Greimas Center for Semiotics and Literary Theory, Vilnius University\r\n\r\nThe city of Vilnius\u2013the contemporary capital of Lithuania\u2013has been the subject of an array of poetic imagination, ranging from Polish romanticism and Russian symbolism of the 19th century to Yiddish (and Hebrew) modernism and (Soviet) Lithuanian socialist realism of the 20th century. The stylistic, artistic and ideological variety of Vilnius poetry can only be matched by its linguistic diversity. In addition, because of dramatic political, social, and demographic changes\u2013almost 90% of the city\u2019s population was either killed or displaced during the WWII decade\u2013the city-inspired narratives have produced a particular genre of urban poetics based on biographical accounts of loss, exile and, occasionally, return and rediscovery. This lecture is about the polyglot map of the wartime city in poetry. In particular, it will focus on four poets\u2013Johannes Bobrowski, Abraham Sutzkever, Czeslaw Milosz, and Abba Kovner\u2013writing in German, Yiddish, Polish, and Hebrew, respectively. For all of these poets, spatial vocabularies, linguistic renditions, historical positions and lyrical wanderings through the city have been shaped by their distinct experiences of war and personal loss in post-war Europe. The talk will parallel three poetic\u2013German, Jewish, and Polish\u2013reincarnations of Vilnius, simultaneous with the absence of war memory (and literature) in the actual Soviet and Lithuanian city.\r\n\r\nLaimonas Briedis is a native of Vilnius. He studied geography, history, and literature at Vilnius University, UCLA, and University of British Columbia. In 2005, he received a Ph.D. in human geography at University of British Columbia with a dissertation on the historical and cultural imagination of Vilnius. From 2006-08, he conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto\u2019s Department of History. A senior research fellow at A. J. Greimas Center for Semiotics and Literary Theory at Vilnius University, he is currently is working on the creation of a literary atlas of Vilnius and writing a book on the poetic geography of Vilnius. Briedis has authored numerous articles and two acclaimed books: Vilnius: City of Strangers (Central European University Press, 2010) and Vilnius: savas ir svetimas (Baltos lankos, 2011, in Lithuanian). He regularly appears as a guest speaker on Lithuanian National Radio and has given talks at the Jerusalem, London, Vilnius, and Warsaw Book Fairs and the Vancouver Jewish Book Festival; he has also lectured at Yale University, YIVO, Bard College, Pasadena Art Center, University of Washington, and the Woodrow Wilson Center. Intellectuals like Avedis Aliksanyan (Istanbul 1910 \u2013 Paris 1984), Aram Pehlivanyan (pen name A. Savars, his Turkish name within the communist party (TKP) was Ahmet Saydan, Istanbul 1917 \u2013 Leipzig 1979), Zaven Biberyan (Istanbul, 1921\u20131984), and others were the first to face the post-genocidal habitus of Turkey. By dwelling upon their writings, published in Nor Or, Suciyan will discuss the ways, meaning\/s, and consequences of resistance in the early republican era, especially after the Second World War. This will demonstrate two things: first, the main issues confronting Armenians in Turkey including representation, international post-war politics, the undermining of communal administration, and anti-Armenian campaigns; and second, how all these constituted the post-genocidal habitus of Turkey.\r\n\r\nTalin Suciyan was born in Istanbul, Turkey. She attended the Armenian elementary school in her town and the Sahakyan Nunyan Armenian High School in Samatya. She graduated from Istanbul University\u2019s radio, TV, and cinema department and continued her studies in Germany, South Africa, and India, receiving her master\u2019s degree in social sciences. For 10 years, she worked in the field of journalism, producing and co-directing documentaries. From 2007-08, she reported from Armenia for Agos Weekly. In October 2008, she began to work at Ludwig Maximilian University\u2019s (LMU) Institute of Near and Middle Eastern Studies as a teaching fellow, and as a doctoral student at the university\u2019s Chair of Turkish studies. Since 2010, she has organized a lecture series at LMU aimed at bridging the gap between Armenian and Ottoman studies. She successfully defended her Ph.D. dissertation in June 2013. Her dissertation will be published by the end of 2014 from I.B. Tauris. Suciyan continues to teach Turkish studies at LMU as a postdoctoral fellow. She was initially appointed deputy director of the Peace Corps on June 23, 2010. She is a returned Peace Corps Volunteer (Western Samoa, 1981\u201383) with more than two decades of experience in public health focused on HIV\/AIDS and maternal and child health.\r\n\r\nSince 2010, Hessler-Radelet has spearheaded a comprehensive agency assessment and reform effort to improve efficiency across the organization\u2013the first such endeavor since its founding in 1961. As deputy director, she led the roll-out of the Focus In\/Train Up initiative, which provides targeted technical training to Volunteers to increase their capacity-building abilities. In her concurrent role as chief operating officer, she ensured the agency was a vigilant steward of government resources and taxpayer dollars.\r\n\r\nDuring her tenure, Hessler-Radelet has led the implementation of new policies and processes to improve the health and safety of Volunteers, including the requirements codified in the 2011 Kate Puzey Peace Corps Volunteer Protection Act and policies and programs aimed at reducing the risk of sexual assault and violent crime. She was instrumental in instituting the new Office of Global Health and HIV and the Global Health Service Partnership as well as led an effort to overhaul Volunteer recruiting and engage more Volunteers in post-service public education activities.\r\n\r\nPrior to her confirmation as deputy director, Hessler-Radelet was vice president and director of the Washington, D.C., office of John Snow Inc., a global public-health organization, where she oversaw the management of public-health programs in more than 85 countries.\r\n\r\nHessler-Radelet was actively involved in the establishment of the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and was a primary author of PEPFAR's first strategic plan.
