SUMMARY:Exhibition:4\,000 Years for Choice
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Application of Hierarchical Linear Models
DESCRIPTION:This workshop teaches the concepts and analysis of multilevel data through multilevel models (also known as hierarchical linear models or mixed models). With understanding of basic linear regression concepts as a prerequisite\, the instructors will cover a wide range of topics including clustered data\, longitudinal studies\, and clustered longitudinal data. Participants will be introduced to the use of HLM 7.0 software. The workshop will consist of lively lectures and hands-on examples using HLM software. Many studies in social sciences (e.g.\, education\, human development\, public health\, sociology) are multilevel\, longitudinal\, or both. Multilevel data arise when participants are clustered within social settings. The variation and covariation within and between such settings are often of interest substantively and should not be ignored when assessing relationships between explanatory variables and outcomes. In longitudinal research\, we repeatedly observe subjects. These repeated measures for each participant will be correlated and explanatory variables may be time-varying or time-invariant. This workshop will consider the issues of analysis that arise in multilevel and longitudinal research settings.\n\nWe will first consider two-level cross-sectional studies in which persons (level-1) are nested within groups (level-2). The level-1 model specifies a process within each group\, and the level-2 model explains how these processes are different between groups. Next\, we will discuss two-level studies of individual growth and compare the structures of these studies to multilevel studies. We will also consider three-level models. We will focus on the case in which repeated measures (level-1) are nested within persons (level-2) who are themselves nested in organizations (level-3).\n\nAll of these studies will involve nearly continuous outcomes for which the normality distribution is at least plausible. They will also feature purely nested designs (e.g.\, persons nested within organizations). The workshop will provide participants with an overview of other types of applications where hierarchical linear models or generalized hierarchical linear models are appropriate (e.g.\, binary outcomes)\, and briefly discuss how the HLM software could be used to model such data.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:No-Touching Zone: An Exhibition by Chris Hyndman
DESCRIPTION:Chris Hyndman’s installation\, “No-Touching Zone\,” presents exciting new paintings that prompt us to think about the active surface of images in an age of digital saturation. These highly inventive textured and patterned pictorial surfaces explore the way we see things\, from the inside and outside of paintings. They also allude to Hyndman’s hard to extrapolate personal experience of being a Canadian living in the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Adventures in Videoland: The Fun and Trouble of Researching Small-Town Video Stores
DESCRIPTION:U-M faculty member Daniel Herbert presents material from his book \"Videoland: Movie Culture at the American Video Store\" (UC Press\, 2014)\, which details the impact video rental stores had on movie culture over the last several decades.\n\nHerbert focuses on his examination of small-town video stores and their workers. For many years\, rural Americans accessed movie culture at their local\, independently-owned video shops. This talk highlights the adventure of getting to these places and the pleasures of interviewing these workers\, and shows how these places synthesized “Hollywood” with contemporary small-town life.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the University Library and the U-M Department of Screen Arts and Cultures.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:CSEAS Lecture Series. \"Plots & Lines: Narrating a Personal Sense of Place in Southeast Asia\"
DESCRIPTION:Exploring contemporary art works made by Amanda Heng\, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook\, Wong Hoy Cheong\, Lee Wen\, Redza Piyadasa\, S Priyanto\, Norberto Roldan\, Simryn Gill (and many others)\, the notion of place is often marked by personal anxieties when confronted with prospects of nation and governance. Language\, particularly with the format of a script\, is often used by these artists to negotiate the entanglements with their surroundings. Rather than adopting the format of a formal lecture\, Chong will attempt to produce this talk as a curatorial proposal for an imaginary exhibition dealing with these ideas. \n\nHeman Chong is an artist\, curator and writer based in Singapore. His conceptually-charged investigations into how individuals and communities imagine the future generates a multiplicity of objects\, images\, installations\, situations and texts. In this Plot & Lines\, Chong will speak about the combination of text and image in the work of artists living and working in cities located in South-east Asia as a method where preconceived ideas about place-making and community are challenged.\n\nThis event is co-sponsored by the Dept. of Art History and the Office of the Vice Provost for Academic Affairs.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Research Through Making
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, research and creative practice have been constructed as \"opposites.\" This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools\, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an \"applied art.\" Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases\, design can be a purely problem solving activity\, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.\n\nIn its fifth year\, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research\, worked on by faculty\, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.\nThis year's projects:\n\n\"City of Nights: Detroit Illuminated\": Karl Daubmann\, Osman Kahn (UM Art and Design) and Catie Newell\n\"PneuSystems\": Kathy Velikov\, Geoffrey Thun\, and Santinder Singh Baveja (UM College of Engineering)\n\"Displace\": Wes McGee\, Catie Newell\, and Brandon Weiner (UM library)\n\"Carbon Fiber Architecture\": Glenn Wilcox and Anca Trandafirescu\n\"Knit Architectures\": Sean Ahlquist\, Wes McGee\, Anthony Waas (UM Engineering)\, and Georg Essl (UM Engineering)\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Sex\, Race and Sciences of Human Behavior
DESCRIPTION:This talk examines how the conceptualization of certain behaviors (sexuality\; aggression) in preparation for their scientific examination incorporates and/or reinforces social ideologies of sex and race.\n\nA reception will follow the lecture.\n\nHelen Longino received her PhD from the Johns Hopkins University in 1973. Her teaching and research interests are in philosophy of science\, social epistemology\, and feminist philosophy. Longino is the author of \"Science As Social Knowledge\"(Princeton University Press\, 1990)\, \"The Fate of Knowledge\" (Princeton University Press\, 2001) and \"Studying Human Behavior\,\" a study of the relationship between logical\, epistemological\, and social aspects of behavioral research (University of Chicago Press\, 2013).

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Body/Nobody: Reflections by the Artist on Her Work
DESCRIPTION:Abstract: Through this talk\, I want to discuss about the other kinds of bodies in my work- metaphysical\, physical\, emotional and subconscious. I will try to draw a narrative of my art practice. My art practice has been primarily read through the morbid and humorous representation of human and non-human\, organic and inorganic bodies.\n\nIt will be an insight into my works through my words. Through this talk I want to evade all the stereotypes that have come to be associated with me\; for I feel that change is essential and indispensable in making a body of art wholesome.\n\nI would like to look at ”˜feminism’ through the narrative of my work\, which is not central to one specific gender\, rather takes a more humane approach to appreciate life\, emotions and feelings and not only through the lens of acute eroticism and sexuality in my art practice.\n\nFurther I would like to explore the idea of language as it has evolved in my language over the years. Coming from a Bengali background and struggling with a more socially accepted “metropolitan” language like English I have come to use the unconscious and non-structured aspect of our consciousness in order to deal with this marginality. For me marginality is not only socio-political and cultural. It is also of our inner voices and emotions that we have come to ignore or forget under cultural pressure. This marginality resides in our body and our body resides on those margins.\n\nIn a way\, the narrative strewn through this talk will reflect the merging/fading of physical body into an abstract ”˜nothingness’ in my works: a nothingness which is intangible but with a presence of its own.\n\nFor more details.\n\nApril 11\, 4:00 PM\, Room 1636 School of Social Work Building\n\nThis program is organized by the Center for South Asian Studies with support from the U-M LSA Theme Semester and co-sponsored by the University of Michigan Museum of Art\, the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design\, and History of Art.

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Chinese Cinema - The Tradition and the New Trend
DESCRIPTION:Chinese cinema is one of the oldest cinemas but\, for many reasons\, it had remained largely unknown to the outside world until the 1980s. From then on\, the Chinese cinema entered a brand new phase and enjoyed tremendous glory\; the 'Fifth Generation directors' won hundreds of awards at film festivals all over the world. Nonetheless\, the glory started fading at the beginning of the new millennium. After a brief retrospective survey of the cinema evolution\, Tan Ye will discuss three major traditions that fostered the Chinese cinema and then analyze the new trends that appeared during the economic boom of the last decade.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Special Event
DESCRIPTION:Mithu Sen (b. 1971\, West Bengal\, India) rose to prominence in the last decade for her drawings\, sculptures\, and installations in which sensual and grotesque representations of the human body\, animals\, and inanimate objects seethe with undercurrents of irony and wit. A prominent voice in contemporary art from India\, Sen upends common approaches to gender and sexuality. In her April 11 talk\, \"Body/Nobody\,\" she will be presenting work produced over the past ten years. She visits U-M in the context of the exhibition Mithu Sen: Border Unseen at Michigan State University's Broad Art Museum (April 25-July 27\, 2014) and in conjunction with the LSA Theme Semester \"India in the World.\" For more information please visit the http://www.lsa.umich.edu/india/events/art \n\nThis program is organized by the Center for South Asian Studies with support from the U-M LSA Theme Semester and co-sponsored by UMMA\, the Penny W. SUMMARY:Performance:Musicology Lecture: Lorenzo Candelaria (University of Texas\, Austin)
DESCRIPTION:\"Bernardino de Sahagún\&##39\;s Psalmodia Christiana and Catholic Formation Among the Mexica in Sixteenth-Century New Spain.\" In 1583\, Pedro Ocharte published the first book of vernacular sacred song in the Americas--the Psalmodia Christiana by Bernardino de Sahagún. Its 333 songs composed in the Nahuatl language sought to promote the formation of Catholic communities among the Mexica (commonly known as the \"Aztecs\"). This lecture highlights the legacy of Western plainchant traditions in the Christian evangelization of the New World and shows how Mexica sacred music traditions were folded into the European thrust of the Christian mission in sixteenth-century New Spain.
