There was nothing better than having a mining job. Festivals were created to celebrate miner\u2019s service to the industry and to thank their families for helping along the way. Although, coal jobs have declined in towns of West Virginia where I grew up, there is still an allegiance to an industry that helped families live larger and better; a reminiscence of the good ole\u2019 days. This series helps explore the complex, conflicted experience of coal miners, their families, interest in the tradition of vernacular objects, and to pay homage to the personal family history of coal mining and the work ethic included within it. \u2013Julie Rae Powers\r\n\r\nJulie Rae Powers is a photographic artist, born in West Virginia, and grew up in the south. Her practice centers on identity experiences, personal history, and gender\/sexuality politics. Her work has recently been added to the permanent collection of the Institute for Research on Women and Gender at the University of Michigan and published in Rich Community: An Anthology of Appalachian Photographers by Sapling Grove Press. They painted abandoned houses on the street with bright housepaints and attached objects to the exteriors, turning them into gigantic assemblage sculptures.\r\n\r\nMost of the houses have a defined theme. The Baby Doll House (now destroyed) was covered from roof to foundation with discarded toy dolls in various states of repair. Similarly, the Clock House has painted renditions of clocks covering its exterior. The project\u2019s lively and unexpected juxtapositions of objects, words, colors, and symbols create a strange and wonderful immersive world.\r\n\r\nThe 30-year anniversary of the Heidelberg Project is a moment for Guyton, and his audience, to reflect on what his work has meant to the cultural life of Detroit and beyond. Guyton has created two new works specifically for this exhibition, one in the studio and one in the project. How Much for the City, a mixed-media sculpture, makes reference to his long-standing struggles with city government. On Heidelberg Street, he is building a full-scale house; it will rise on the foundation of a house destroyed by arson. The process of its construction can be viewed on the Heidelberg Television monitor in the gallery. It is thus crucial to understand how people report their private information in order to predict outcomes and to improve institutions ranging from tax systems to labour contracts. In this paper, the researchers document the stylized facts of this burgeoning literature, formalize the suggested reasons for the observed behaviour and conduct new experiments to disentangle between these reasons. \r\n\r\nThey start by collating the data from about 50 studies covering decisions of more than 16000 subjects. They find that patterns of reporting behaviour are very stable. There is surprisingly little lying \u2013 subjects realize on average only about a third of the earnings they could obtain by lying maximally. Increasing stakes does not change this. In most studies, some non-maximal numbers are reported more often than their truthful probability, suggesting that there are subjects who lie but do not lie maximally.\r\n\r\nThe researchers then analyse the suggested reasons why subjects do not lie.Departing from the vast majority of previous studies, they study asymmetric true distributions, e.g., a lottery with 40% chance to win a small prize and a 60% chance to win a large prize. Almost all previous experiments used symmetric distributions (most often uniform). With the new experiments, the researchers can reject all models currently suggested in the literature. In particular, none of the models which depart only in one way from a standard neo-classical utility function can explain the data. This includes all versions of social preferences (e.g., Fehr & Schmidt QJE 1999), convex lying costs (e.g. Kartik et al. JET 2007), fixed lying costs (Ellingsen EJ 2004), and most versions of a desire to appear honest, a desire to appear non-greedy or a desire to conform to the endogenous social norm.
