SUMMARY:Exhibition:4\,000 Years for Choice
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Vestiges: Oil\, Watercolor & Pastel Painting
DESCRIPTION:Growing up in Detroit\, Chicago based artist Carol Luc witnessed firsthand the slow decline of many architectural structures\, and the emptiness provoked her to reexamine how spaces narrate their story. \"I use architectural elements to examine the interplay between light and shadow\, form and structure\, and explore the relationship between material substance and nothingness.\" Luc has an MFA in painting from Northern Illinois University and an MA in painting from Wayne State University. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: Plainly Spoken
DESCRIPTION:View a range of binding ideas that came to fruition: models that replicate books from a historical period\, cut-aways that visually reveal their hidden structure\, design bindings that interpret a concept from the text\, and artists’ bindings that play with structures and materials to create something new.\n\nIn this traveling exhibit the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers showcases archivist and book conservator Julia Miller’s text Books Will Speak Plain. Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Marshall M. Weainberg Symposium 2014: Neurolaw
DESCRIPTION:How should our judgments about criminal guilt and innocence be influenced by neurological findings? How should neuroscience inform our practices of intervention\, sentencing\, and rehabilitation? How should judges and juries evaluate evidence about defendants' brain states? Who has a right to acquire and use such evidence? And who has a right for it not to be acquired? These are just a few questions in the rapidly developing field of neurolaw---the study of the interface between neuroscience and legal thought and practice. Addressing the descriptive and normative dimensions of such questions requires serious engagement with philosophy\, psychology\, and other areas in cognitive science. The 2014 Weinberg Symposium is an interdisciplinary conversation with eminent researchers in each of these fields.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CJS Noon Lecture Series. \"The ”˜Kirishitan’ Japan and the World in Early-Modern Japanese Literature\"
DESCRIPTION:The talk analyzes the representations of Japan and the Kirishitan that circulated widely during the Edo period in three pseudohistorical narratives of the arrival and expulsion of the Christian missionaries. In these tales\, the Kirishitan is subdued not only through expulsion\, but also by his representation as an uncouth and very common villain\, in contrast to the civilized Japanese. And just as the barbarian Other is ritually defeated and abjected in the tales through the plot and the representation of that Other\, it is also conquered through a geographic and cultural representation that places Japan at the center\, and the Kirishitan on the periphery.\n\n

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Information Sessions on Teaching and Research at UMMA
DESCRIPTION:The University of Michigan Museum of Art will be holding information sessions on teaching and research with our collection at the Duderstadt Center on North Campus on Thursday\, March 20\, 2:00-3:00. A grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation enables us to provide faculty and graduate students with direct and personalized assistance with collections searches\, object research\, and curriculum development\, as well as with accessing art with classes or for research. We are particularly interested in promoting creative\, interdisciplinary approaches to teaching with visual and material culture and in assisting innovative use of our collection by faculty and graduate students who work in academic units that do not regularly work with art objects. We have had notable successes working with instructors in a wide range of programs\, including Theater and Drama\, Psychology\, Kinesiology\, and numerous new partners from across the humanities. \n\nThese two sessions will take place in Conference Room 4 of the Duderstadt Center and will be conducted by the Mellon Academic Coordinator\, David Choberka\, and Mellon Collections Assistant\, Anne Drozd. Interested faculty and graduate students are invited to attend. The session will be a reiteration of the sessions that we've offered in previous semesters. If you have any questions or would like more information but are not able to attend the session\, please contact David Choberka (dchoberk@umich.edu).\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Research Through Making
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, research and creative practice have been constructed as \"opposites.\" This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools\, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an \"applied art.\" Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases\, design can be a purely problem solving activity\, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.\n\nIn its fifth year\, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research\, worked on by faculty\, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.\nThis year's projects:\n\n\"City of Nights: Detroit Illuminated\": Karl Daubmann\, Osman Kahn (UM Art and Design) and Catie Newell\n\"PneuSystems\": Kathy Velikov\, Geoffrey Thun\, and Santinder Singh Baveja (UM College of Engineering)\n\"Displace\": Wes McGee\, Catie Newell\, and Brandon Weiner (UM library)\n\"Carbon Fiber Architecture\": Glenn Wilcox and Anca Trandafirescu\n\"Knit Architectures\": Sean Ahlquist\, Wes McGee\, Anthony Waas (UM Engineering)\, and Georg Essl (UM Engineering)\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Conversations on Europe
DESCRIPTION:Michelle Moyd\, assistant professor of history\, Indiana University\n\nThe East African campaign of World War I engaged hundreds of thousands of soldiers\, porters\, and other laborers between 1914 and 1918. Its geographical scope encompassed the lands that today comprise mainland Tanzania\, Rwanda\, Burundi\, Mozambique\, Malawi\, Zambia\, and more. This paper provides an overview of how different African actors within the East African theater experienced the war\, highlighting localized understandings of the nature of warfare\, its costs\, and in some cases\, the opportunities it made available. For example\, in what ways did the East African campaign simply appear as a mere continuation of previous wars of colonial conquest to certain residents of German East Africa? This paper also traces how some of the more “global” aspects of the war\, such as food shortages and disease\, manifested in local contexts. This paper argues that by labeling extra-European theaters of war as “sideshows\,” we miss opportunities to explore commonalities and differences in diverse human experiences of the war. Certainly to those who lived through it\, the East African campaign was no sideshow\, but instead a profoundly disorienting and disruptive era of loss\, suffering\, socio-economic disruption\, and political change.\n\nMichelle Moyd is an Assistant Professor of History at Indiana University–Bloomington. She received her Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2008. She specializes in African history\, with a particular focus on the social and cultural history of African colonial militaries and colonial warfare. Her first book\, Violent Intermediaries: African Soldiers\, Conquest\, and Everyday Colonialism in German East Africa will appear in the New African Histories series at Ohio University Press in Summer 2014.\n\nWorld War I was a major turning point in world history that brought Europe’s long nineteenth century to a close and ushered in the conflicts of the twentieth century. Beginning in 2014\, the Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia is sponsoring a series of programs–WWI 1914-2014: Reflecting on the 100th Anniversary of WWI–that examine the many ways that WWI changed Europe’s place in the world.\n\nSponsors: CES\, African Studies Center

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar
DESCRIPTION:Variations in atmospheric carbon dioxide\, CO2\, provide unique\, large-scale constraints on the global carbon cycle. At interannual timescales\, atmospheric CO2 variations primarily reflect variations in terrestrial ecosystem carbon fluxes and have been linked to climatic drivers such as temperature and precipitation. In this talk\, I will discuss how measurements of the temporal evolution of CO2 in different latitude bands may be used to account for global fire emissions and to quantify the sensitivity of terrestrial ecosystem fluxes to temperature and drought stress. \n	Several recent studies have identified the temperature dependence of tropical net ecosystem exchange (NEE) as a primary driver of terrestrial ecosystem variability by analyzing a single globally averaged time series of CO2 anomalies. By simulating atmospheric CO2 from simple proxies for ecosystem processes\, we found that NEE responses to temperature\, NEE responses to drought stress\, and fire emissions all contributed significantly to CO2 variability\, suggesting that no single mechanism is the dominant driver. In fact\, the sum of drought and fire contributions to CO2 variability exceeded direct NEE responses to temperature in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Accounting for fires\, the sensitivity of tropical NEE to temperature stress decreased by 25% to 2.9 ± 0.9 Pg C y-1 K-1. Our findings provide a more mechanistic understanding of processes that control contemporary carbon cycling and are an impetus to accurately implement these controls in Earth System Models to ensure improved prediction of long term feedbacks between climate change and the carbon cycle.

SUMMARY:Other:ISIS-Interdisciplinary Seminar on Islamic Studies. \"American Muslims and the Reform of Islam\"
DESCRIPTION:Zareena Grewal is a historical anthropologist and a documentary filmmaker whose research focuses on race\, gender\, religion\, nationalism\, and transnationalism across a wide spectrum of American Muslim communities. Her first book\, Islam is a Foreign Country: American Muslims and the Global Crisis of Authority (NYU 2013)\, is an ethnography of transnational Muslim networks that link US mosques to Islamic movements in the post-colonial Middle East through debates about the reform of Islam. Her first film\, By the Dawn’s Early Light: Chris Jackson’s Journey to Islam (Cinema Guild 2004)\, examines the racialization of Islam and the scrutiny of American Muslims’ patriotism long before September 11\,\, 2001. Her new project combines ethnographic and cultural studies analyses with historical research on the range of meanings the Quran has had for Americans in relation to national debates about religious tolerance. She was a Fulbright Fellow in Egypt (2002-3) and she received the Fulbright's prestigious Islamic Civilization Grant. Zareena received her doctorate from the interdisciplinary Program in Anthropology and History at the University of Michigan.

SUMMARY:Other:Penny Stamps Distinguished Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Artist\, policy advocate\, and researcher Laurie Jo Reynolds has worked for over two decades to address the negative representations of people in prison. Her “Legislative Art” participates and intervenes in government systems\, with the goal of concrete political change. For the past eight years Reynolds has focused on Tamms Correctional Center\, the notorious supermax prison in southern Illinois designed for sensory deprivation. As a 2010 Soros Justice Fellow\, Reynolds researched and advocated for best practices to stop sexual abuse and reduce crime recidivism. She produced cultural events and conceptual art objects as part of an education program to open dialogue about the unintended consequences of the public sex-offender registry and residency restrictions. Reynolds was awarded a 2013 Creative Capital grant to produce the Honey Bun Comedy Hour\, a video and performance variety show depicting the horror\, boredom\, and small mercies of prison life.

SUMMARY:Performance:The Blind Boys of Alabama
DESCRIPTION:The Blind Boys of Alabama are an American institution\, with a 60-year career that had its beginnings early in the era of modern African-American gospel music. Their sinewy harmonies and fiery vocal effects are instantly identifiable\, and the sheer spiritual power of their music brings audiences to their feet and touches the soul. And when they really get down to the business of taking the audience to church\, well\, hold on to your hats. The Blind Boys have a new album\, \"I'll Find a Way\,\" featuring such classics-to-be as \"There Will Never Been Any Peace (Till God Is Seated at the Conference Table).\" The album is a bit more hardcore than the Blind Boys' other recent outings\, drawing on the classic Sam Cooke/Soul Stirrers gospel style. Everybody should experience the Blind Boys once\, but they're no relic: since 2000\, they’ve won five Grammys and four Gospel Music Awards.\n
