SUMMARY:Exhibition:4\,000 Years for Choice
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

These organic movements are revealed in her landscape paintings through juxtaposing patterns and colors of the farmlands and vineyards of Michigan. She received her Masters of Arts in Education degree from Kendall College of Art and Design and has taught K-12th grade art for 13 years. She is the recipient of three fellowships including the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund\, Les Tapies Art Teacher Fellowship in Southern France and the Teacher Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Panoramic Delights of Leelanau: Color Photography
DESCRIPTION:Having raised his two children near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, Ken Scott has found much inspiration there. A self-taught photographer\, he started out with a 35mm camera\, heavy tripod\, either a 24 or 105 mm lens\, and a slow slide film (ASA 50). He is now climbing the digital ladder! Scott’s photography is the result of 20+ years of \"lots of patience\, recognizing the right place at the right time\, but not necessarily for the intended image”¦\" He shoots photographs around Leelanau County\, Michigan and stitches multiple images together to create vistas beyond what a single image can show.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:No-Touching Zone: An Exhibition by Chris Hyndman
DESCRIPTION:Chris Hyndman’s installation\, “No-Touching Zone\,” presents exciting new paintings that prompt us to think about the active surface of images in an age of digital saturation. These highly inventive textured and patterned pictorial surfaces explore the way we see things\, from the inside and outside of paintings. They also allude to Hyndman’s hard to extrapolate personal experience of being a Canadian living in the United States.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Research Through Making
DESCRIPTION:Historically\, research and creative practice have been constructed as \"opposites.\" This is not an unusual struggle in architecture schools\, particularly in the context of a research university. This perceived tension between design and research is indicative of age-old anxieties within the architecture field to understand its nature as an \"applied art.\" Design can be a purely creative activity not unlike creative practices in music and art. In other cases\, design can be a purely problem solving activity\, not unlike research in engineering and industrial production.\n\nIn its fifth year\, University of Michigan Taubman College's Research Through Making (RTM) Program provides seed funding for faculty research\, worked on by faculty\, students and interdisciplinary experts. The exhibition presents tangible results of their collaborative work.\nThis year's projects:\n\n\"City of Nights: Detroit Illuminated\": Karl Daubmann\, Osman Kahn (UM Art and Design) and Catie Newell\n\"PneuSystems\": Kathy Velikov\, Geoffrey Thun\, and Santinder Singh Baveja (UM College of Engineering)\n\"Displace\": Wes McGee\, Catie Newell\, and Brandon Weiner (UM library)\n\"Carbon Fiber Architecture\": Glenn Wilcox and Anca Trandafirescu\n\"Knit Architectures\": Sean Ahlquist\, Wes McGee\, Anthony Waas (UM Engineering)\, and Georg Essl (UM Engineering)\n

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:Conversations on Europe
DESCRIPTION:Jean-Thomas Arrighi\, European University Institute Visiting Scholar\, U-M\n\nA referendum on whether Scotland should become an independent state will take place in September 2014\, and a similar consultation is set to be held in the Spanish Autonomous Community of Catalonia before the end of the year. Whilst the right of people to self-determination is enshrined in international law\, the membership and territorial boundaries delimiting the space over which this right can be exercised are almost always contested. Protracted migrations\, shifting frontiers resulting from the break-up of multinational states\, and the intermingling of nationalities across a single geographical space have often meant that one nation-building project could not be achieved without undermining another. Historical precedents as well as recent events in Crimea have given some credence to those who see minority nationalism as a fundamentally ethnic phenomenon\, essentially prone to subjugate internal minorities and hostile to immigration. This widely held view\, however\, is at odds with contemporary developments in Scotland and Catalonia\, where nationalists have increasingly couched their national claims claims in multicultural terms\, seeking to accommodate immigration-induced pluralism into their own imagined political community. In this lecture\, Jean-Thomas Arrighi compares the evolving relationship between nation-building and immigration in Scotland and Catalonia from a historical perspective and identifies the conditions under which nationalists came to embrace a predominantly territorial and multicultural conception of citizenship. He attributes this outcome to a combination of two factors\, namely nationalists’ vested interest in using migration-related policies and discourses as a means to enhance their internal and external legitimacy\, and contrasted dynamics of party competition at a sub-state level.\n\nJean-Thomas Arrighi is a visiting fellow at the Center for European Studies (CES) at the University of Michigan and a research fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute (EUI). He earned his PhD and MRes in political and social sciences at EUI\, as well as an MA in contemporary European studies from the University of Bath. While in residency at the University of Michigan\, he has taught a course in the Department of Political Science entitled “Migrations and the Transformations of Citizenship in Europe.” His research interests lie at the crossroads of territorial politics\, comparative politics\, migrations\, and nationalism studies.\n\nSponsors: CES\, WCED

SUMMARY:Lecture / Discussion:EEB Thursday Seminar Series
DESCRIPTION:The modern day is often caricatured by vertebrate biologists and paleontologists as the ”˜Age of Mammals\,’ remote from the ”˜Age of Fishes’ of the Devonian Period more than 350 million years ago. This reinforces a common perception that living fishes\, which collectively constitute half of all living backboned animals\, have exceptionally deep evolutionary roots. However\, a substantial fraction of diversity in this other half of the vertebrate tree of life was generated on a timescale comparable to that in birds and mammals. Drawing on the clues locked in genomes\, skeletons\, and rocks\, I will explore the origins of diversity in fishes at phylogenetic scales ranging from individual specialized lineages to hyperdiverse radiations containing several thousand species. I will show how quantitative approaches to evolutionary questions in ”˜deep time’ highlight potential effects of major events in earth history on the assembly of the modern fauna\, and illustrate how cutting-edge techniques are providing us with an unprecedented view of diversity deep within the geological record.

SUMMARY:Other:ISIS-Interdisciplinary Seminar on Islamic Studies. Localizing Islam through Transnational Influences
DESCRIPTION:Jessica Winegar is a sociocultural anthropologist whose work investigates how people articulate understandings of history and political-economic change through cultural production and consumption\, in particular through competing notions of culture and culturedness. She is primarily concerned with the multiple ways that culture projects create social hierarchies and modern subjects while frequently hiding the mechanisms of these processes\, thereby contributing to their durability. \n\nHer first book Creative Reckonings: The Politics of Art and Culture in Contemporary Egypt (Stanford University Press\, 2006) focused on these processes in the realm of the visual arts. It is an ethnographic study of the intense debates over cultural authenticity and artistic value that occur in a postcolonial society undergoing market liberalization. It examines how cultural elites reckon with the legacies of colonialism\, socialism\, and modernism in order to produce meaningful\, yet competing\, versions of national and elite visual culture in a context where “culture” itself is becoming increasingly globalized and commodified.

SUMMARY:Performance:Opera Studio “Green Opera” Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Green operas are produced with a focus on minimizing the resources required to produce a theatrical performance by using recycled materials for scenery and costumes\, projected scenic elements\, LED lights and other measures which can reduce the carbon footprint of a typical production by as much as 95%. The works themselves also focus on environmental themes: Rusalka’s Tale is a one act adaptation of the Dvorak opera presented in English\, and L’enfant et les Sortileges by Maurice Ravel\, presented in French with English supertitles both have plots that lend themselves to interpretations that illuminate the delicate relationship between man and nature. Both works are produced and directed by Robert Swedberg\, collaborating with Timothy Cheek and Steven McGhee\, Music Directors

SUMMARY:Performance:Howie Day
DESCRIPTION:Citing the likes of Jeff Buckley\, Radiohead\, and Dave Matthews among his influences\, Howie Day used their music as a basis for his own original direction. Howie\, like Patty Griffin\, was a product of Bangor\, Maine\, who made a splash in Boston's coffeehouse scene. He released his first album\, \"Australia\,\" in 2000. A lot has happened since then. Howie's music went in a rock direction\, and he got the attention of industry heavyweight Chris Blackwell and was signed to the major Epic label. He got a gold record for his album \"Stop the World Now\,\" and he's been romantically linked to Britney Spears. What hasn't changed is that he writes songs imbued with a wide-eyed sense of boundless emotion\, and clothes them in gorgeous arrangements that include innovative looping techniques.
