Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \r\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. After completing her training she spent her 30 years career at the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) in Lyon, France. Through successive promotions she reached the rank of Chief of the Unit of Field and Intervention Studies, a position she held until the year 2002. She became then Emeritus professor of the National Cancer Institute of Colombia, consultant to the IARC and the Catalan Institute of Oncology in Barcelona.\r\n\r\nShe has conducted epidemiological research on cancers linked to infectious agents, which represent an important health problem in developing countries. She implemented various research projects in over 30 countries around the world. These have been instrumental in demonstrating the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) as the central and necessary cause of cervical cancer and a contributing factor in other cancers, such oral cancer; the causal role of hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus in liver cancer; and elucidating the role of Helicobacter pylori in gastric cancer. At the same time, these various research projects provided her the opportunity of training local colleagues in Cancer Epidemiology. From her IARC unit she began to lead in the early1980s a massive effort that achieved two major goals: 1), demonstration that certain genotypes of HPV are unequivocally one the strongest cancer risk factors ever found. These findings have had important implications in primary prevention of cervical cancer by the use of prophylactic vaccines and on secondary prevention, by the use of HPV assays in screening programs.2), she has played a catalytic role in the initiation of the first HBV vaccine trials to prevent liver cancer in The Gambia, and later on the initiation and implementation of HPV vaccine trials to demonstrate their efficacy in the prevention of cervical cancer worldwide. She has authored over 380 scientific papers published in peer-reviewed journals and she serves on the editorial boards of seven international journals and on boards of several medical societies.\r\n\r\nDr. Mu\u00c3\u00b1oz has received various awards from her university and medical societies from Colombia, she is member of Academy of Medicine of Colombia, received the Distinguished Alumna Award of The Johns Hopkins University, the membership of the Society of Scholars of The Johns Hopkins University, the Distinguished Epidemiologist Award from three Epidemiology Societies of North America, the Sir Richard Doll award from the International Epidemiological Association (IEA) in 2008. In 2008 she was also nominated jointly with Harald zur Hausen to the Nobel Prize of Medicine by the International Epidemiological Association for her pioneer work on HPV and cervical cancer. The discussion will incorporate questions from the audience and will be moderated by CCS Director Mary Gallagher.\r\n\r\nLouisa Lim has spent ten years in China, currently as NPR\u2019s Beijing correspondent, and prior to that as the BBC\u2019s Beijing correspondent. She has won numerous awards for her radio and multimedia work, and was part of NPR teams that won a Peabody, an Alfred I Dupont-Columbia award and two Edward R. Murrow awards for their China coverage. Currently she is a Knight-Wallace Journalism Fellow at the University of Michigan. Her book \u201cThe People's Republic of Amnesia\" will be published by Oxford University Press (USA) in June 2014.\r\n\r\nWang Zheng is Associate Professor of History and Women\u2019s Studies and Associate Scientist of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. A graduate student at the University of California, Davis 25 years ago, she took donations from the UC students to Chinese students at the Tiananmen Square. Her experience in Beijing in 1989 turned her a committed academic activist promoting feminism in China. She is the founder and co-director of the UM-Fudan Joint Institute for Gender Studies at Fudan University, Shanghai. Her English publications concern changing gender discourses and relations in China's socioeconomic, political and cultural transformations of the past century, and feminism in China, both in terms of its historical development and its contemporary activism in the context of globalization. She is the author of Women in the Chinese Enlightenment: Oral and Textual Histories (UC Press, 1999). \r\n\r\nJeffrey Wasserstrom is Chancellor\u2019s Professor of History at UC Irvine, the Editor of the Journal of Asian Studies, and a frequent contributor to newspapers and magazines. This year's Open Stage Showcase performers are Darrin Breil and Lisa Ritchie. Darrin Breil says he was born to play music, and after the purchase of his first acoustic guitar at age six there was no stopping this destiny. He would later describe a missing and longing feeling to be with a guitar again as his reason for seeking it out at such a young age. He was exposed to country music and classic rock early on, and has been influenced by Bob Seger, Motown, guitarists like Elvis Presley\u2019s Scotty Moore, and the rhythmic stylings of Chuck Berry and Bo Diddley. Combining rhythmic roots, pure emotion and lyrical poetry has created a sound that many who knew this well-traveled musician would simply call \u201cBreilstyle.\"\r\n\r\nLisa Ritchie, a recent graduate from the U-M, says the majority of her time was split between two passions\u2013God and music. In 2011, she formed a band called Hush, Love. A songwriter for 13 years, she continually evolves in her style. \u201cSome people know exactly what their style is and how to pursue it, but I find mine to be constantly changing, leading me to chase after a melody I just can\u2019t quite write\u201d\u00a6yet.\u201d\u009d Influences range from Shania Twain all the way to her current rekindled passion for punk rock. Her list of influences contains Death Cab for Cutie, Yellow Card, Coldplay, and includes newer artists such as Milo Greene, Roo Panes and Lord Huron. Lisa's songwriting has been shaped by the songs she never tires of. \u201c'Title and Registration!' That is a song I will never be sick of listening to. So, I think that\u2019s my goal: to write a song you can listen to on repeat without getting tired of it.
