in understanding the fleeting tenuousness of beauty itself. Among other things\, Tremel is a lecturer at the U-M Penny W. Stamps School of Art and Design.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Stitched Impressions: Art Quilts
DESCRIPTION:Textile artist Carole Harris is a Detroit native. Her mother introduced her to needle arts at an early age. After receiving a BFA in art and interior design from Wayne State\, she began to explore fibers as an art form. Many of her art quilts have architectural themes but she is most fascinated by the interplay of hue and pattern\, often drawing inspiration from the color\, energy\, movement\, and rhythms of ethnographic rituals as well as jazz\, blues and gospel music. Harris’ goal is to make her quilts dance with the same excitement\, exuberance and joy that music gives her. Her work has been exhibited in museums and galleries nationally and internationally\, and she is much in demand as a lecturer and juror.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents The Art of Storytelling: Fabric Appliqué
DESCRIPTION:Chris Roberts-Antieau’s work is about the mysterious origin of joy and the wonder of childhood. To create her witty fabric paintings\, she first hunts for her palette of fabrics: linens\, flannels\, cottons\, calicos\, even velvet. Then she cuts her designs freehand\, using the sewing machine as a drawing tool to define the borders of her figures with a beautiful\, almost invisible satin-stitch. Roberts-Antieau then finishes her pieces with hand embroidery work\, and frames the finished art behind glass in hand-painted frames. On exhibit in permanent collections across the country\, the joy in Roberts-Antieau’s award winning work is contagious.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Ten Thousand Urban and Rural Things: BASEbeijing
DESCRIPTION: The number ten thousand is not an exact number in Chinese. Traditionally\, ten thousand was thought of as such an unimaginably large number that it became the equivalent of infinity. The concept includes everything you can point to or even name -- all of reality.\n\nIt is sometimes translated as \"myriad creatures\" or \"ten thousand beings\,\" but that makes one falsely assume that the concept includes only living creatures. The ten thousand things also includes inanimate objects (such as rocks\, buildings\, stars)\, emptiness (like outer space or vacuums)\, and abstractions (such as dreams\, thoughts\, principles\, beliefs\, language\, the Internet).\n\nThe work done at BASEbeijing since 2006 has been a quest for finding\, experiencing\, collecting and acting upon ten thousand urban and rural things. The things collected and exhibited are a combination of \"real\" things\, forgeries\, duplications and representations. The work in the exhibit involved \"acting upon\" the ten thousand things\, often taking the form of books\, designed objects and structures done while in residence at BASE. While BASE was founded on a commitment to an interest in urban space\, our attention was quickly pulled toward the rural\, and we have come to find a surprising new space that is not one or the other\, but rather a continuity that involves both simultaneously.\n\nBASEbeijing is a collaboration involving students from Taubman College\, the University of Michigan\, and various schools in both the U.S. and China.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the closing keynote address of Open Access Week. Mike Buschman\, co-founder of Plum Analytics\, reflects on two years of experience collecting\, analyzing\, and visualizing alternative metrics that measure academic research\, showing how alternative metrics are being used today by research institutions as diverse at the University of Pittsburgh and the Smithsonian\, scholarly publishers\, and individual researchers.\n\nWhile citation counts have long been the tried-and-true measure of academic research usage and impact\, metrics can now be harvested and applied to research around usage\, captures\, mentions\, and social media\, in addition to citations\, giving a much more comprehensive and holistic view of impact.\n\nLight refreshments will be served.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:ADHD Awareness Week Event
DESCRIPTION:Thomas Fluent\, MD.\, is a Clinical Assistant Professor and serves as Medical Director for Ambulatory Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Hospital and Health Systems. He has evaluated and treated child\, adolescent and adult patients and families with ADHD across multiple settings for over 20 years. He has 25 years of combined active and reserve military duty in the US Navy.\n \n\nDr. Fluent treated patients and families struggling with the impact of ADHD on their lives for many years prior to adopting his son in 1997. As a child psychiatrist and father to a happy little girl\, he was confident at the time that he possessed the requisite skill and understanding of the disorder to effectively help patients and parents navigate the challenges ADHD often presents on family relationships and individual social and academic development. \nAs his son entered school and began to struggle\, Dr. Fluent quickly discovered that many of his assumptions and perceptions about the disorder\, the patients themselves\, and the parents caring for them were ill-informed and woefully lacking in appreciation of the profound impact of the disorder on the life of the child and the family. In this presentation he shares his humbling journey with his now college student son\, some lessons learned in the process and the impact this has had on his approach and care for these patients and families.\n	Come to gain and share insights about how families meet the challenges of ADHD. Questions and answers and refreshments follow the presentation.	\nFor more information\, contact Geraldine Markel\, Ph.D.\, at geri@managingyourmind.com\n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Four Decades
DESCRIPTION:Four Decades\, a new exhibition featuring the work of School of Art & Design Professor Dennis Guastella and Ron Teachworth will present a retrospective selection of each artist’s work from the 1970's to the present.\n\nA public reception honoring the artists will take place in the Gallery on Sunday\, October 13\, from 3-5pm. (Free parking is available on Sundays.)\n\nBoth artists work in a variety of media\, and have an ongoing commitment to non-objective painting. The richly developed surfaces of Dennis Guastella's paintings demonstrate his passion for the physical beauty of paint explored through a variety of application methods ranging from squeeze bottles to thick layers of acrylic paint that are dried on a non-absorbent surface\, removed\, and then cut and collaged onto a final painting panel. \n\nRon Teachworth's abstractions evolved from his early landscape paintings. These interpretations developed into paintings called \"Sky Fields\" where the entire canvas became a unified surface activated by thousands of small brush strokes of color. \n\nTo learn more about the artists visit their web sites below.\n\nDennis Guastella: http://theartofdennisguastella.blogspot.com\n\nRon Teachworth: http://www.ronteachworth.com\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Sibande On Campus: Exhibit: prints
DESCRIPTION:Rising young South African artist Mary Sibande constructs elaborate visual narratives to consider race\, gender\, and class in post-colonial South Africa. Rooted in her own family’s history of three generations of women as domestic servants\, Sibande’s larger-than-life figures clothed in yards of fabric confront the viewer with the stark limits of cultural heritage as well as the possibility of transformation. Sibande’s Ann Arbor fellowship includes an original installation at the U-M Institute for the Humanities gallery\, a Penny Stamps lecture\, an open studio at the Stamps School on North Campus\, and exhibition of Sibande’s existing work at Gallery DAAS\, the U-M Museum of Art\, and the Stamps School Slusser Gallery.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSAS Scholarly Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Jeffrey Witsoe\, Assistant Professor\, Department of Anthropology\, Union College\n\nBihar\, a north Indian state of over a hundred million people\, is India’s poorest state known for caste conflict\, political violence\, and a Maoist insurgency. At the same time\, since the early 1990s a dramatic upsurge of lower caste politics swept Bihar and other parts of north India. Drawing from ethnographic fieldwork conducted since 2002\, this talk examines why caste remains the most important political identity in Bihar and what this reveals about the dynamics of India’s democracy.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Nam Center Colloquium Series: \"Everlasting Fraternal Friendship: North Korea and the End of Communism\"
DESCRIPTION:In May 1984\, North Korean leader Kim Il Sung took an extensive official tour of the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe\, reaffirming North Korea’s ties to the Soviet bloc and the “friendship” among socialist states. Within a few years\, the Berlin Wall had fallen and the Soviet Union had collapsed. Yet despite its economic dependence on the Eastern bloc\, North Korea survived the collapse of communist regimes in Europe and Mongolia. Information from the archives of North Korea’s former communist partners enables us to understand Pyongyang’s complex relationship to the socialist bloc\, the ambiguous end of communism in 1989 – 91\, and the reasons for North Korea’s continued existence.\n \nOur guest lecturer\, Charles Armstrong\, is the Korea Foundation Professor of Korean Studies in the Social Sciences\, Department of History at Colombia University. His new book\, “Tyranny of the Weak: North Korea and the World\, 1950-1990” (Cornell University Press)\, has just been published and his Modern East Asia volume for the Wiley-Blackwell series \"Concise History of the Modern World\" is forthcoming in 2014\, adding to his already significant body of research on Asia. His next research project is concerned with trans-Pacific Cold War culture and U.S.-East Asian relations. He is a frequent commentator in the U.S. and foreign mass media on contemporary Korean\, East Asian\, and Asian-American affairs. Professor Armstrong received his BA from Yale\, MA from the London School of Economics\, and PhD from the University of Chicago.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sarah Dunn
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 2000 by Sarah Dunn and Martin Felsen as a research-based architecture and urban design practice\, UrbanLab theorizes that infrastructure can be hybridized\, thereby leveraging a technically oriented project into one with cultural qualities. It presumes that possibilities for design innovation arise out of the investigation of the various constraints of combining infrastructural and ecological systems with cultural desires. Advancing ideas of infrastructural and ecological urbanism\, UrbanLab proposes a hybridization of landscape\, city\, infrastructure and ecology that attempts to address the issue of contemporary public space and urban architecture. Through different scales and kinds of urban sites\, UrbanLab’s projects develop the means or techniques of this hybridization. UrbanLab won the American Institute of Architects College of Fellows 2009 Latrobe Prize\, the History Channel’s City of the Future competition\, and several AIA Design Awards for built and unbuilt work. UrbanLab’s design work was exhibited in the 2012 Venice Architecture Biennale and has been published in AD\, Architectural Record\, Architect Magazine\, 306090\, Places\, the Architect’s Newspaper\, Dwell\, and the New York Times.\n\nSarah Dunn is an Associate Professor in the School of Architecture in the College of Architecture and the Arts at the University of Illinois at Chicago.

SUMMARY:Film Screening:CJS Film Series - Sanrizuka–Peasants of the Second Fortress
DESCRIPTION:Directed by Shinsuke Ogawa | 143min | 16mm\n-Includes a Q&A session with Toshio Iizuka\, Ogawa’s assistant director\n\nPeasants of the Second Fortress was Ogawa’s first international success\, as prints were swapped with collectives in America and Europe. The violence had escalated in Sanrizuka and farmers turned to a new tactic: they built large fortresses\, and burrowed underground – under their ground. Ogawa follows the course of the protests\, as police invade one after the other. Between the action scenes Ogawa pauses to chat with farmers\, both above and below ground. One palpably senses the strong relationship the collective had nurtured with the farmers\, and the deep respect with which Ogawa approached his subjects.

SUMMARY:Performance:Hurray for the Riff Raff Spirit Family Reunion
DESCRIPTION:Spirit Family Reunion play homegrown American music to stomp\, clap\, shake and holler with. Ever since they started singing together on the street corners\, farmers' markets\, and subway stations of New York City\, strangers and neighbors come to rejoice in the sound\, and there is no divide between performer and spectator. Paste describes their sound this way: \"Dusty acoustic guitars\, wailing fiddles and weeping accordions\, with a woozy-yet-skintight rhythm section-- and topped off with burr-edged vocals that sound like they've been soaked in a Mason jar for generations–it's the type of music that blurs the line between past and present so thoroughly\, and so deftly\, that time feels irrelevant.\"\n\nHurray for the Riff Raff is Alynda lee Segarra\, a 25 year old Puerto Rican from the Bronx. After leaving home at an early age to travel the country\, she eventually settled in New Orleans where she began to perform and record with a revolving cast of musicians. Alynda and her longtime gunslinger on fiddle\, Yosi Perlstein\, met up with a young honky-tonk band called the Tumbleweeds\, just as Alynda began to expand her musical palette to include country\, rock 'n' roll\, pop\, and soul. In the tradition of Bob Dylan with Band and Neil Young with Crazy Horse\, Alynda and Yosi recruited the Tumbleweeds to be their touring band\, drastically altering the sound of Hurray for the Riff Raff. From the swamp pop of “Little Black Star” to the classic country of “Look Out Mama\,” to the psychedelia of “Ode to John and Yoko” and even the surf rock of “Lake of Fire\,\" Hurray for the Riff Raff covers a wide array of musical ground\, with every song unified by Alynda’s soulful vocals and expert songwriting.\n\nThe Deslondes will open the show before joining Hurray for the Riff Raff on stage.
