The lecture will be held in the Garden Level Auditorium within the Rachel Upjohn Building at 4250 Plymouth Road in Ann Arbor. \r\n\r\nAbout The Jack and Nancy Westman Lectureship in Family and Community Psychiatry:\r\n \r\nJack C. Westman, M.D. is a Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health and president of Wisconsin Cares, Inc., an organization that promotes public policies to enhance the well-being of childrearing families. Dr. Westman received a BS, MD, and MS from the University of Michigan and was an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Michigan Medical School before joining the University of Wisconsin in 1965. \r\n\r\nNancy K. Westman received a B.A. from the University of Michigan and devoted her volunteer life to supporting the well-being of young persons and their families. She was co-chair of Project Understanding, a Mississippi-Wisconsin program that began in 1968; treasurer of Canyon Scholars, a Mexican-U.S. scholarship program for Tarahumara Indians that began in 1999; and treasurer of the Bethel Parish Shop.\r\n\r\nThe Westman\u2019s endowment gift to the University of Michigan Medical School was inspired by their lifelong commitment to child advocacy, family well-being, children\u2019s and parents\u2019 rights, and public policy. This annual lectureship was established to promote interest in the actual life circumstances of young people \u2013 the families, neighborhoods, and communities in which they live.\r\n\r\nAbout Dr. Dishion\u2019s Lecture:\r\n\u201cTranslational Research on Family Interventions for Child and Adolescent Problem Behavior: From Developmental Research to Community Change\u201d\r\n \r\nThomas Dishion, Ph.D.\r\nThis lecture will provide an overview of a 30 year program of research that began with longitudinal research on the development of antisocial behavior in children and adolescence, and has progressed to the prevention and treatment of various forms of problem behavior in childhood and adolescence. The model building approach to translational research will be highlighted as it applies to explaining individual difference in child and adolescent problem behavior, and most recently, as a guide to implementing interventions found to effectively prevent and treat antisocial behavior. Future directions in translation research are suggested, including the integration of biology, the brain and environmental factors in affecting public health benefits to children and families.\r\n\r\nDr. Dishion\u2019s expertise is in translational research on relationship dynamics associated with child, adolescent and young adult mental health and competence. His research focuses on peer family and romantic relationship dynamics underlying the development of psychopathology and competence. His work uses various methods including longitudinal studies, observational and social neuroscience techniques such as high-density array EEG. Conceived in the 1950s by architects Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret, Chandigarh\u2019s controversial modernist architecture includes original pieces of furniture created specifically for the building\u2019s interiors. Recently these pieces have appeared at auction houses around the world, commanding record prices. Starting with Chandigarh furniture in the present, the film begins in New York apartments, London townhouses, Belgian villas, and Paris salons of avid collectors. From there, it moves backward to the furniture\u2019s sale at auction, preview exhibitions, and photography for auction catalogues, to restoration, cargo shipping containers, and Indian ports\u2014ending finally in Chandigarh, a city in a state of entropy. \r\n\r\n On October 19, 2013, Siegel auctioned Provenance at Christie\u2019s in London, turning the film into another object at auction, inseparable from the market it depicts. Lot 248, a second film, captures the auction of Provenance, becoming a mirror of the first, repeating and completing the circuit of design and art that define speculative markets.\r\n\r\nAmie Siegel was born in 1974 in Chicago. Her work has been exhibited internationally at MoMA\/PS1, Walker Art Center, Hayward Gallery, Whitney Museum of American Art, KW Berlin, ICA Boston, and the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart. Screenings include Cannes Film Festival, Berlin Film Festival, New York Film Festival, The Museum of Modern Art, The National Gallery of Art, and the Harvard Film Archive, among many other museums and cinematheques. The sixteen photographs included in this exhibition speak to an especially charged collaboration between photographer and model in that they are all portraits of artists.\r\n\r\nWhen a photographer is faced with a subject who is so thoroughly invested in artistic representation, how might this impact his or her own photographic aesthetic? In this suite of remarkable photographs, we witness different manifestations of this phenomenon at work. For example, we see results ranging from the surreal to the seemingly straightforward through encounters between Salvador Dal\u00ed and Philippe Halsman; Frida Kahlo and Manuel \u00c1lvarez Bravo; and Georgia O\u2019Keeffe and Ansel Adams. Dr. Engel will be discussing a recent paper that examines the bases for federal allocation, among the various states, of the greenhouse gas emissions reductions needed to meet federal air pollution standards under the Clean Air Act. Because of the Obama Administration\u2019s intent to exploit the climate change-related regulatory opportunities available under the Act, including those available under the Act\u2019s cooperative federalism provisions, this allocation question will continue as an important issue to federal and state environmental regulators, regulated entities and the public. The paper concludes that recent rulemakings of the Obama Administration reveal an evolving new approach to the federal government\u2019s role under the cooperative federalism framework seen in the Clean Air Act, one in which the federal government assists states in addressing the collective action problems presented by interstate and global pollution problems. Because the new approach relies upon agency statutory interpretations, however, the permanence of this new approach will depend in large part upon the Administration\u2019s success in obtaining judicial deference to its statutory interpretations.\r\n\r\nKirsten Engel is the Charles E. Ares Professor of Law at the James E. Rogers College of Law at the University of Arizona where she teaches and researches in the areas of environmental and administrative law with a particular emphasis upon federalism and the role of the courts in fostering policy responses to climate change. Since 2013, Engel has been serving as the Law College\u2019s Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Engel is the co-author of an environmental law textbook, Environmental Law: A Conceptual And Pragmatic Approach (2d ed.), and numerous book chapters and articles. Her work appears in journals such as the UCLA Law Review Discourse, the Minnesota Law Review, and the Ecology Law Quarterly. This account centers on the role of the concrete block apartment buildings that came to dominate the landscape throughout state-socialist eastern Europe and the aesthetic styles that emerged in opposition to it. Discontent with the state socialist regime became inseparable from discontent with its modernist housing forms, and a shared \u201corganicist\u201d aesthetic emerged in the way families furnished their homes inside these rectilinear buildings. This organicist aesthetic included an affection for natural materials as well as \u201cfolk\u201d artifacts, weathered by time or crafted with traditional methods. But far from being aligned with a backwards-looking nationalism, the style united elements of peasant artisanal traditions with the informality and open qualities of modern design.\r\n\r\nAfter the regime change of 1989, the \u201cfolk\u201d elements of this style became intensely politicized by state nationalism. A professionally-designed \u201corganicist architecture\u201d became the symbol of the newly independent nation-state and the only architectural style appropriate for new churches. Organicist d\u00e9cor, meanwhile, was transformed from do-it-yourself production into upscale commodities purchased by the emerging middle classes. On the one hand, this organicist aesthetic has encompassed divergent political orientations, including populist right, a neoliberal left, and environmentalist alternatives. On the other, the continuing attachments to such organicism contribute powerful constraints on the kinds of politics possible in Hungary today.\r\n\r\nKrisztina Feh\u00e9rv\u00e1ry, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan, received her Ph.D. from The University of Chicago. This presentation demonstrates that, whilst music as a sensory-perceptual experience cannot be analyzed via linguistic means, aesthetic and cultural concepts written about music can. In Western music, composers have generally continued the tradition of \u201cdescribing\u201d how their works should be performed, engaging in the use of musical terms such as affettuoso (\u2018tenderly\u2019 in Italian), etc. Chinese musical concepts present a compelling focal point of study since many have been in use for several millennia. These concepts not only provide a window through which to tap into Chinese music, they are also \u201ccultural key words\u2026which reflect the core values\u201d of Chinese culture (following Wierzbicka 1991: 333). As our linguistic tool for analysis, this study adopts the Natural Semantic Metalanguage, as advanced by Wierzbicka and Goddard. Analyzed meanings of selected Chinese musical concepts illustrate how, why and in what respects these concepts attest to important aesthetic and cultural values in Chinese.\r\n\r\nAdrian Tien is an assistant professor in the Department of Chinese Studies, National University of Singapore.
