Feel free to #EndItMovement so everyone knows that you stand against slavery.

The End It Movement is a day that is meant to shine a light on the approximately 27 million men, women, and children who are enslaved around the world today. This includes other countries, as well as places like Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Detroit. Slavery can take many forms including, but not limited to, forced domestic servitude, forced sex work, or forced manual labor. For more information, visit the website provided below.",

Clark’s exquisite, hand-cut paper creations highlights work from his two collections, “Chasing the Cherubim” and “Fiery Furnace”. Clark explores themes of changing human experience and consciousness and the evolution of authority though images of these winged beings and other manifestations. A former U-M physician, Clark, a.k.a. Dr. Snowflake, has been exhibiting his snowflakes at U-M Hospitals since 1987.",

The portraits incorporate portions of the men’s military records in the artwork, and a mini-biography of the soldier, written by the artist, accompanies each portrait.
While Chicagoan Lisa S. Goesling has spent her life creating art, she discovered scratchboards (boards made of clay and India ink) while undergoing a cancer diagnosis in 2006. The idea that adversity teaches us to turn the negative into a positive is a great analogy for transforming these black boards into thriving works of art. Her past careers in graphic design and art direction continue to influence her art by incorporating the fundamentals of design, such as composition, pattern, texture, contrast, line, etc. Using nature as her muse, Goesling scratches fine lines into a layer of ink until meticulous images appear in the clay.
Our understandings of gender have shifted dramatically in recent decades. No longer is gender a matter of an immutable binary, or a set of predetermined preferences and predilections. This exhibition--the first of its kind--both celebrates and interrogates the visual aspects of the re- imaging of gender.

Re-imaging Gender features the work of 15 promising artists who take on one of the most important challenges facing contemporary art: how to render the modern spectrum of gender, going beyond the simple male/female binary to include a wide variety of identities and sexualities.

The Re-imaging artists, MFA students enrolled at Michigan and CIC universities (Big 10, plus Chicago), responded to an IRWG-issued Call for Art. The result is an exhibition of 17 works in a variety of media, including photography, paint, lithograph, mixed media, and video, which reflect new understandings of gender.

The exhibit will be displayed at the Lane Hall Gallery, a space shared by IRWG and the U-M Department of Women’s Studies, from January 15 - June 26, 2015.
World War I was far from over in the Middle East when the Germany officially surrendered to the Entente forces on 11 November 1918. As the European colonial powers sought to divide up the territory of the multiethnic Ottoman Empire, the forces of Turkish nationalist leader Mustafa Kemal fought a war of independence claiming victory and announcing the establishment of a Turkish Republic on 29 October 1923. It was in the context of continued conflict that University of Michigan Professor of Archaeology Francis Willey Kelsey (1858-1927) traveled to the Near East. Accompanied by his wife Isabelle (Mary) Badger Kelsey (1867-1944), his fifteen-year old son Easton Trowbridge Kelsey (b. 1904) and University of Michigan staff photographer George Robert Swain (1866-1947), Kelsey visited a region of the world that not only had experienced four-years of destructive war and devastating famine, but also was the site of genocide.

The initial mission was to collect ancient manuscripts that were destined to disappear in the post war chaos. To initiate the mission, Prof. Kelsey wrote an urgent letter to Miss Belle da Costa Greene of the Pierpont Library on October 3, 1918. He solicited her support for an immediate expedition into the aftermath of war for “unless peace comes soon enough to save the remnants” of Greek and Armenian society, who have “been practically exterminated in certain large regions of Asia Minor” no record of these Christian communities would remain. It was “now or never” he writes that ancient and medieval manuscripts may be purchased from “unappreciative hands” for a token price. It was now or never that Greek, Syriac, Persian and Armenian manuscripts could be easily picked up and the “possession of these, and their proper preservation, will be a gain to science of inestimable value.” Little did Kelsey know that his travels to the Near East would also become a moment of witnessing. Kelsey’s diaries and Swain’s photographs on exhibit leave an important historical record that links them personally and the University of Michigan to one of the largest humanitarian efforts in history.

Organizers: Kathryn Babayan, associate professor of history and Near Eastern studies, U-M; and Melanie Tanielian, assistant professor of history, U-M.",

This live painting performance is an extension of a documentary film created by Makengele and Michel titled Les Fantômes de Lovanium (Ghosts of Lovanium) that captures the reactions and conversations of students and other onlookers as they gather to observe Makengele while he paints in public on the campus of the University of Kinshasa in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Come join Makengele and Michel to witness the creation of Makengele’s newest painting and interact with the artists. Over the course of a few days, Makengele will repeat the performance in Ann Arbor and produce a new painting in different locations around campus including the Institute for the Humanities on February 20, Gallery DAAS on February 23-24, and UMMA on February 25-26.
The Institute for the Humanities is pleased to present the first comprehensive, curated exhibition of the work of Alison Bechdel, cartoonist, graphic memoirist, and 2014 McArthur "Genius." Bechdel's work explores the overlap of the personal and the political, "using the interplay of word and image to weave sophisticated narratives." The musical adaptation of her acclaimed graphic memoir Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic, which originated at the Public Theater, opens on Broadway in April 2015.

"Alison Bechdel’s comic strip Dykes To Watch Out For has become a countercultural institution among lesbians and discerning non-lesbians all over the planet. And her more recent, darkly humorous graphic memoirs about her family have forged an unlikely intimacy with an even wider range of readers.

Bechdel self-syndicated Dykes to Watch Out For for twenty-five years, from 1983 to 2008. The award-winning generational chronicle has been called “one of the pre-eminent oeuvres in the comics genre, period.” (Ms. magazine)

In 2006 she published Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic. Time magazine named it the Best Book of 2006, describing the tightly architected investigation into her closeted bisexual father’s suicide “a masterpiece about two people who live in the same house but different worlds, and their mysterious debts to each other.” Fun Home was a finalist for a National Book Critics Circle Award. It has been adapted into a musical by the playwright Lisa Kron and the composer Jeanine Tesori. It opened Off-Broadway at the Public Theater in September 2013 and ran through several extensions. It opens on Broadway in April 2015.

In her work, Bechdel is preoccupied with the overlap of the political and the personal spheres, the relationship of the self to the world outside. Her 2012 memoir Are You My Mother? A Comic Drama delved into not just her relationship with her own mother, but the theories of the 20th-century British psychoanalyst Donald Winnicott. In the New York Times Book Review, Katie Roiphe wrote, “There’s a lucidity to Bechdel’s work that in certain ways … bears more resemblance to poetry than to the dense, wordy introspection of most prose memoirs. The book delivers lightning bolts of revelation, maps of insight and visual snapshots of family entanglements in a singularly beautiful style.”

Alison’s comics have appeared in The New Yorker, Slate, McSweeney’s, The New York Times Book Review, and Granta. She received a 2012 Guggenheim Fellowship.

Alison lives in Vermont, where she is a Marsh Professor at Large at the University of Vermont."
Guy Michael Davis and Katie Parker
(collaboratively working under the name Future Retrieval)

The objects presented merge the strengths of our studio practice – a dark vein backed by a historical current. Ornament and detail collide with a fascination of taxidermy and natural order. Each object contains a history, reaching back and highlighting ideals of time and labor.
Three-dimensional scans and photographs have been rapid prototyped, processed in the studio, and molded into porcelain mimicking the world of European decorative arts. Inspired also by German animal sculptures and cut silhouettes, we are using digital translation to both highlight and transform these details that fascinate us. The interest in new technologies and industrial methods is that each piece is handmade, but maintains the record of a computer driven interpretation. Our intention is to make art objects that reference design and are held together by craft.

Bio
Future Retrieval

Guy Michael Davis was born in 1978 and raised in Bartlesville, OK. Katie Parker was born in 1980 in Jonesboro Arkansas, and grew up in Plano, Texas. They both attended the Kansas City Art Institute from 1999-2003 and received BFA degrees in ceramics.
Katie went straight to graduate school at The Ohio State University from 2003-2005, Guy followed suit three years later from 2006-2008. Both Katie and Guy received MFA degrees in ceramics.
Currently, Katie is an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati, running the ceramics department. Guy works for multiple designers across the country, and is an adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati. For several years, they have also been collaborating together, making objects that combine new technology, porcelain, and good craft. The objects merge the strengths of their individual studio practice – a dark vein backed by a historical current. They have exhibited both nationally and internationally, with recent shows in New York City, Jingdezhen China, Cardiff Wales, Philadelphia, Kansas City, and Tempe Arizona. This summer they were both artists in residence at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art in Omaha, NE.
For the third installation of the Flip Your Field series, UMMA invites Georgios Skiniotis, Professor of Biological Chemistry at U-M’s Life Sciences Institute and Medical School, to curate an exhibition from the Museum’s collection of three-dimensional objects.
As a scientist, Skiniotis creates three-dimensional models of cellular components by combining their magnified shadows or projections viewed from different perspectives. This type of study inevitably raises questions regarding the cognition of the objects around us—how, in the absence of perspective, are we to read elements like color, contrast variation, and depth of field in the dark outlines of objects? How do we make the cognitive connection between a two-dimensional shadow and the three-dimensional object that casts it? How many two-dimensional projections are needed for us to understand what we are looking at, and at what level of detail?
This exhibition poses such questions by juxtaposing three-dimensional objects from the Museum’s collection with two-dimensional projections created by Skiniotis using a similar process with which he creates models of cellular components. The presentation aims to provide a glimpse of the impressions of the selected works from varied directions through interplay with their own projections and our minds.
The UMMA Flip Your Field series asks noted University of Michigan faculty members to consider artwork outside their field of specialization in order to guest curate an exhibition using works from UMMA's renowned collection. The UMMA Flip Your Field series is generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.",

This exhibition, consisting of 19 photographs from UMMA’s collection, was inspired by the presence of the Frank Gehry chair made of cardboard in UMMA’s Design Gallery, and of and the need to address how artists from different cultures (present-day America and communist Czechoslovakia) view a commodity as common as paper.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L.
For more than 25 years, Los Angeles-based collectors Alan Hergott and Curt Shepard have built a world-class collection of contemporary art that is focused on men and male identity as its subject matter. This exhibition features works from their vast holdings in photography. Guest curator Mario Codognato examines the lives of men in contemporary Western societies—with all their contradictions—through themes of competition and solidarity, confrontation with identity, and diverse explorations of the body and sexuality (as both sign and experience). Together, these thematic groups form a fictional, somewhat idealized, tale in 13 chapters, inviting viewers to reflect upon their own stories as well.

Drawing upon the Hergott Shepard collection as well as select works gifted by the collectors to the Hammer Museum at UCLA, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA), the exhibition will include more than 60 works by some of the most important names in late 20th and early 21st century art, including Doug Aitken, John Baldessari, Matthew Barney, Rineke Dijkstra, Gilbert and George, Nan Goldin, Robert Mapplethorpe, Catherine Opie, Herb Ritts, Thomas Ruff, Andres Serrano, and Wolfgang Tillmans.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the University of Michigan Office of the Provost and the University of Michigan Health System.
This exhibition celebrates the upcoming 2015 opening of the new Medicinal Garden at the University of Michigan’s Matthaei Botanical Gardens. The earliest botanical garden at the University was a pharmaceutical garden established in 1897 just off the Diag, at the heart of Central Campus. The new garden, developed in partnership with the College of Pharmacy and Medical School faculty, will continue that legacy, aiming to explore the botanical origins of historical and current medicines, and to promote a better understanding of the profound relationship between plants and human health.
Preceding the garden’s opening, this exhibition at UMMA will feature rarely seen archival plant specimens, deposited by pharmaceutical companies at the University Herbarium, along with newer herbarium specimens that reveal the captivating forms of these medicinal plants. These dried and pressed plant specimens will be accompanied by the presentation of the few remaining historic images of the original pharmaceutical garden, as well as a drawing of the layout of new garden at Matthaei, which is uniquely organized according to the systems of the human body that these medicinal plants are used to treat.
This exhibition is part of the U-M Collections Collaborations series, co-organized by and presented at UMMA and designed to showcase the renowned and diverse collections at the University of Michigan. The U-M Collections Collaborations series is generously supported by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.
Speaker: Michael D. Kennedy, professor of sociology and international studies, Brown University

As I write in Globalizing Knowledge: Intellectuals, Universities, and Publics in Transformation, “globalizing knowledge refers to the process by which distant regions’ knowledgeabilities are implicated in the particular cultures fusing those understandings. The form of globalizing knowledge will vary given the different historical and institutional contexts that shape such learning. Globalizing knowledge is, therefore, relationally composed. The sociology of globalizing knowledge concerns the conditions, manners, and implications of that fusion.”

Poland, Kosova, and Ukraine, and the University of Michigan itself figure prominently in that book. In this presentation, I consider the ways in which their presence shapes the particular fusion of horizons apparent in my approach to globalizing knowledge. In particular, I link my approaches to solidarity, difference, knowledge networks and public engagement to my learning in these four contexts.

Michael D. Kennedy (@Prof_Kennedy) is professor of sociology and international studies at Brown University. Throughout his career, Kennedy has addressed intellectuals and professionals in East European social movements, national identification, and systemic change. For the last fifteen years, he has also studied the sociology of public knowledge, global transformations, and cultural politics, focusing most recently on the European Union, energy security, universities, and social movements. Globalizing Knowledge: Intellectuals, Universities, and Publics in Transformation was recently published by Stanford University Press. Kennedy was the University of Michigan’s first vice provost for international affairs, in addition to being director of an institute and five centers and programs at U-M. He has also served as the Howard R. Swearer Director of the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University.
Nummer veertien, home, Dutch artist Guido van der Werve’s 54-minute film, weaves together three stories of journeys away from home: the death of Frédéric Chopin in Paris and his sister’s quest to bring the composer’s heart back to his native Poland for burial; Van der Werve’s own quest to retrace, in reverse, the route of Chopin’s heart in a three-week, thousand-mile trek of biking, running, and swimming; and the story of Alexander the Great, a traveling warrior who is one of Van der Werve’s personal heroes.

The film explores themes that are common in Van der Werve’s work: extreme physical and mental endurance, man’s struggle with the intensity of nature, the interplay of history and geography, the power of melancholy, and the solitary traveler. The artist’s signature sensibility—simultaneously surreal and deadpan—is accentuated in the film by the full orchestra that accompanies him on every stage of his journey. Van der Werve spent a year composing the film’s score, a classical requiem for forty voices and twenty strings, and the film’s structure mirrors that of the requiem: three movements of four acts apiece, with each act introduced by title shots to reinforce this organizational system. The tripartite framework underscores the three legs of Van der Werve’s personal triathlon and the three odysseys that intersect and inform one another throughout the film.

Lead support for this exhibition is provided by the Herbert W. and Susan L. Johe Endowment.
Speaker: Hae Kwon Kim, Professor of Biblical Studies, Soongsil University

This lecture will be about how the Korean church has been distorted and tamed into a Neo-liberalistic, market-totalitarian system that lost its prophetic and subversive stance toward the status-quo in the early 1990s, amid the collapse of the USSR and the Eastern Bloc. The Korean church began to make the audacious assertion that any socially-geared Christian messages should be scrutinized because they could be stemming from an already falsified communist ideology, so assured of the triumph of the free market and democracy over socially-oriented states and their communist ideology, when in fact the USSR and its Eastern Europe allies were undergoing a regime change for many reasons.

It is against such a background that the Korean church distanced itself from the rich prophetic tradition of the Old Testament and expelled prophetic voices from Korean society itself. The disappearance of prophetic voice from Korea society in turn represented a serious disservice to Korea in many ways.

First, through its expulsion of a prophetic voice, the Korean church has deprived itself of a self-critical and self-correcting capacity. Korean Christianity has rapidly changed into little more than a private religious company, whose goal is to recruit as many clients as possible, clients who wish to enter the promised paradise-based afterlife. Little wonder that Korean society was appalled at the abnormal changes in spiritual leadership at several mega-churches. The Korean church found itself crippled by its own corruption as it attempted to play a prophetic role in criticisms against the larger, secular world, because the Korean church itself had been disqualified as a prophetic voice.

Second, the Korean church allowed many capitalist principles(competition, incentives for evangelistic performance, investment of tithes on stock markets) to erode its spiritual foundations, especially by awarding individual Christians who excelled at recruiting nonbelievers to the Church. The Korean church made no effort to curb an inhumane and apathetic neo-liberal global economy from dismantling a democratic Korean society.

Third, Korean society is certainly not benefiting from the Korean Christianity because the latter has forfeited its paramount charge as Light of the World and Salt for the World. Any society without a transcendental and self-referential checks is likely to fall apart because it cannot prevent its own disintegration into an inhumane and non-sustainable Mammon-dominated Market.

Hae Kwon Kim is head chaplain and associate professor of biblical studies in the College of Humanities at Soongsil University in Seoul, Korea. An ordained Presbyterian minister, Kim is known for his exegeses of much of the Old Testament and translation of several commentaries on the Bible. He is chief editor of the International Journal of Christian Studies and the author of Modern Humanity and the Bible (Seoul: Soongsil University Press, 2007) as well as Reading "The Book of Acts" from a Theology of God's Kingdom, Volumes 1 and 2 (Seoul: The Blessed People) among many others. Kim received his BA from Seoul National University, his MDiv/ThM from Presbyterian College and Theological Seminary, and his ThM and PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary.",

Jarzombek works on a wide range of historical topics from the 12th century to the modern era with a particular focus on nineteenth and twentieth century aesthetics, and the history and theory of architecture.
He is one of the country’s leading advocates for global history and has published several books and articles on that topic, including the ground-breaking textbook entitled A Global History of Architecture (Wiley Press, 2006) with co-author Vikram Prakash and with the noted illustrator Francis D.K. Ching. He is the sole author of Architecture of First Societies: A Global Perspective (Wiley Press, 2013), which is a sensitive synthesis of first society architecture through time and includes custom-made drawings, maps and photographs. The book builds on the latest research in archeological and anthropological knowledge while at the same time challenging some of their received perspectives.
Ebola. Measles. Flu. Three contagious diseases have captured the public’s attention in recent months – and continue to spread.

One more epidemic will enter the spotlight this month -- at least in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Thankfully, it will be contained to one location, the Michigan Theater, on one day: Wednesday, Feb. 25

That’s when the 2011 movie “Contagion” will be shown starting at 7 p.m., as part of the theater’s Science on Screen series. The showing is sponsored by the U-M Medical School’s Center for the History of Medicine.

Following the movie, the audience will hear from a real-life contagion fighter, Capt. Martin Cetron, M.D., director of the Division of Global Migration and Quarantine at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, or CDC.

The movie tracks the progress of an epidemic of an unknown airborne virus, and dramatizes the race to contain it and the fear it inspires. The Warner Brothers film stars Marion Cotillard, Matt Damon, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Kate Winslet and Laurence Fishburne.

The work done by Cetron and his team at CDC may not have a soundtrack or special effects, but it is crucial to preventing the introduction and spread of infectious diseases into the U.S. and preventing illness and death among those who travel here as immigrants, refugees, migrant workers, and international travelers.

In his 23 years at CDC, Cetron has led a number of domestic and international
outbreak investigations and responses -- most recently, efforts to prevent the Ebola virus from spreading from nations in west Africa to the U.S.

Cetron will be introduced by Howard Markel, M.D., Ph.D., director of the U-M Center for the History of Medicine and a medical historian who has studied epidemics throughout the centuries, and steps societies have taken to control them.

Some of Markel’s work, including a major project on the 1918 flu pandemic, has been funded by the CDC. He also serves on the Presidential Commission for the Study of Bioethical Issues, which recently reported on the lessons of the Ebola crisis.

Science on Screen gets support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and Coolidge Corner Theatre. For information, visit http://www.michtheater.org/shows/contagion .

To buy tickets, which are $10, $8 for students, seniors and veterans, and $7.50 for Michigan Theater members, visit http://umhealth.me/UMcontagion.
In recent weeks, the possibility of a European-wide and even global war has once again emerged as an imminent danger. French President Francois Hollande has warned of the risk of "total war" in Europe. The leading German magazine Der Speigel published an article earlier this month under the headline, "The Nuclear specter returns." Former Soviet Union President Michael Gorbachev has spoken of the possibility of "World War III."

The population of the world is being thrust to the brink of a global catastrophe over the crisis in Ukraine, which has pitched a right-wing, pro-NATO regime in Kiev against Russia-backed separatists in the east. The Obama Administration is currently considering providing military arms to the Ukrainian government, which would be seen as a military provocation directed against Russia. Whatever the immediate outcome of negotiations between the different sides, Eastern Europe is a geopolitical powder keg.

What has brought the world again to the brink of world conflagration, this time with nuclear weapons? The basic cause of world war lies in the imperialist system, and responsibility for the current crisis lies squarely with the major capitalist powers, above all the United States.

This meeting will discuss the historical background of the crisis in Ukraine and the underlying strategic, political and economic imperatives that lie behind the reemergence of the specter of world war.",
