SUMMARY:Exhibition:4\,000 Years for Choice
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Exhibit: Plainly Spoken
DESCRIPTION:View a range of binding ideas that came to fruition: models that replicate books from a historical period\, cut-aways that visually reveal their hidden structure\, design bindings that interpret a concept from the text\, and artists’ bindings that play with structures and materials to create something new.\n\nIn this traveling exhibit the Midwest Chapter of the Guild of Book Workers showcases archivist and book conservator Julia Miller’s text Books Will Speak Plain. Incorporating 30 years of her notes and observations\, the 500-page handbook is aimed at conservators\, collectors\, librarians\, and book lovers\, for the identification and description of book structures and styles. Bookbinders from across the country acquired the text of the book in folded sheets and\, months later\, presented them to a jury as completed books with custom bindings.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. \"Beyond Pluralism: Rethinking Race in Malaysia\"
DESCRIPTION:For too long\, thinking about race in Malaysia has been directed by state discourse. The state-driven paradigm of pluralism\, as manifested in the separate and separable “Malay”/ “Chinese”/ “Indian”/ “Others” racial categorizations\, with their origins in the political economy of nineteenth-century British colonial rule\, is deeply embedded in ideologies\, policies\, and practices and also integrated into formal structures and institutions. Although these categories of race and naming have lost much of their salience on the ground\, the state continues to mobilize them as a primary marker of difference and differentiation between groups. The inherent violence of the hegemonic “MCIO” construct has also engendered inequalities by exercising enormous power as the basis for dominance and control. In spite of the pervasiveness of state representations\, social shifts and transitions – as epitomized by cultural representations in literature and\, also\, film\, music\, the visual and performing arts – are signs of transformation and transcendence that suggest a move away from race-based thinking. These social indicators offer us a space to begin a new conversation about race in Malaysia. This lecture explores the significance of these changes in challenging dominant constructions of race and their implications for cultural politics and Malaysian Studies. By focusing on the tensions between state constructions of race and cultural practices and productions “from below”\, this lecture contends that the disjunction that exists between “how we are represented and how we have come to represent ourselves” constitutes an important point of departure for knowledge construction. Since state and other hegemonic actors who benefit from dominant racial paradigms have a vested interest in maintaining them and tend to resist reform and innovation\, it is imperative that the attempt to rearticulate race is done at\, from\, and through this site of ideological and conceptual rupture. The term “rethinking” in the title\, then\, points not only to the new directions in Malaysian social relations but also to the need to conceive new paradigms in the light of evolving social and cultural realities. \n\nSpeaker is Sharmani Gabriel\, professor of English\, University of Malaya.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Research Through Making
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, research and creative practice have been constructed as \"opposites.\" This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools\, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an \"applied art.\" Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases\, design can be a purely problem solving activity\, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.\n\nIn its fifth year\, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research\, worked on by faculty\, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.\nThis year's projects:\n\n\"City of Nights: Detroit Illuminated\": Karl Daubmann\, Osman Kahn (UM Art and Design) and Catie Newell\n\"PneuSystems\": Kathy Velikov\, Geoffrey Thun\, and Santinder Singh Baveja (UM College of Engineering)\n\"Displace\": Wes McGee\, Catie Newell\, and Brandon Weiner (UM library)\n\"Carbon Fiber Architecture\": Glenn Wilcox and Anca Trandafirescu\n\"Knit Architectures\": Sean Ahlquist\, Wes McGee\, Anthony Waas (UM Engineering)\, and Georg Essl (UM Engineering)\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Theme Semester Lecture Series: \"Erotic Encounters: Shape-shifting Cops and the Criminal in Public Culture\"
DESCRIPTION:The ”˜encounter’- a euphemism for extra judicial killings- which would seemingly be the dark well kept state secret is ironically one of the most visible of public phenomenon\, appearing almost on a daily basis on television\, newspapers\, and numerous films based on the lives of encounter specialists. This lecture examines the idea of the law of the police\, a term Walter Benjamin coined to describe a zone of in distinction that suspends the difference between the law making and the law preserving function of violence\, and institutes the police as the ghostly presence in modern politics. Lawrence Liang examines a set of films in which cops and criminals exchange identities alongside an examination of the career of two encounter specialists\, Daya Nayak and Pradeep Sharma\, and their relation to Hindi cinema and poses the question of how we think of the shape-shifter as a central figure in debates on law\, sovereignty\, and violence in the post 9/11 world.

SUMMARY:Other:Todd Cronan Lecture\, \"The Medium Has No Message: The (Non)Politics of Medium from Kandinsky to Benjamin\"
DESCRIPTION:Does the medium have a message? Is there a deep connection between media and subjectivity? Does the ubiquity of images that seemingly defines modernity constitute or transform our consciousness? Do the media that we use shape or even determine our politics? For a wide range of modernists and (for most) postmodernists the connection is assumed\, a given. Looking at a foundational moment of media theory–the moment of Kandinsky’s first abstractions to Benjamin’s theory of mechanical reproduction–I show how a growing pessimism about human agency finds its resolution in a utopian optimism about technology’s effects (even or especially when that technology is the object of critique). I will show what is mistaken about correlating media and subjectivity. I will also suggest how this now canonized mistake can and should be replaced with something better.\n\nTodd Cronan is Assistant Professor of art history at Emory University\, where his research centers on twentieth-century art and art theory with particular emphasis on problems around expression\, intention\, affect\, form and meaning. He is the author of Against Affective Formalism: Matisse\, Bergson\, Modernism (Univ. of Minnesota Press\, 2013) and Matisse (Phaidon\, 2014). His articles have appeared in the New German Critique\, British Journal of the History of Philosophy\, Design and Culture\, Zetischrift fur Kunstgeschichte\, qui parle and nonsite.org and he serves on the editorial board of nonsite.org. His current book project\, Seeing Photographically\, looks at photographic debates about the ontology of the medium and how those ideas shaped both photographic and painterly practice in the first half of the 20th c.

DESCRIPTION:Visit event page to purchase tickets: http://ums.org/performance/asif-ali-khan-qawwali-music-of-pakistan/\n\nUMS brings Asif Ali Khan to Ann Arbor in conjunction with UMMA's exhibition of Doris Duke's Shangri La: Architecture\, Landscape\, and Islamic Art on view through May 4\, 2014. To learn more about UMMA's exhibition\, visit www.umma.umich.edu. Asif is a superstar in his native Pakistan and a powerful figure on the international stage\, remaining faithful to the sublime traditions of devotional Sufi music. His music can be meditative and trance-inducing\, before\, at a turn\, becoming thrilling and ecstatic. To hear his voice soaring above the call-and-response choruses\, rhythmic hand claps\, percussion\, and harmonium of his accompanying musicians is an inspiring experience whether you're an adherent of the Sufi faith or not.

SUMMARY:Performance:Riders in the Sky
DESCRIPTION:Coming up on 40 years of great entertainment \"the cowboy way\,\" Riders in the Sky roll on with their mix of Western song classics and zany send-ups of the same. What sometimes gets overlooked amid the hilarity is that Ranger Doug (Idol of American Youth)\, Woody Paul (King of the Cowboy Fiddlers)\, Joey (the Cowpolka King)\, and Too Slim (Licensed Driver) are matchless musicians\, with a huge and growing stock of old and new songs to draw on as they deepen a great American tradition. And can Toby Keith do rope tricks on stage? Ranger Doug was an Ann Arborite once upon a time\, and the group's Ark shows have been uniformly terrific. Riders In The Sky are exceptional are the ONLY exclusively Western artist to have won a Grammy\, and Riders have won two). That the band was even formed is a feat of improbable likelihood. What are the odds that a theoretical plasma physicist\, a wildlife manager–galvanizer–Life Scout\, an English major–shot putter–Bluegrass Boy\, and a Polka Hall of Fame member would collectively become \"America's Favorite Cowboys\"?
