Her charge was to photograph sites, monuments, and artworks as well as urban and rural scenes, landscapes, people, and life textures that can be used for research and teaching amongst numerous disciplines. The result is some 8,000 images that celebrate life, vibrancy, and color, as well as Iranian traditions of art and design stretching back through the centuries. The collection will ultimately be available to the University and beyond via the U-M Digital Library. \r\n\r\nBjork has selected various images from this extensive collection to create an exhibit that offers a broadened perspective on Iran for an American audience. These photographs speak not of governments, but of the culture, heritage, and humanity of a country and its diverse peoples. \r\n\r\nOrganized by the Center for Middle Eastern and North African Studies, this exhibition is made possible by the Department of Anthropology, the Department of Comparative Literature, the Department of the History of Art (Freer Fund), the Department of Near Eastern Studies, and the University of Michigan Detroit Center. Stories of Mothers Lost - a collection of internationally sourced, hand crafted panels commemorating mothers lost \u2013 allows families to express grief and also plays a powerful role as a mechanism for advocacy and communication on an issue that transcends country borders and impacts us all. \r\n\r\nStories of Mothers Lost is supplied by the UM Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and its Program in Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice. Kelsey; and A. M. Todd of Kalamazoo, a chemist, global entrepreneur, and utopian thinker who marketed his distilled mint products across the world at the turn of the last century. One famous dealer these figures worked with was the Lion of Cairo, Maurice Nahman.\r\n\r\nOn view will be some rarely displayed artifacts acquired through the efforts of these collectors, including large decorated Coptic tunics from Egypt and a volume from the Kelsey\u2019s rare complete edition of the Napoleonic Description de l'\u00c9gypte. An environmental portrait of Nova Scotia, it takes its departure point from a live performance with multiple projections where Cohen collaborated with an ensemble of musicians to make what has been described as a cinematic love letter to Nova Scotia's Cape Breton. Footage of the island, gathered over 10 years, is interspersed with texts ranging from poems to local folklore, buoyed by both environmental sounds and an original score written and performed by members from a diverse group of bands, including Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Dirty Three, Fugazi, White Magic, Silver Mt. Zion, and The Quavers.\r\n\t\r\nIn the Photography Gallery, more than 25 still photographs, again gathered over a long period in a disappearing analog format (in this case, Polaroid film), are subtly married to digital technology. The images, some urban and some domestic, are from a variety of locations ranging from New York to Tangier. It argues that the increasing right-wing radicalization of Hungarian politics and the growth of \u201cuncivil\u201d publics have been fueled by an expanding industry that effectively commodifies these sentiments. The analysis focuses on four key areas of radical nationalist cultural production: book publishers that specialize in printing and disseminating nationalist literature; heritage tourism to neighboring countries (especially to Transylvania, Romania) that aims to build bridges to diaspora Hungarians and sustain the idea of a Greater (pre-1918) Hungary; national rock bands that have codified a new, economically successful genre of political popular music; and clothing brands that market explicitly nationalist fashion items. By tracing the symbolic economies of new forms of radical nationalism, I highlight an important dimension of everyday nationalism. This analytical lens helps to demonstrate that contemporary right-wing radicalism is not a codified political ideology but a more fluid subculture in which expressive symbols, material objects, rituals, everyday consumption and lifestyle patterns are essential carriers of political convictions and markers of group boundaries. These symbolic economies also contribute to reconfiguring the boundaries between politics and the public sphere allowing radical nationalist discourse to penetrate mainstream political discourse.\r\n\r\nVir\u00e1g Moln\u00e1r received her Ph.D. in sociology from Princeton University and is currently associate professor of sociology at the New School for Social Research. Her research explores the intersections of culture, politics, social change and expert knowledge with special focus on urban and political subcultures and the symbolic politics of the built environment. She has written about the relationship between architecture and state formation in socialist and postsocialist Eastern Europe, the post-1989 reconstruction of Berlin, and the new housing landscape of postsocialist cities. Direct exposure to the evolution of objects remains fundamental to work within the design system, but passing from an empirical to a strategic knowledge of design languages requires a specific understanding of the ways in which the different aesthetics embodied in objects refer to the cultural meanings underlying them. With this in mind, the talk provides a guide to the \u201cgrammar\u201d of design languages, with an emphasis on the contemporary scene, so as to aid design professionals in their passage from being merely familiar with the aesthetics of objects to being able to understand and use such aesthetics strategically.\n\nAbout Stefano Caggiano\n\nStefano Caggiano is a design critic with an emphasis on design languages. Graduated both in Philosophy and Product Design, he writes on a regular basis for the Italian and international leading design magazine \u201cInterni\u201d and works as a visual culture researcher with the trend consultancy society NextAtlas. He also teaches as a contract professor in several Italian design universities, including NABA in Milan and the Faculty of Design and Art at the Free University in Bozen. Occupying more than two blocks along Heidelberg Street on Detroit\u2019s East Side, the project has transformed its neighborhood, covering abandoned houses, the street, and the surrounding area with collections of found objects and vividly rendered paintings.\r\n\r\nCelebrating its 30th anniversary in 2016, the Heidelberg Project has been the life\u2019s work of artist Tyree Guyton. Guyton grew up on Heidelberg Street, and was encouraged by his housepainter grandfather to choose art as an alternative to drugs and guns. Guyton began the project with his family, and with the help of neighborhood children, they gathered discarded objects, from toys and clothes to televisions and furniture. They painted abandoned houses on the street with bright housepaints and attached objects to the exteriors, turning them into gigantic assemblage sculptures.\r\n\r\nMost of the houses have a defined theme. The Baby Doll House (now destroyed) was covered from roof to foundation with discarded toy dolls in various states of repair. Similarly, the Clock House has painted renditions of clocks covering its exterior. The project\u2019s lively and unexpected juxtapositions of objects, words, colors, and symbols create a strange and wonderful immersive world.\r\n\r\nThe 30-year anniversary of the Heidelberg Project is a moment for Guyton, and his audience, to reflect on what his work has meant to the cultural life of Detroit and beyond. Guyton has created two new works specifically for this exhibition, one in the studio and one in the project. How Much for the City, a mixed-media sculpture, makes reference to his long-standing struggles with city government. On Heidelberg Street, he is building a full-scale house; it will rise on the foundation of a house destroyed by arson. The process of its construction can be viewed on the Heidelberg Television monitor in the gallery. Schlissel, in addition to being President of the University, holds a professorship of microbiology and immunology, and internal medicine within the UM Health System as well as a professorship of molecular, cellular, and developmental biology within the College of Literature, Science, and the Arts. \r\n\r\nSchlissel received his M.D. and Ph.D. from the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1986 through the Medical Scientist Training Program. After completing a residency in Internal Medicine at Johns Hopkins Hospital he continued his postdoctoral research fellowship at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He served as a faculty member at Johns Hopkins from 1991-1999, worked as a Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology at UC Berkeley and then was Dean of Biological Sciences in the College of Letters & Science from 2008-2011. Prior to coming to Ann Arbor, Schlissel served as provost at Brown University from 2011-2014. \r\n\r\nDr. Schlissel\u2019s prior experience and extensive accolades in the field of medicine make him a perfect candidate to speak at the 20th lecture. He will be the third U-M President to give this address. \r\n\r\nIn 1996 the Waggoner lectureship was created in honor of the late Dr. Waggoner, emeritus professor and past chairman of the department of psychiatry, who throughout his career and to all who knew him, exemplified the highest standards of integrity and ethics. Mr. Cohen's research activity has focused mainly on 20th-century architecture and urban planning. In particular, he has studied German and Soviet architectural cultures, colonial situations in North Africa, architecture during World War II, and extensively interpreted Le Corbusier's work and Paris planning history. His recent publications include: The Future of Architecture.
