As the European colonial powers sought to divide up the territory of the multiethnic Ottoman Empire, the forces of Turkish nationalist leader Mustafa Kemal fought a war of independence claiming victory and announcing the establishment of a Turkish Republic on 29 October 1923. It was in the context of continued conflict that University of Michigan Professor of Archaeology Francis Willey Kelsey (1858-1927) traveled to the Near East. Accompanied by his wife Isabelle (Mary) Badger Kelsey (1867-1944), his fifteen-year old son Easton Trowbridge Kelsey (b. 1904) and University of Michigan staff photographer George Robert Swain (1866-1947), Kelsey visited a region of the world that not only had experienced four-years of destructive war and devastating famine, but also was the site of genocide.\r\n\r\nThe initial mission was to collect ancient manuscripts that were destined to disappear in the post war chaos. To initiate the mission, Prof. Kelsey wrote an urgent letter to Miss Belle da Costa Greene of the Pierpont Library on October 3, 1918. He solicited her support for an immediate expedition into the aftermath of war for \u201cunless peace comes soon enough to save the remnants\u201d of Greek and Armenian society, who have \u201cbeen practically exterminated in certain large regions of Asia Minor\u201d no record of these Christian communities would remain. It was \u201cnow or never\u201d he writes that ancient and medieval manuscripts may be purchased from \u201cunappreciative hands\u201d for a token price. It was now or never that Greek, Syriac, Persian and Armenian manuscripts could be easily picked up and the \u201cpossession of these, and their proper preservation, will be a gain to science of inestimable value.\u201d Little did Kelsey know that his travels to the Near East would also become a moment of witnessing. Ornament and detail collide with a fascination of taxidermy and natural order. Each object contains a history, reaching back and highlighting ideals of time and labor.\r\nThree-dimensional scans and photographs have been rapid prototyped, processed in the studio, and molded into porcelain mimicking the world of European decorative arts. Inspired also by German animal sculptures and cut silhouettes, we are using digital translation to both highlight and transform these details that fascinate us. The interest in new technologies and industrial methods is that each piece is handmade, but maintains the record of a computer driven interpretation. Our intention is to make art objects that reference design and are held together by craft.\r\n\r\nBio \r\nFuture Retrieval\r\n\r\nGuy Michael Davis was born in 1978 and raised in Bartlesville, OK. Katie Parker was born in 1980 in Jonesboro Arkansas, and grew up in Plano, Texas. They both attended the Kansas City Art Institute from 1999-2003 and received BFA degrees in ceramics.\r\nKatie went straight to graduate school at The Ohio State University from 2003-2005, Guy followed suit three years later from 2006-2008. Both Katie and Guy received MFA degrees in ceramics. \r\nCurrently, Katie is an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati, running the ceramics department. Guy works for multiple designers across the country, and is an adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati. For several years, they have also been collaborating together, making objects that combine new technology, porcelain, and good craft. The objects merge the strengths of their individual studio practice \u2013 a dark vein backed by a historical current. They have exhibited both nationally and internationally, with recent shows in New York City, Jingdezhen China, Cardiff Wales, Philadelphia, Kansas City, and Tempe Arizona. How do we make the cognitive connection between a two-dimensional shadow and the three-dimensional object that casts it? Ruth Benedict\u2019s, The Chrysanthemum and the Sword (1946) is widely known as an anthropological study of Japan that resulted from wartime research. I will describe the roots of Japanese Studies in the US, as well as US development of the subject area from the wartime to post wartime.\r\n\r\nThe Office of Strategic Services (OSS) and the Office of War Information (OWI) were two organizations through which many anthropologists were recruited into the field. Specifically, I will focus on the background of Japanese studies at the University of Michigan from the historical anthropological research.\r\n\r\nKatsumi Nakao is the 2014-15 Toyota Visiting Professor at the Center for Japanese Studies at the University of Michigan, and Professor of Liberal Arts (history and anthropology) at J.F. Oberlin University in Tokyo. His professional career began with a Bachelor of Law degree from Chuo University. Later, he received a Master of Law degree from Meiji University and a Doctor of Human and Environmental Studies degree from Kyoto University. Along with his professorial appointments, he has also acted as a special assistant at the Consulate General of Japan in Hong Kong (1987-1989) and a researcher of Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science (1989-1990). Gruber, associate professor of Islamic art, U-M\r\n\r\nIn early June 2013, Gezi Park became the staging ground for the most serious challenge to Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan\u2019s decade-long rule in Turkey. When police brutally cleared the Istanbul park of peaceful environmentalists, a massive popular uprising was spawned, lasting to the present day. Quickly five young men became the official \u201cmartyrs\u201d (\u015fehitler) of the Gezi movement. As violence claimed the lives of these young men, an important question thus arises: what are the symbolic framings and functions of martyrs in a pluralistic consortium, whose contours are largely shaped by a desire to preserve a secular, representative democracy in the face of increasing authoritarianism displayed by the ruling Islamist AK Party?\r\n\r\nIn order to answer such questions, this talk explores the rhetorical strategies and visual output that the Gezi Movement produced in Istanbul during 2013-14. In slogans, chants, graffiti, digital art, Twitter posts, posters, banners, stickers, processions, sit-ins, and performances, the five martyrs are described as \u201cimmortal,\u201d whose deaths must be accounted for by the \u201ckiller government.\u201d Emphasizing the notions of innocence, immortality, and omnipresence, Gezi rhetoric about death engages with older Islamic religious beliefs and martyrial traditions while also constructing a new mythic reality within a largely secular register.\r\n\r\nIn addition, these martyrs became the embodiments of the Gezi Resistance and its major aims. They symbolized the need to reclaim justice, insisting that the government be held accountable in its social contract with all of its citizens. NPR Music named him one of 10 artists music fans \u201cshould\u2019ve known in 2012,\u201d describing him as \u201castonishing\u2026unclassifiably original. And frighteningly good.\u201d Paste included him in a \u201cBest of What\u2019s Next\u201d feature, praising his \u201cgnarly composite of blues and folk,\u201d while The New York Times observed that Shakey Graves \u201cmakes the one-man band approach look effortless.\u201d\r\n\r\nBut while this distinctive arrangement continued to earn him an ever-expanding fan base on the road, Rose-Garcia knew that he wanted the follow-up to achieve something different. \u201cWith the first album, I didn\u2019t have any expectations except my own,\u201d he says. \u201cThis time, I was making something people were going to listen to out of the gate. I tried to maintain everything I enjoy about recording, the weird homemade aspect, but I was seeking a new, shining sound quality. The concepts for the songs are a little bigger. This is not the \u2018Mr, Folk, Hobo Mountain\u2019 album\u2014it\u2019s more of the Cyborg Shakey Graves. It\u2019s definitely the next step in the staircase.\u201d\r\n\r\nAn experienced actor who had a recurring role on Friday Night Lights and appeared in several of Robert Rodriguez films, Rose-Garcia started making music as part of New York City\u2019s \u201canti-folk\u201d scene. While knocking around the underground music community in Los Angeles, he saw a performance by one-man band Bob Log III that pointed his work in a new direction. Since returning to Austin, Rose-Garcia has become so closely associated with his hometown that for the last three years, Austin has celebrated \u201cShakey Graves Day\u201d by mayoral proclamation.\r\n\r\nTo record And the War Came, co-producer\/collaborator Chris Boosahda brought all of his gear to Rose-Garcia\u2019s house and converted the space into a big, open studio. Though the signature Shakey Graves set-up remained the starting point, other instrumentalists came in and multiple, wildly different arrangements of the songs were attempted for what was initially planned as a double album.\r\n\r\nMost notably, Rose-Garcia wrote and sings three of the album\u2019s songs with Esme Patterson, a solo artist and member of the Denver-based band Paper Bird. \u201cWe started out just having fun and writing, and then that turned into some of my favorite songs on the album,\u201d he says. \u201cWe actually wrote \u2018Dearly Departed\u2019 on Halloween as a tongue-in-cheek, haunted house sex joke, and then we played it that night and people went bonkers. Esme and I write so similarly it kinda freaked us out, and I really learned the power of writing music with someone you get along with.\u201d\r\n\r\nSoon enough, Rose-Garcia found that the experience of making the record was being mirrored in the songs themselves. \u201cI was letting go of that one-man everything,\u201d he says. \u201cI did need people\u2019s help, and my control freak nature had to subside a bit. It meant learning collaboration, but also knowing when to stick to my guns\u2014all of that was the experience of this year, and the songs were some of the more genuine experiences; some of them even became sort of prophetic.\u201d\r\n\r\n\u201cOnly Son,\u201d a meditation on solitude (\u201cI used to be an only son\/My heart was like a stranger\u201d), became the opening track and \u201cthesis statement\u201d for And the War Came. \u201cHard Wired\u201d is not, as it may first appear, about a relationship falling apart, but \u201cabout having friends with problems\u2014watching a friend struggling and not doing anything about it.\u201d\r\n\r\nThe themes of these ten songs, explains Rose-Garcia, return over and over to the idea of the \u201cother.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s not about any single person, it\u2019s about being that second, other person. Even the title\u2014I never thought about whether I was able to handle that aspect of things, of having these relationships. And the War Came is a little bit of, be careful what you wish for.\u201d\r\n\r\nSongs like \u201cThe Perfect Parts\u201d and \u201cFamily and Genus,\u201d meanwhile, represent a very different sound for Shakey Graves. \u201cThose have a lot more aggression, they\u2019re heavy and big,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m a little worried because it is a new step out, and people have gotten really precious about the stuff I\u2019ve done\u2014which is a huge compliment, and a dream come true\u2014but I\u2019m interested in what a Shakey Graves song is to people.\u201d\r\n\r\nAnother crucial influence on the direction of And the War Came has been Rose-Garcia\u2019s lengthy and far-flung touring schedule (which has recently included stops at the Winnipeg and Newport Folk Festivals, prior to a headlining run this fall). \u201cI\u2019m constantly flying places and moving at a fast rate,\u201d he says. \u201cImagining what it was like a year ago is almost incomprehensible to me now. I feel like I\u2019ve almost seen too much this year\u2014bands, music, places. And if that doesn\u2019t affect you in certain ways, then you\u2019re doing it wrong.\u201d\r\n\r\nWhile his remarkable success story continues to unfold, Alejandro Rose-Garcia sees And the War Came as a pivotal step in the evolution of Shakey Graves. \u201cThis is a doorframe album, as we\u2019re going into a new building,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s taste of everything\u2014what might come in future, which might include just guitar or the one-man band thing, but not pigeonholed to any one sound.
