Conceived in the 1950s by architects Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, Chandigarh\u2019s controversial modernist architecture includes original pieces of furniture created specifically for the building\u2019s interiors. Recently these pieces have appeared at auction houses around the world, commanding record prices. Starting with Chandigarh furniture in the present, the film begins in New York apartments, London townhouses, Belgian villas, and Paris salons of avid collectors. From there, it moves backward to the furniture\u2019s sale at auction, preview exhibitions, and photography for auction catalogues, to restoration, cargo shipping containers, and Indian ports\u2014ending finally in Chandigarh, a city in a state of entropy. \r\n\r\n On October 19, 2013, Siegel auctioned Provenance at Christie\u2019s in London, turning the film into another object at auction, inseparable from the market it depicts. Lot 248, a second film, captures the auction of Provenance, becoming a mirror of the first, repeating and completing the circuit of design and art that define speculative markets.\r\n\r\nAmie Siegel was born in 1974 in Chicago. Her work has been exhibited internationally at MoMA\/PS1, Walker Art Center, Hayward Gallery, Whitney Museum of American Art, KW Berlin, ICA Boston, and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart. Screenings include Cannes Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, New York Film Festival, The Museum of Modern Art, The National Gallery of Art, and the Harvard Film Archive, among many other museums and cinematheques. The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.\r\n\r\nWhen a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dal\u00ed and Philippe Halsman; Frida Kahlo and Manuel \u00c1lvarez Bravo; and Georgia O\u2019Keeffe and Ansel Adams. For UMMA\u2019s exhibition, Paramodel will create a new installation derived from their most famous series, paramodelic-graffiti. In a mesmerizing network of blue-colored model railroads that fill flat surfaces in and beyond the gallery, the installation will transgress the boundaries of space, media, and art production, collapsing the distinction between gallery and street; between two-dimensional drawing and three-dimensional object; and between creator and spectator. The evidence of his time in the writer\u2019s chair is clear in the dense, lovely prose of Surrounded. The album\u2019s liner notes include text-embedded lyrics, a technique Buckner employed on his earlier albums Since and Impasse, but this marks the first time he used the songs\u2019 extended story to construct the album\u2019s overall view and track sequence.\r\n\r\nThrowing out the \u201ctricks and trades\u201d of his previous efforts, Buckner hunkered down at home and chose a few unfamiliar pieces of gear\u2014a Suzuki QChord electronic autoharp and an Electro-Harmonix POG2 pedal\u2014to create basic tracks and open up more sonic possibilities. \u201cThe best outcomes happen sometimes when I\u2019m unfamiliar with the tool that I\u2019m using (imagine MacGyver wearing a dog cone).\u201d\r\n\r\nThe now-infamous process of recording and re-recording Our Blood left him a bit gun-shy, so this time, Buckner decided to get each song out of his house as soon as it was finished to avoid the contamination of over-thinking. After hearing an interview with famed producer Tucker Martine, Buckner found a destination for his songs: \u201cTucker understood the urgency in me to tie the whole thing up before I fell into the same trap that I\u2019d had finishing Our Blood and was generous enough to move other commitments around to fit Surrounded in. When I had finally finished Our Blood, I felt like I\u2019d just survived a stroll through a mine field.
