The performance will begin at 4 p.m. at U-M\u2019s famed Hill Auditorium at 825 N. University Ave. in Ann Arbor. It is open to the public with general admission seating. No tickets are required.\r\n\r\nThe LSO will perform three works by Russian composers: Alexander Borodin\u2019s symphonic poem In the Steppes of Central Asia, Sergei Rachmaninoff\u2019s Symphony No. 2 in E minor, and a symphonic poem by Dmitry Shostakovich, October, Op. 131. \r\n\r\nBorodin, trained as a chemist and physician in the mid-1800s, is a fitting composer for the LSO to play, as the orchestra\u2019s members are medical, health and science faculty, staff, students and alumni from throughout U-M. His musical tableau blends Russian and Asian influences. \r\n\r\nRachminoff\u2019s symphony \u2013 written in the early 1900s after he emerged from a long depression with the help of a psychiatrist \u2013 builds from a suspenseful opening into lush, beautiful melodies, all leading to a triumphant climax. \r\n\r\nShostakovich\u2019s rarely performed work, ostensibly written to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Russian revolution of 1917, weaves quotations and evocations of many of his subtly anti-Communist works together into a stirring whole.\r\n\r\nThe LSO will be led by music director Adrian Slywotzky, a graduate student in the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance\u2019s nationally known orchestral conducting program. He will be assisted by Kevin Fitzgerald, also a student in the program. \r\n\r\nThis is the final concert of the LSO\u2019s 14th season; it will be introduced by Janet A. Weiss, Ph.D., dean of the Rackham School of Graduate Studies. A number of the LSO\u2019s members are graduate students working toward doctoral degrees in fields ranging from neuroscience and biomedical engineering to theoretical ecology.\r\n. \r\nThe orchestra is part of the Gifts of Art program, which brings the world of art and music to the U-M Health System. The LSO gives members an outlet for their musical talents and a chance to interact with one another across academic disciplines and professions.
