Its geographical scope encompassed the lands that today comprise mainland Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi, Mozambique, Malawi, Zambia, and more. This paper provides an overview of how different African actors within the East African theater experienced the war, highlighting localized understandings of the nature of warfare, its costs, and in some cases, the opportunities it made available. For example, in what ways did the East African campaign simply appear as a mere continuation of previous wars of colonial conquest to certain residents of German East Africa? This paper also traces how some of the more \u201cglobal\u201d\u009d aspects of the war, such as food shortages and disease, manifested in local contexts. This paper argues that by labeling extra-European theaters of war as \u201csideshows,\u201d\u009d we miss opportunities to explore commonalities and differences in diverse human experiences of the war. Certainly to those who lived through it, the East African campaign was no sideshow, but instead a profoundly disorienting and disruptive era of loss, suffering, socio-economic disruption, and political change.\r\n\r\nMichelle Moyd is an Assistant Professor of History at Indiana University\u2013Bloomington. She received her Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2008. She specializes in African history, with a particular focus on the social and cultural history of African colonial militaries and colonial warfare. At interannual timescales, atmospheric CO2 variations primarily reflect variations in terrestrial ecosystem carbon fluxes and have been linked to climatic drivers such as temperature and precipitation. In this talk, I will discuss how measurements of the temporal evolution of CO2 in different latitude bands may be used to account for global fire emissions and to quantify the sensitivity of terrestrial ecosystem fluxes to temperature and drought stress. \r\n\tSeveral recent studies have identified the temperature dependence of tropical net ecosystem exchange (NEE) as a primary driver of terrestrial ecosystem variability by analyzing a single globally averaged time series of CO2 anomalies. By simulating atmospheric CO2 from simple proxies for ecosystem processes, we found that NEE responses to temperature, NEE responses to drought stress, and fire emissions all contributed significantly to CO2 variability, suggesting that no single mechanism is the dominant driver. In fact, the sum of drought and fire contributions to CO2 variability exceeded direct NEE responses to temperature in both the northern and southern hemispheres. Accounting for fires, the sensitivity of tropical NEE to temperature stress decreased by 25% to 2.9 \u00b1 0.9 Pg C y-1 K-1.
