He will show experimental results to demonstrate how these building blocks jointly enable the first scalable, numerically stable tri-diagonal solver that matches the numerical stability of the Intel Math Kernel Library (MKL) and surpass the performance of CUSPARSE. \r\nHe will then give an overview of the Tangram and Triolet projects that are aimed to drastically improve the quality and reduce the development and maintenance cost future many-core algorithms.\r\n\r\nBio: Wen-mei W. Hwu is a Professor and holds the Sanders-AMD Endowed Chair in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His research interests are in the area of architecture, implementation, compilation, and algorithms for parallel computing. He is the chief scientist of Parallel Computing Institute and director of the IMPACT research group (www.impact.crhc.illinois.edu). He is a co-founder and CTO of MulticoreWare. For his contributions in research and teaching, he received the ACM SigArch Maurice Wilkes Award, the ACM Grace Murray Hopper Award, the Tau Beta Pi Daniel C. Drucker Eminent Faculty Award, the ISCA Influential Paper Award, and the Distinguished Alumni Award in Computer Science of the University of California, Berkeley. He is a fellow of IEEE and ACM. He directs the UIUC CUDA Center of Excellence and serves as one of the principal investigators of the $208M NSF Blue Waters Petascale computer project. June Thomas and Margaret Dewar will moderate the discussion. They are professors of Urban & Regional Planning at the University of Michigan's Taubman College and co-editors of The City After Abandonment.\r\n\r\n \r\nAbout the presenters:\r\n\r\nIan Beniston is the Deputy Director of the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation (YNDC) in Youngstown, Ohio and is responsible for its day to day operations. His duties include financial and staff management, program and resource development, communication strategies, and development of partnerships among diverse stakeholders. In the past three years, Ian has raised over eight million dollars in public and private resources for neighborhood development. He holds a Master of City and Regional Planning from The Ohio State University and a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from Youngstown State University. He is a member of the American Institute of Certified Planners. Ian resides in Youngstown with his wife and two Irish Wolfhounds. Her research concerns what cities become following abandonment, a major transformation affecting many cities in the United States but one in which urban planners usually have little role. She has written several articles that identify political relationships, institutions, laws, and other factors that make a difference in outcomes following abandonment under the same market conditions. She is co-editor with June Manning Thomas of The City After Abandonment (Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press, 2013). \r\n\r\nJune Manning Thomas, PhD, FAICP, is Centennial Professor of Urban and Regional Planning, Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning, at the University of Michigan, with a joint appointment in Residential College. Her books include Redevelopment and Race: Planning a Finer City in Postwar Detroit, the co-edited Urban Planning and the African American Community, and Planning Progress: Lessons from Shoghi Effendi, as well as several other books, journal articles, and book chapters.\r\n\r\nHunter Morrison Hunter Morrison is the Director of the Northeast Ohio Sustainable Communities Consortium Initiative (NOSCC). Before acting as Director of the NEOSCC, Hunter worked as the Director of the Center for Urban and Regional Studies at Youngstown State University. The Center was established for the purpose of understanding applied research addressing issues of urban and regional development and providing technical assistance to local government, social service organizations, and businesses.\r\nPrior to this he was Director of the Cleveland City Planning Commission and was responsible for Civic Vision 2000, a $3 million initiative that resulted in the comprehensive updating of the City\u2019s Downtown Plan, Citywide Plan, and Zoning Code. Civic Vision received the 1992 American Planning Association National Planning Award for Comprehensive Planning. Under his direction, the department was responsible for the development of master plans for North Coast Harbor District, site of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the Cleveland Browns Stadium; the Playhouse Square Theatre District, site of the country\u2019s second largest performing arts center; and the Gateway Sports District, home of Jacobs Field and Gund Area. The Gateway project was awarded an Urban Design Citation from Progressive Architecture in 1990, an Honor Award for urban design from the American Society of Landscape Architects in 1991, and the AIA Urban Design Award in 1996. Prior to joining the City of Cleveland in 1980, he worked for the Hough Area Development Corporation, a neighborhood development organization in Cleveland; for private consulting firms in Boston, and for the cities of Nairobi and New York.\r\n\r\nHunter has taught at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and at Cleveland State University\u2019s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Affairs. Hunter holds degrees in city planning and political science from Yale College, city planning from the Harvard Graduate School of Design, and business administration from Cleveland State University.\r\n\r\n\r\nJohn Russo is a Visiting Research Fellow at Virginia Tech University\u2019s Metropolitan Institute (Arlington) and the former co-director of the Center for Working-Class Studies and coordinator of the Labor Studies Program at Williamson College of Business Administration at Youngstown State University. He has published widely on labor and social issues. In recent years, he has published three books with Sherry Linkon, Steeltown USA: Work and Memory in Youngstown (8th printing, University Press of Kansas, 2002), Reading Work: An Online Resource on Critical Reading and the Meaning of Work (2011), and an edited volume entitled New Working-Class Studies (ILR Press, 2005). He is currently working on a book critical of Smart Shrinkage (?), Urban Redevelopment and the Entreprenuerial City.\r\nSince 2008, Russo has done over 250 interviews with journalists from around the world on issues relating to economic, organized labor, working-class voters, deindustrialization, econmic redevelopment and changes in the nature of work. This great achievement of Korea can be attributed to several factors. In the aftermath of the war, a market economy and a democratic political system were put in place. With respect to economic policy, successful industrialization in the 1970s and 1980s was followed by a timely opening up of the economy around 1990. Also, the year 1987 was the turning point in history when Korean democracy began to be established in earnest, unlocking its potential for a civil and innovative society. These institutions, combined with a people driven by norms that highly valued education and a strong work ethic, led to a miraculous economic achievement. Six years\u2019 continued prosperity and success, however, breeds seeds of failure. The economy is slowing down, social cleavages are widening, the public sector is becoming bigger but more inefficient, and entrenched interest groups are blocking reforms in many areas. South Korea could enter a period of sustained stagnation similar to what Japan has experienced in the last two decades. Yet, internal and external challenges facing Korea in the next fifteen years are daunting. Why fifteen years? First, around 2027, 20% of the Korean population is expected to be age 65 or older. Second, Chinese economic power is likely to be on par with the U.S. around 2017. Currently Korea is highly dependent on Chinese economy but relying on the security alliance with the United States. On top of these challenges, the future of North Korea is highly uncertain. What should South Korea do now to meet these triple challenges lying ahead in the next fifteen years?\r\n\r\nJUNG Ku-Hyun has taught at Yonsei University\u2019s School of Business from 1978 to 2002 and served as Director of the Institute of East and West Studies and the Dean of the Graduate School of Business Administration at the same university. In 2003, he moved to Samsung Group to serve as the President and CEO of Samsung Economic Research Institute and has contributed to the upgrading and internationalization of the Institute. Renne is a professor in the Department of Anthropology and the Center for Afroamerican and African Studies, University of Michigan-Ann Arbor. Her research in Nigeria reflects her continuing interest in issues relating to medical\/demographic anthropology, gender relations, religion, and textiles. Her earlier monographs include Cloth That Does Not Die (University of Washington Press, 1995) and Population and Progress in a Yoruba Town (University of Edinburgh Press\/University of Michigan Press, 2003). She is also the co-editor of the volumes, Regulating Menstruation: Beliefs, Practices, Interpretations (with E. van de Walle; 2001); Population and Development Issues (with J.A. Ebigbola; 2001); and Yoruba Religious Textiles: Essays in Honour of Cornelius Oyeleke Adepegba (with B. Agbaje-Williams, 2005). During the summer 2005, she received a Fulbright Senior Fellowship to work with Dr. Salihu Maiwada, Ahmadu Bello University, on the project, New Technologies of Machine-Embroidered Robe Production and Changing Gender Roles in Zaria, Nigeria. She is also continuing research, begun as a 2005-2006 fellow in the Michigan Institute of the Humanities, which considers gender authority and spiritual ties maintained through white garments used by members of Cherubim & Seraphim churches in Nigeria and the United States with Dr Olufunke Okome. Renne\u2019s on-going work includes a study of the international polio eradication initiative in Northern Nigeria, focusing on the historical, cultural, political context of this campaign, with publications in Social Science & Medicine (2006), Post-Polio International (2008), and in the edited volume, Anthropology and Public Health: Bridging Differences in Culture and Society (2009). The book, The Politics of Polio in Northern Nigeria, was published by Indiana University Press in July 2010.
