An environmental portrait of Nova Scotia, it takes its departure point from a live performance with multiple projections where Cohen collaborated with an ensemble of musicians to make what has been described as a cinematic love letter to Nova Scotia's Cape Breton. Footage of the island, gathered over 10 years, is interspersed with texts ranging from poems to local folklore, buoyed by both environmental sounds and an original score written and performed by members from a diverse group of bands, including Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Dirty Three, Fugazi, White Magic, Silver Mt. Zion, and The Quavers.\r\n\t\r\nIn the Photography Gallery, more than 25 still photographs, again gathered over a long period in a disappearing analog format (in this case, Polaroid film), are subtly married to digital technology. The images, some urban and some domestic, are from a variety of locations ranging from New York to Tangier. In this talk Dr. Mullainathan will (1) try to delineate the difference between problems that require causation and problems that require prediction; (2) describe results from solving one such prediction problem in detail; (3) highlight the set of new statistical issues these problems raise; and (4) argue that solving these problems can also generate both policy impact and conceptual insights.\r\n\r\nAbout the speaker:<\/strong>\r\n\r\nSendhil Mullainathan is a Professor of Economics at Harvard University. His real passion is behavioral economics. His work runs a wide gamut: the impact of poverty on mental bandwidth; whether CEO pay is excessive; using fictitious resumes to measure discrimination; showing that higher cigarette taxes makes smokers happier; modeling how competition affects media bias; and a model of coarse thinking. His latest research focuses on using machine learning and data mining techniques to better understand human behavior. \r\n\r\nHe enjoys writing, having recently co-authored Scarcity: Why Having too Little Means so Much and writes regularly for the New York Times.\r\n\r\nHe helped co-found a non-profit to apply behavioral science (ideas42), co-founded a center to promote the use of randomized control trials in development (the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab), serves on the board of the MacArthur Foundation, and has worked in government in various roles, including most recently as Assistant Director of Research at the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.\r\n\r\nHe is a recipient of the MacArthur \u201cgenius\u201d Award, has been designated a \u201cYoung Global Leader\u201d by the World Economic Forum, labeled a \u201cTop 100 Thinker\u201d by Foreign Policy Magazine, and named to the \u201cSmart List: 50 people who will change the world\u201d by Wired Magazine (UK). Occupying more than two blocks along Heidelberg Street on Detroit\u2019s East Side, the project has transformed its neighborhood, covering abandoned houses, the street, and the surrounding area with collections of found objects and vividly rendered paintings.\r\n\r\nCelebrating its 30th anniversary in 2016, the Heidelberg Project has been the life\u2019s work of artist Tyree Guyton. Guyton grew up on Heidelberg Street, and was encouraged by his housepainter grandfather to choose art as an alternative to drugs and guns. Guyton began the project with his family, and with the help of neighborhood children, they gathered discarded objects, from toys and clothes to televisions and furniture. They painted abandoned houses on the street with bright housepaints and attached objects to the exteriors, turning them into gigantic assemblage sculptures.\r\n\r\nMost of the houses have a defined theme. The Baby Doll House (now destroyed) was covered from roof to foundation with discarded toy dolls in various states of repair. Similarly, the Clock House has painted renditions of clocks covering its exterior. The project\u2019s lively and unexpected juxtapositions of objects, words, colors, and symbols create a strange and wonderful immersive world.\r\n\r\nThe 30-year anniversary of the Heidelberg Project is a moment for Guyton, and his audience, to reflect on what his work has meant to the cultural life of Detroit and beyond. Guyton has created two new works specifically for this exhibition, one in the studio and one in the project. How Much for the City, a mixed-media sculpture, makes reference to his long-standing struggles with city government. On Heidelberg Street, he is building a full-scale house; it will rise on the foundation of a house destroyed by arson. The process of its construction can be viewed on the Heidelberg Television monitor in the gallery. Dominant historical accounts focus on Muslims, while discussions about Christians and Jews are generally confined to an analysis of a single community. Such an approach has obscured historical linkages and the similar ways in which people from different communities in multiethnic and multiconfessional urban centers of the Middle East experienced and played an active role in shaping the contours of modernity in the region. This presentation seeks to contribute to a \u201cnew school\u201d of scholarship that investigates transformations in the late Ottoman Empire across sectarian divisions. Specifically, it focuses on the emergence of a shared sports culture amongst Ottoman Turks and Armenians in early-twentieth-century Istanbul. This culture centered around the belief that the regular performance of physical exercise, gymnastics, and \u201cwestern\u201d team sports was the most effective means to form robust young men, modern communities, and a civilized empire. She currently works for the US Department of State, where she is a staff assistant in the Department of State\u2019s Executive Office of Secretary, managing travel logistics for the Secretary of State.\r\n\r\nMichael MacQueen: Senior Historian in the Balkans Team at US Immigration & Customs Enforcement, MacQueen investigates war crimes and crimes against humanity committed during the 1991\u20101999 wars in the former Yugoslavia by persons who subsequently entered the United States. MacQueen credits his Michigan training in history, specifically work on East European nationalism under former U-M Professor Roman Szporluk, for providing him with the analytic tools he uses in his law enforcement assignments.\r\n\r\nHeather Radke: An audio producer, curator, and writer, Radke spent four years making exhibits, audio pieces, and public programs for the Jane Addams Hull House Museum, where she connected the history of Hull House to contemporary social issues. Before coming to museum work, Heather trained as an audio producer at the Salt Institute for Documentary Studies in Portland, Maine and produced multimedia for public radio and cultural institutions across the country.
