SUMMARY:Exhibition:4\,000 Years for Choice
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Panoramic Delights of Leelanau: Color Photography
DESCRIPTION:Having raised his two children near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, Ken Scott has found much inspiration there. A self-taught photographer\, he started out with a 35mm camera\, heavy tripod\, either a 24 or 105 mm lens\, and a slow slide film (ASA 50). He is now climbing the digital ladder! Scott’s photography is the result of 20+ years of \"lots of patience\, recognizing the right place at the right time\, but not necessarily for the intended image”¦\" He shoots photographs around Leelanau County\, Michigan and stitches multiple images together to create vistas beyond what a single image can show.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:No-Touching Zone: An Exhibition by Chris Hyndman
DESCRIPTION:Chris Hyndman’s installation\, “No-Touching Zone\,” presents exciting new paintings that prompt us to think about the active surface of images in an age of digital saturation. These highly inventive textured and patterned pictorial surfaces explore the way we see things\, from the inside and outside of paintings. They also allude to Hyndman’s hard to extrapolate personal experience of being a Canadian living in the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

SUMMARY:Presentation:38th Annual Thomas Francis\, Jr. Memorial Lecture with Guest Speaker\, Dr. Nubia Munoz
DESCRIPTION:The Department of Epidemiology at the School of Public Health invites you to join us for our 38th Annual Thomas Francis\, Jr. Memorial Lecture on Tuesday\, April 15\, 2014 at 3 p.m. The lecture will take place at the School of Public Health\, Building 1\, in Auditorium 1755.\n\nThis year’s guest speaker is Dr. Nubia Muñoz. Dr. Muñoz is a former Unit chief at the International Agency for Research on Cancer in Lyon\, an Emeritus Scientist of the National Cancer Institute of Colombia\, and a member of the Society of Scholars of Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore.\n\nDr. Muñoz will speak on the topic of “Human papillomavirus in the etiology and prevention of genital cancers”.\n\nA reception will immediately follow the lecture in SPH I\, Community Room (Room 1680).\n\nSummary of Talk:\nThe molecular epidemiological studies that led to conclude that infection with certain types of human papillomavirus (HPV) is not only the main cause but also a necessary cause of cervical cancer and also contribute to the etiology of other anogenital cancers and cancer of the oropharynx will be reviewed\, as well as the implications of these findings in the great advances made in the prevention of HPV”associated diseases.\n\nBio:\nDr. Muñoz earned her Medical Degree and Board of Pathologist at the University of Valle in Cali\, Colombia. She served a Fellowship in Pathology and virology at the National Cancer Institute\, Bethesda\, Maryland\, and earned a Master’s Degree in Public Health and Cancer Epidemiology from The Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore\, Maryland. After completing her training she spent her 30 years career at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon\, France. Through successive promotions she reached the rank of Chief of the Unit of Field and Intervention Studies\, a position she held until the year 2002. She became then Emeritus professor of the National Cancer Institute of Colombia\, consultant to the IARC and the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona.\n\nShe has conducted epidemiological research on cancers linked to infectious agents\, which represent an important health problem in developing countries. She implemented various research projects in over 30 countries around the world. These have been instrumental in demonstrating the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) as the central and necessary cause of cervical cancer and a contributing factor in other cancers\, such oral cancer\; the causal role of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus in liver cancer\; and elucidating the role of Helicobacter pylori in gastric cancer. At the same time\, these various research projects provided her the opportunity of training local colleagues in Cancer Epidemiology. From her IARC unit she began to lead in the early1980s a massive effort that achieved two major goals: 1)\, demonstration that certain genotypes of HPV are unequivocally one the strongest cancer risk factors ever found. These findings have had important implications in primary prevention of cervical cancer by the use of prophylactic vaccines and on secondary prevention\, by the use of HPV assays in screening programs.2)\, she has played a catalytic role in the initiation of the first HBV vaccine trials to prevent liver cancer in The Gambia\, and later on the initiation and implementation of HPV vaccine trials to demonstrate their efficacy in the prevention of cervical cancer worldwide. She has authored over 380 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals and she serves on the editorial boards of seven international journals and on boards of several medical societies.\n\nDr. Muñoz has received various awards from her university and medical societies from Colombia\, she is member of Academy of Medicine of Colombia\, received the Distinguished Alumna Award of The Johns Hopkins University\, the membership of the Society of Scholars of The Johns Hopkins University\, the Distinguished Epidemiologist Award from three Epidemiology Societies of North America\, the Sir Richard Doll award from the International Epidemiological Association (IEA) in 2008. In 2008 she was also nominated jointly with Harald zur Hausen to the Nobel Prize of Medicine by the International Epidemiological Association for her pioneer work on HPV and cervical cancer. She received the 2009 Bruchbacher prize for Cancer Research from the Charles Rodolphe Brupbacher Foundation for Cancer Research in Zurich and the first Canada Gairdner Global Health award from the Gairdner Foundation. \n\nIn 2010 she was named “Chevalier de la Legion d’Honneur” by the French president\, the highest honour conferred by France. In 2011 she received the “Cruz de Boyaca” the highest honour conferred by Colombia\, her home country\, and was invited to deliver the prestigious “Cutter lecture on Preventive Medicine” at the Harvard School of Public Health. In Nov. 2012 she was invited to deliver the Geoffrey Howe Memorial Lecture at the School of Public Health of Columbia University in New York. In 2014 she has been invited to give the Thomas Francis\, Jr. Memorial Lecture at the School of Public Health of Michigan University.\n

Two challenges in particular arise in efforts to cross spatial and temporal scales\, to link experimental and community-based niche studies with phylogenetic and macroevolutionary approaches. First\, the niche is often best defined at a community level\, contrasting species with their immediate neighbors and competitors\, but this approach is difficult to map onto phylogenetic studies for comparative studies examining niche evolution. And second\, we still grapple with the connection between the potential for adaptive evolution in populations and observations of stasis\, niche conservatism and related macroevolutionary measures. In this lecture\, I will explore these challenges\, illustrating the potential for the alpha-beta niche distinction to help resolve the first\, and sharing results of an experimental study of niche evolution in vernal pool annuals (Lasthenia)\, and implications for understanding the recent radiation of this clade.\n\nPlease join us for a pre-seminar reception from 3:15 - 4 p.m. in Room 2060 Kraus Natural Science Building.

SUMMARY:Social / Informal Gathering:Beating the Blues
DESCRIPTION:Tuesdays – Beating the Blues. This session will give students information on what depression is and is not. It will also explore ways to help students feel more energized and well equipped to navigate through their difficult situation or depressed mood. \n\nMeets every Tuesday during the semester\, Led by Amanda Byrnes\, LMSW\n\nEach Tuesday 4:15-5:30 p.m. you and other interested students will meet with a counselor and focus on one of the most frequent concerns of U-M students. These are the very issues that U-M students have told us are the most common issues they deal with every day. The counselor will share some helpful information\, talk about strategies and clinical resources\, and she or he will also make time for you to share a little bit about your concerns (if you wish to do so). \n\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:David and Im Schafer
DESCRIPTION:Studiomake is based in Bangkok\, Thailand and is led by David Schafer and Im Sarasalin Schafer. This practice maintains that there is no distinct boundary between the act of design and the act of construction\; with a team of architects\, designers\, fabricators\, and builders they work in the overlapping realms of architecture\, interior\, furniture\, and objects. David and Im both received their Bachelor of Architecture degrees from the University of Arizonaand became licensed architects in 2007\, after which they promptly went to art school. For two years they explored the depths of metals and ceramics at Cranbrook Academy of Art before moving to Bangkok to start their practice and to build a home\, a studio\, and a workshop near the Chao Praya River in 2009. In addition to being lecturers at Rangsit University\, their recent projects include a series of ceramic pieces made by obstructing the process of traditional artisans\, a prototype for mass-produced emergency shelters for Habitat for Humanity Thailand\, a custom-extruded brick for the Guan Yin Pavilion\, and an art and design gallery for art and design students.

SUMMARY:Performance:Open Stage Showcase
DESCRIPTION:Each year\, the organizers of The Ark's monthly Open Stage nights bring back one or two of the many talented performers who have appeared over the course of this past year. This year's Open Stage Showcase performers are Darrin Breil and Lisa Ritchie. Darrin Breil says he was born to play music\, and after the purchase of his first acoustic guitar at age six there was no stopping this destiny. He would later describe a missing and longing feeling to be with a guitar again as his reason for seeking it out at such a young age. He was exposed to country music and classic rock early on\, and has been influenced by Bob Seger\, Motown\, guitarists like Elvis Presley’s Scotty Moore\, and the rhythmic stylings of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. Combining rhythmic roots\, pure emotion and lyrical poetry has created a sound that many who knew this well-traveled musician would simply call “Breilstyle.\"\n\nLisa Ritchie\, a recent graduate from the U-M\, says the majority of her time was split between two passions–God and music. In 2011\, she formed a band called Hush\, Love. A songwriter for 13 years\, she continually evolves in her style. “Some people know exactly what their style is and how to pursue it\, but I find mine to be constantly changing\, leading me to chase after a melody I just can’t quite write”¦yet.” Influences range from Shania Twain all the way to her current rekindled passion for punk rock. Her list of influences contains Death Cab for Cutie\, Yellow Card\, Coldplay\, and includes newer artists such as Milo Greene\, Roo Panes and Lord Huron. Lisa's songwriting has been shaped by the songs she never tires of. “'Title and Registration!' That is a song I will never be sick of listening to. So\, I think that’s my goal: to write a song you can listen to on repeat without getting tired of it. There’s some ”˜mystical’ element in songs like that\, they put feelings into words\,\" Lisa says.
