Their story begins in the western borderlands in interwar Eastern Europe. Border shifts as a result of World War II brought these largely Ukrainian and Romanian believers onto Soviet soil. Now Soviet citizens, they not only survived decades of state persecution, but maintained their religious beliefs, communities, and way of life, and even found converts. Their journey suggests the need to broaden historical conceptions of dissent beyond the well-known urban, intellectual dissidents of the late Soviet era. The Witnesses, a rural, religious community, provide an ideal vehicle to do so because they ran one of the largest and most complex underground organizations in the postwar USSR. Their apocalyptic beliefs, door-to-door preaching, and rejection of secular society compelled them not to conform to even the most basic cultural and political norms of Soviet life. This lecture will explore the ways in which religion provided a powerful structure for ordinary, often rural citizens to form complex alternative communities that pushed the boundaries of control established by the Soviet state.\r\n\r\nEmily B. Baran is assistant professor in the Department of History at Middle Tennessee State University. Her research explores the shifting contours of state control, human rights, and religious freedom in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet states. Her first monograph, Dissent on the Margins: How Soviet Jehovah\u2019s Witnesses Defied Communism and Lived to Preach about It, will be published by Oxford University Press in April 2014. Her articles have appeared in Cahiers du Monde russe, Journal of Church and State, Russian Review, and Religion, State and Society. She is currently working on a second monograph, tentatively titled, Communism or Armageddon: Forging an Atheist State in Postwar Ukraine, which will examine the Soviet Union\u2019s efforts to construct a cohesive sociopolitical order in its newly annexed western borderlands after World War II. Two Armenians from Aintab, Krikor Bogharian and Der Nerses Tavukjian, were among tens of thousands of exiles who spent more than three years in the Syrian towns of Hama and Salamiya. Both of them kept diaries which report the level of day-to-day existence, the gradual impoverishment that deprived an exiled family of basic nourishment, as well as the mutual assistance relatives gave each other, but also the limits of such assistance. The two diarists recount the deaths of loved ones and the coerced religious conversions or other moral compromises to which people resorted in order to survive. In this talk, Vah\u00e9 Tachjian uses these two diaries to narrate the quotidian world of deportees\u2013ordinary lives caught in an extraordinary historical moment. Tachjian will attempt to describe and analyze the initial experiences of the two diarists at the end of the war and their liberation, as well as the general mood prevailing at that time in the Armenian community. Beyond the ongoing efforts to regroup the Armenian survivors after the Catastrophe and to reconstruct the nation, there was also a debate among the Armenians concerning the collective responsibility of the Turks or the question of their collective guilt. What was to be remembered and what was to be forgotten? Was it possible to co-exist with the Turks?\r\n\r\nBorn in Lebanon, Vah\u00e9 Tachjian earned his Ph.D. in History and Civilization at the \u00c3\u2030cole des Hautes \u00c3\u2030tudes en Sciences Sociales (EHESS) in Paris. He is now the chief editor of the houshamdyan website (based in Berlin), a scientific project that aims to reconstruct the Ottoman Armenians\u2019 local history and the memory of their lives. He is also a principal advisor to the University administration and to the state government on the economic situation in Michigan.\r\n\r\nAbout the Presentation:\r\nWhat factors contribute to the well-being of U.S. metropolitan area economies, and why have some areas been more successful in re-making their economies than others? Can lessons learned from these more successful metropolitan areas help guide longer-term economic development policies in Michigan and elsewhere\u2013or not?\r\n\r\nAbstract:\r\nWith a unique approach and expanded data measures, this study attempts to extend the analysis to date of what leads metro economies in the United States to function the way they do, what makes some of the economies more successful than others, and what policy handles, if any, can improve their profiles. The primary tool for analysis is regression, and two measures, income and employment, are used to represent economic success. Two dimensions of analysis are considered: time and space (geography). For time, we investigate the hypothesis that behavioral relationships can vary in a meaningful way depending on the time period selected for analysis, while other relationships remain robust over time. For space, we compare results for metro areas in the \u201crust belt\u201d\u009d region of the country with those for metro areas collectively in the nation. To address the constraints, or \u201ctyranny,\u201d\u009d of best practices, we carry out an analysis of residuals to gain insight into which metro areas least conformed to the fit of the general model, and why. The results suggest that findings can be quite sensitive to the time period selected, but also that there are structural and policy-related drivers that are more robust to different time periods and geographies. Among the strongest indicators of the well-being of a metro area are the initial conditions in the metro area, the industry structure, the innovative environment, crime, and educational attainment.
