It was in the context of continued conflict that University of Michigan Professor of Archaeology Francis Willey Kelsey (1858-1927) traveled to the Near East. Accompanied by his wife Isabelle (Mary) Badger Kelsey (1867-1944), his fifteen-year old son Easton Trowbridge Kelsey (b. 1904) and University of Michigan staff photographer George Robert Swain (1866-1947), Kelsey visited a region of the world that not only had experienced four-years of destructive war and devastating famine, but also was the site of genocide.\r\n\r\nThe initial mission was to collect ancient manuscripts that were destined to disappear in the post war chaos. To initiate the mission, Prof. Kelsey wrote an urgent letter to Miss Belle da Costa Greene of the Pierpont Library on October 3, 1918. He solicited her support for an immediate expedition into the aftermath of war for \u201cunless peace comes soon enough to save the remnants\u201d of Greek and Armenian society, who have \u201cbeen practically exterminated in certain large regions of Asia Minor\u201d no record of these Christian communities would remain. It was \u201cnow or never\u201d he writes that ancient and medieval manuscripts may be purchased from \u201cunappreciative hands\u201d for a token price. It was now or never that Greek, Syriac, Persian and Armenian manuscripts could be easily picked up and the \u201cpossession of these, and their proper preservation, will be a gain to science of inestimable value.\u201d Little did Kelsey know that his travels to the Near East would also become a moment of witnessing. Professor Wooten conducts research in four primary areas: (1) positive organizing routines; (2) diversity management; (3) crisis leadership through resilience and organizational learning; and (4) educational and leadership development of undergraduate students. Her research appears in academic journals, monographs, and popular press outlets.\r\n\r\nErika Hayes James was appointed Dean of Emory University\u2019s Goizueta Business School on May 19, 2014. Prior to this prestigious appointment, James served as Senior Associate Dean for Executive Education at the Darden Graduate School of Business (Virginia). James is a published researcher, award-winning educator, admired administrator, regarded speaker and proven consultant. Her expertise in workplace diversity and crisis leadership has led to recognition in scholarly journals and mainstream media. From designing shelters for immigrant day laborers in the U.S. to leading a design workshop at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting, Ogbu has a long history of engagement in the design for social impact movement.\r\nHer clients include the Nike Foundation and PG&E. And her network of collaborators have been equally dynamic including the likes of HealthxDesign, envelope a+d, FOURM design+build, and Rebar. Ogbu has been actively involved in shaping two of the world\u2019s leading public interest design nonprofits. In 2011, she was part of the inaugural class of Innovators-in-Residence at IDEO.org, IDEO\u2019s sister nonprofit dedicated to fostering global poverty reduction through design and innovation. Prior to that, she was Design Director at Public Architecture, a national nonprofit mobilizing designers to create social change. Whether interviewing day laborers in Los Angeles, analyzing health clinics in Bolivia, or developing a water and health social enterprise in Kenya, she has worked to advance the cause of innovative design and strategic thinking as a tool to address the needs and desires of underserved communities.\r\nIn addition to her practice work, Liz has had a long commitment to bringing social impact work into the classroom where her courses and research explore opportunities at intersection of design, innovation, and community engagement. She has taught at the California College of the Arts for several years, most recently holding an appointment as the inaugural Scholar in Residence at the school\u2019s Center for Art and Public Life. She is also on faculty at UC Berkeley and Stanford\u2019s d.school.\r\nOgbu\u2019s work has also been widely exhibited, including at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, Rotterdam Biennale and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in architecture from Wellesley College and Master of Architecture from the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University.
