DESCRIPTION:This exhibition combines two projects by graphic designer Heather Ault. \"4\,000 Years for Choice\" is an exhibition of posters about the age-old practice of abortion and contraception as a means to reclaim reproductive freedom as a deeply personal and life-sustaining act existing throughout all of human history. The \"Reproductive Roots\" series shines a bright light on the many voices from the abortion care and reproductive justice movements\, using vividly designed social media graphics and notecards to inspire conversations from a breadth of perspectives. \n\nHeather Ault is a visual artist\, pro-choice activist\, and independent scholar creating artwork to shift conversations about reproductive rights and justice. She uses vibrant graphics\, affirmative language\, and historical accounts to transform ugly discord into visual narratives that are beautiful and empowering.\n\nThe exhibition is presented by the Institute for Research on Women and Gender and the Women's Studies Department. It is cosponsored by the Program for Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice\, the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the Penny W. Stamps School of Art & Design. \n\n

DESCRIPTION:“Everywoman” is on display from 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Monday through Friday through May 23 at the Rackham Building\, fourth floor. The exhibit is presented in recognition and celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Center for the Education of Women. It seeks to explore and interpret the diverse ways women’s aspirations\, lives\, work and families are represented and expressed in the visual arts. Women are observed gazing out and looking within. Moods and qualities of being\, ideas and humor\, self regard and worry wind their way visually through this wide narrative exploration.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Michigan Ridges & Valleys: Acrylic on Canvas
DESCRIPTION:Rachael Van Dyke is eager to search for shapes of color and light that fall on the planes of the ridges and valleys of the land. These organic movements are revealed in her landscape paintings through juxtaposing patterns and colors of the farmlands and vineyards of Michigan. She received her Masters of Arts in Education degree from Kendall College of Art and Design and has taught K-12th grade art for 13 years. She is the recipient of three fellowships including the Japan Fulbright Memorial Fund\, Les Tapies Art Teacher Fellowship in Southern France and the Teacher Institute of Contemporary Art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Van Dyke is represented by the Ann Arbor Art Center\, as well as other galleries throughout Michigan.

DESCRIPTION:Having raised his two children near the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore\, Ken Scott has found much inspiration there. A self-taught photographer\, he started out with a 35mm camera\, heavy tripod\, either a 24 or 105 mm lens\, and a slow slide film (ASA 50). He is now climbing the digital ladder! Scott’s photography is the result of 20+ years of \"lots of patience\, recognizing the right place at the right time\, but not necessarily for the intended image”¦\" He shoots photographs around Leelanau County\, Michigan and stitches multiple images together to create vistas beyond what a single image can show.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Gifts of Art presents Paperweights & Studio Glass
DESCRIPTION:The American studio glass movement started in 1962 with glass workshops held at the Toledo Museum of Art. The workshops\, taught by Harvey Littleton along with scientist Dominick Labino\, introduced a small furnace built for working glass that made it possible for artists to work in independent studios. The studio glass movement quickly spread north to Michigan\, and in 1982\, a decision was made that studio glass would be the focus of the University of Michigan-Dearborn permanent art collection\, which is housed at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery. This exhibition is a portion of that collection\, spotlighting studio glass art by major artists working in the medium\, including Dominick Labino\, Marvin Lipofsky and Richard Ritter.

DESCRIPTION:Cre Fuller lives and works in Ypsilanti Michigan where he collects random scraps of metal and old kitchen appliances to turn into his one of a kind robot sculptures. He gathers these parts from trash bins to antique shops and everything in between. Fuller enjoys taking commonplace objects and up-cycling them into something new.

SUMMARY:Workshop / Seminar:Introduction to SPSS
DESCRIPTION:Corey Powell is a statistical consultant at CSCAR.\nFundamentals:\nThis portion introduces SPSS for Windows\, the menu and the help systems\, the three main types of files used\, and printing from within SPSS.  It then addresses defining variables\, attaching labels\, defining missing values\, and various ways to enter data into SPSS.  Finally\, it covers a brief introduction to obtaining frequency distributions\, descriptive statistics\, and cross tabulations of variables.\nWithin-Case Transformations:\nThis portion introduces data management capabilities\, including recoding variables (manual and automatic)\, computing new variables using formulas\, and counting occurrences of values within subjects.  Attention then turns to temporary transformations\, conditional processing of transformations\, and repetitive transformations.  SPSS syntax is also introduced.\nData Management with Multiple Files:\nThis portion begins with a discussion of subsetting data files by drawing samples\, selecting groups and excluding groups from analysis.  Then\, the two main methods of merging SPSS data files are covered: adding additional variables and adding additional cases.  Next\, creating aggregated data sets and applying aggregated data to individuals is covered.  Lastly\, importing and exporting data between SPSS and other statistical programs (Excel\, dBase\, SAS) is demonstrated.\nBasic Statistics and Graphics:\nThis portion covers basic exploratory procedures\, including obtaining percentiles\, frequencies\, descriptive statistics\, and cross tabulations. Basic comparative procedures including two-sample t-tests\, paired t-tests\, and one-way analysis of variance are also covered.  Then\, simple bivariate correlation analysis is introduced.  Participants are given a basic introduction to commonly used graphical procedures for displaying data\, including scatter plots\, bar graphs\, histograms\, and boxplots.

DESCRIPTION:Chris Hyndman’s installation\, “No-Touching Zone\,”   presents exciting new paintings that prompt us to think about the active surface of images in an age of digital saturation.   These highly inventive textured and patterned pictorial surfaces explore the way we see things\, from the inside and outside of paintings.  They also allude to Hyndman’s hard to extrapolate personal experience of being a Canadian living in the United States.

SUMMARY:Conference / Symposium:Robotic Fabrication in Architecture\, Art and Design
DESCRIPTION:ROB|ARCH has been initiated by the Association for Robots in Architecture as a new conference series on the use of robotic fabrication in architecture\, art\, and design\, closely linking industry with cutting-edge research institutions. In December 2012 the conference was hosted by its founders in Vienna\, Austria. In 2014 the conference travels to North America\, hosted by the University of Michigan Taubman College of Architecture and Urban Planning.\n\nContinuing with the previous theme of collaboration\, the conference seeks to bring together artists\, designers\, fabricators and industry leaders for the purpose of advancing the discourse surrounding robotic fabrication. Following on the success of ROB|ARCH 2012\, the conference will again present a series of workshops held at the University of Michigan\, Carnegie Mellon University\, and Princeton University\, aimed at exposing the advanced capabilities of applied robotic research. Following the workshops\, the conference will span two days at the University of Michigan Campus in Ann Arbor\, Michigan\, about an hour outside of Detroit\, the origin of robotics in North America. The internationally renowned publishing house Springer Wien/New York will publish and market the proceedings of the conference worldwide.\n\n\nIndustrial robots are the ultimate flexible manufacturing tools. Designers are taking this to heart\; contemporary research and production via robotic fabrication borrows from more mature manufacturing industries in order to accelerate the translation from “design to production”.  Whereas task-specific machine tools support the efficiencies of mass-production\, robotic workcells can be reconfigured\, allowing a generic machine to perform a wide range of tasks. What robots may lack in extreme precision\, they rapidly recover in “intelligence””¦.cooperative\, closed-loop  production cells now learn and adjust their technique in real-time. At the other end of the scale\, robots are emerging as in-situ construction tools\, achieving the dexterity to perform an active role in direct\, on site fabrication challenges.

SUMMARY:Presentation:Perspectives on Engineering and Disabilities: Clive D'Souza and David Chesney 
DESCRIPTION:Clive D'Souza is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Industrial and Operations Engineering. Dr. D'Souza conducts research in ergonomics and human factors to address human performance\, safety and inclusive (universal) design concerns in human-in-the-loop systems analysis and design. He has extensive experience in the design and conduct of experiments to evaluate and model performance\, behavior and coping strategies of people with diverse functional abilities including wheelchair users\, older adult users of walking aids\, blind and visually impaired users for environmental design applications. \n\nDavid Chesney is a lecturer in Computer Science and Engineering. \nHis sections of ENGR 100 are generally dedicated to \"Gaming for the Greater Good\,\" in which students develop video games with a focus on social good. \nIn 2010\, some of his EECS 481 students developed an iPad application to enable people with cerebral palsy to send email. His students have also developed video games using Microsoft Kinect hardware with an intended therapeutic value for children on the autistic spectrum. \n\nThis presentation is part of a year-long series of events for the Services for Students with Disabilities 40th Anniversary.

SUMMARY:Exhibition:Three Michigan Architects: Part 2–Robert Metcalf
DESCRIPTION:Robert Metcalf’s domestic and commercial buildings represent some of the most important and recognizable modern architecture in Michigan. Born in 1923\, Metcalf is a native of Ohio. He began his education at the University of Michigan in 1941 but his studies were halted during World War II. After serving in Europe\, Metcalf returned to Ann Arbor and finished his degree in 1950. Upon graduation\, he worked as an apprentice to George B. Brigham and began teaching Architecture at the University of Michigan. Metcalf began his own practice in 1953 and completed over 120 projects Ann Arbor and the Detroit Metro area. \nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThis exhibition presents 13 domestic projects that span his six-decade-long career from 1953-2008\, highlighting his straightforward design aesthetic\, featuring many of his iconic flat-roofed houses. Each project selected exemplifies Metcalf’s mid-century modern architectural vocabulary that results in functional\, minimalist spaces for living.\n\nThree Michigan Architects: Part 2–Metcalf is the second in a series of three consecutive exhibitions\, with subsequent presentation of domestic work by George Brigham (July 19–October 12\, 2014). Part 1 of the series presented the work of David Osler (December 21\, 2013–March 30\, 2013). The series will culminate in Fall 2014 with a symposium\, as well as the publication of Three Michigan Architects: Osler\, Metcalf\, and Brigham–both of which will explore the importance of this circle of Ann Arbor-based architects\, situating their regional body of domestic work into the larger context of modern architecture in the U.S. that developed on the East Coast and West Coast from the 1930s–1980s.\n

SUMMARY:Performance:Gifts of Art presents Classical Violin & Piano
DESCRIPTION:Detroit native Gabe Bolkosky has performed across the U.S. and abroad\, most notably at Carnegie Hall in 2008 in the premiere of Fredric Rzewski's \"Natural Things\".  At U-M\, he earned a bachelor's degree in violin performance and a master's in chamber music\, as well as studying improvisation at the master's level. Bolkosky has worked with young musicians in most of the 50 states as well as parts of Asia. Pianist Michele Cooker has appeared on PBS and live broadcasts for WFMT radio in Chicago and the CBC in Canada. She teaches piano at the Kerrytown Concert House and is a member of the Board of Directors. Together Bolkosky and Cooker present a stylistically varied program with informative and fun commentary from the stage.
