It was in the context of continued conflict that University of Michigan Professor of Archaeology Francis Willey Kelsey (1858-1927) traveled to the Near East. Accompanied by his wife Isabelle (Mary) Badger Kelsey (1867-1944), his fifteen-year old son Easton Trowbridge Kelsey (b. 1904) and University of Michigan staff photographer George Robert Swain (1866-1947), Kelsey visited a region of the world that not only had experienced four-years of destructive war and devastating famine, but also was the site of genocide.\r\n\r\nThe initial mission was to collect ancient manuscripts that were destined to disappear in the post war chaos. To initiate the mission, Prof. Kelsey wrote an urgent letter to Miss Belle da Costa Greene of the Pierpont Library on October 3, 1918. He solicited her support for an immediate expedition into the aftermath of war for \u201cunless peace comes soon enough to save the remnants\u201d of Greek and Armenian society, who have \u201cbeen practically exterminated in certain large regions of Asia Minor\u201d no record of these Christian communities would remain. It was \u201cnow or never\u201d he writes that ancient and medieval manuscripts may be purchased from \u201cunappreciative hands\u201d for a token price. It was now or never that Greek, Syriac, Persian and Armenian manuscripts could be easily picked up and the \u201cpossession of these, and their proper preservation, will be a gain to science of inestimable value.\u201d Little did Kelsey know that his travels to the Near East would also become a moment of witnessing. Each object contains a history, reaching back and highlighting ideals of time and labor.\r\nThree-dimensional scans and photographs have been rapid prototyped, processed in the studio, and molded into porcelain mimicking the world of European decorative arts. Inspired also by German animal sculptures and cut silhouettes, we are using digital translation to both highlight and transform these details that fascinate us. The interest in new technologies and industrial methods is that each piece is handmade, but maintains the record of a computer driven interpretation. Our intention is to make art objects that reference design and are held together by craft.\r\n\r\nBio \r\nFuture Retrieval\r\n\r\nGuy Michael Davis was born in 1978 and raised in Bartlesville, OK. Katie Parker was born in 1980 in Jonesboro Arkansas, and grew up in Plano, Texas. They both attended the Kansas City Art Institute from 1999-2003 and received BFA degrees in ceramics.\r\nKatie went straight to graduate school at The Ohio State University from 2003-2005, Guy followed suit three years later from 2006-2008. Both Katie and Guy received MFA degrees in ceramics. \r\nCurrently, Katie is an Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati, running the ceramics department. Guy works for multiple designers across the country, and is an adjunct Assistant Professor at the University of Cincinnati. For several years, they have also been collaborating together, making objects that combine new technology, porcelain, and good craft. The objects merge the strengths of their individual studio practice \u2013 a dark vein backed by a historical current. They have exhibited both nationally and internationally, with recent shows in New York City, Jingdezhen China, Cardiff Wales, Philadelphia, Kansas City, and Tempe Arizona. Prior to her current role, Tina advanced the College\u2019s alumni engagement efforts by serving as a College Connections Coordinator, meeting over 1,000 LSA alumni nationally and internationally for face-to-face interviews. Tina has also worked for the US Embassy in Kiev, Ukraine, the United States Mission to the United Nations in Geneva, Switzerland, the Club de Madrid in Madrid, Spain and for the State Department in Washington, D.C. It consists of Cambrian-Ordovician mafic to felsic metavolcanic and interlayered metasedimentary rocks, intruded by a series of Silurian to earliest Carboniferous dioritic to granitic plutons. Trace element geochemistry and Sm\/Nd results of the oldest volcanic rocks indicate an early Paleozoic arc\/back-arc origin of the terrane. The mafic volcanic rocks had a primitive source. The oldest intermediate and felsic rocks incorporated older, isotopically evolved crustal material, indicative of a Ganderian basement below the terrane. Based on negative \u03b5Nd values, model ages and detrital zircon ages, metasedimentary rocks were derived from mixed, generally evolved, sources with Archean though Ordovician input, indicating a Ganderian source.\r\nThe Nashoba terrane is interpreted as a Ganderian arc-backarc complex similar to the Penobscot and\/or Popelogan-Victoria arc systems and the Tetagouche-Exploits backarc basin on the leading (NW) margin of Ganderia in the northern Appalachians. The Nashoba terrane, however, is now located on the trailing (SE) margin of Ganderia and must have been there since ~430 Ma, when subduction-related plutons intruded the terrane and deposition of the ~430-407 Ma Merrimack terrane sediments to the NW took place\r\n\r\nMajor and trace element geochemical and Sm\/Nd data of ~430-350 Ma dioritic and granitic plutons in the Nashoba terrane indicate subduction-related convergence. Significantly younger model ages in the youngest granitic rocks may reflect Avalonian input after 350 Ma. Acadian and Neo- or post-Acadian metamorphism occurred between ~425 Ma and ~360 Ma, related to convergence between the Nashoba, Merrimack and Avalon terranes and possibly subsequent exhumation of the Nashoba terrane.\r\nThe Norumbega fault system in New England is a Paleozoic northeast-trending orogen-parallel, subvertical, predominantly dextral transpressive fault system. It was active at least as early as in the Middle Devonian, during the Acadian orogeny. It consists of one major shear zone and numerous associated localized mylonite zones. It extends from southwestern New Brunswick to southern Maine and New Hampshire, but no obvious equivalent fault zone has been found in eastern Massachusetts. Northeastern Massachusetts thus represents a Middle to Late Devonian transition zone between transcurrent movement, similar to the San Andreas Fault, to the northeast, and a northwesterly directed subduction zone, similar to the Cascadia subduction zone, resulting in the accretion of Avalon, to the south. If the analogue is correct, northeastern Massachusetts may represent a mid-crustal exposure of a Late Devonian triple junction, and the Norumbega fault zone may have formed as result of subduction of a mid ocean ridge, similar to the San Andreas Fault.\r\n\r\nIn our model, Late Devonian southeastern New England is an equivalent to the San Andreas Fault-Cascades system at mid-crustal levels, but rotated by ~180 degrees, and ~360 My earlier. The Laurentian\/Ganderian, Rheic and \u2018Avalonian\u2019 plates are equivalents of the North American, Pacific and San Juan plates. In eastern Massachusetts, part of Avalon remained behind on a microplate attached to the spreading Rheic ocean, while to the north the spreading ridge was subducted and the Norumbega transform fault created. The Norumbega fault zone may have been largely deflected into the ocean in or north of northeastern Massachusetts, similar to the deflection of the San Andreas Fault towards the north into the Mendocino fracture zone in the ocean.
