SUMMARY:Exhibition:4\,000 Years for Choice
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Depression on College Campuses Conference
DESCRIPTION:How do colleges and universities define “success” for their students? While GPA is a traditional benchmark of student success\, there are other outcomes which may be more important for long-term student wellbeing. Research shows that symptoms of depression predict retention and graduation rates\, and mentally healthy students are better learners – so it follows that supporting student mental health benefits the entire campus.\n\nJoin us for the 12th Annual Depression on College Campuses Conference to learn about new research findings and model programs which demonstrate how a focus on improving student mental health can benefit student success in all areas of the college experience – emotionally\, physically\, socially\, and academically – and allow students to achieve their full potential.\n\nThe conference will feature a choice of intensive three-hour workshops in addition to keynote presentations\, panel discussions\, and concurrent sessions. The conference will run from 12:30-6:00 on March 12\, and from 8:30-4:00 on March 13.\n\nQuestions? Please contact Trish Meyer\, Depression Center Program Director for Outreach & Education\, at meyerpa@umich.edu\, or (734) 763-7495.\n\nDepression on College Campuses is presented by the U-M Depression Center\, in partnership with schools and colleges of the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: Plainly Spoken
DESCRIPTION:View a range of binding ideas that came to fruition: models that replicate books from a historical period\, cut-aways that visually reveal their hidden structure\, design bindings that interpret a concept from the text\, and artists’ bindings that play with structures and materials to create something new.\n\nIn this traveling exhibit the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers showcases archivist and book conservator Julia Miller’s text Books Will Speak Plain. Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series: The Re-Branding of Himiko
DESCRIPTION:Abstract\n\nThis presentation explores a popular female icon\, the alleged third century ruler of Yamatai named Himiko\, focusing on her representations as shamanic priestess\, alluring ruler and dangerous witch in contemporary culture. She morphs from ancient dictator in manga to ditzy gyaru in anime. Himiko provides rich material for regional boosterism as mascot\, beauty contest theme\, and touristic motif. She appears in tarot card decks and is channeled by divination providers. I trace how the hazy yet tantalizing aspects of her story make her such an appealing and malleable icon available to serve a range of interests.\n\nSpeaker Bio\n\nLaura Miller is Ei’ichi Shibusawa-Seigo Arai Professor of Japanese Studies and Professor of Anthropology at the University of Missouri-St. Louis. She has published widely on Japanese culture and language. She teaches courses on Japan and linguistic anthropology and works to promote Japan Studies through campus and community programming.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Research Through Making
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, research and creative practice have been constructed as \"opposites.\" This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools\, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an \"applied art.\" Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases\, design can be a purely problem solving activity\, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.\n\nIn its fifth year\, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research\, worked on by faculty\, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.\nThis year's projects:\n\n\"City of Nights: Detroit Illuminated\": Karl Daubmann\, Osman Kahn (UM Art and Design) and Catie Newell\n\"PneuSystems\": Kathy Velikov\, Geoffrey Thun\, and Santinder Singh Baveja (UM College of Engineering)\n\"Displace\": Wes McGee\, Catie Newell\, and Brandon Weiner (UM library)\n\"Carbon Fiber Architecture\": Glenn Wilcox and Anca Trandafirescu\n\"Knit Architectures\": Sean Ahlquist\, Wes McGee\, Anthony Waas (UM Engineering)\, and Georg Essl (UM Engineering)\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION: Development projects the world over run into one crucial point: For a project to live on\, it needs to be organic\, owned and sustained by those it serves. In 1972\, Sanjit “Bunker” Roy founded the Barefoot College\, in the village of Tilonia in Rajasthan\, India\, with just this mission: to provide basic services and solutions in rural communities with the objective of making them self-sufficient. These “barefoot solutions” can be broadly categorized into solar energy\, water\, education\, health care\, rural handicrafts\, people’s action\, communication\, women’s empowerment and wasteland development. The Barefoot College education program\, for instance\, teaches literacy and also skills\, encouraging learning-by-doing. (Literacy is only part of it.) Bunker’s organization has also successfully trained grandmothers from Africa and the Himalayan region to be solar engineers so they can bring electricity to their remote villages.\n\nAs he says\, Barefoot College is \"a place of learning and unlearning: where the teacher is the learner and the learner is the teacher.\"

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:SNRE 2014 Whittemore Lecture
DESCRIPTION:William J. Johnson: Fellow of the American Society of Landscape Architects\n\nOften on my mind are Landscape Architect Professionals-to-be”¦emerging professionals gearing up for intriguing careers\, facing some of the most important sets of issues in the 21st Century – how to understand\, protect\, and restore sustaining natural systems while accommodating overlapping human development aspirations. Finding a responsible FIT between the two is a complex\, formidable and worthy challenge.\n\nLandscape Architecture is a DESIGN Profession focused on that search for fit in partnership with several sister design professions\, key science disciplines among many others. The nature of the practice is marked by interdisciplinary exchanges and collaborative teamwork. I have come to know Design as a continuum\; interconnecting strategy\, process and form towards responsible and inspirational completed works. There have been many lessons learned along the way during some disappointing shortfalls along with some remarkable successes.\n\nAccordingly\, I want to highlight some Key Design Insights and Precepts that I believe are central to a sound professional practice. In concert with my brother Carl and Clarence Roy\, these precepts became clear early in our careers - during undergraduate\, graduate work and within the first few years of practice. These precepts formed much of the basis for my 30 years of teaching at Michigan begun in 1958 as well as the joint founding of Johnson\, Johnson and Roy as a parallel professional practice in 1963. There are 7 precepts all centered on PLACE DESIGN ”¦ Design as uniquely approached by designers of the land in a breadth of scope consistent with the magnitude of the challenge. I trust their descriptions will be both interesting and helpful.\n\nReception with light refreshments to immediately follow the lecture in the Ford Commons. All are welcome.

SUMMARY:Performance:Kim Richey
DESCRIPTION:The musical journey that has led Kim Richey to her latest album\, \"Thorn in My Heart\,\" has been a dream run. Kim has released a series critically acclaimed albums and has written two number-one and four top-ten hits. She has had her songs recorded by the likes of Trisha Yearwood\, and sung on albums by Ryan Adams\, Shawn Colvin\, and Mary Chapin Carpenter. Her songs are beautifully crafted\, irresistibly melodic\, and often deep. Kim comes to Michigan with a new release\, \"Thorn in My Heart\,\" that's another masterpiece of smart\, sensual understatement. The album attracted an array of top-tier guests who have felt Richey's influence including Jason Isbell\, Wilco’s Pat Sansone\, My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel\, Will Kimbrough\, and Trisha Yearwood. And the dozen songs themselves show that Richey’s still dreaming up fetching melodies that arc and bend in unexpected ways\, and still discovering fresh angles from which to articulate matters of the heart.\n
