Stories of Mothers Lost - a collection of internationally sourced, hand crafted panels commemorating mothers lost \u2013 allows families to express grief and also plays a powerful role as a mechanism for advocacy and communication on an issue that transcends country borders and impacts us all. \r\n\r\nStories of Mothers Lost is supplied by the UM Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and its Program in Sexual Rights and Reproductive Justice. But it is also the object\u2019s ability to act as a rhizome, the multiple ways in which it can be discovered or read by a wide audience, that draws me in. To sustain my practice, I milk the object, its potential, its image, and its materiality. I manipulate the object in a formal manner to engage the viewer in conversation about collective meaning. Can systematically folded paper effectively use light and shadow in the same manner as an elaborately dyed cloth? What is the connection between color studies, combs, and tapestries? Can a strand of hair tell a life story? I trust that my stories, your stories, our stories are held in the object. In this way, the everyday \u201cthing\u201d becomes a lens through which we may better see one another. in 1907 until the 1960s approximately 60,000 people were sterilized based on eugenic criteria that sought to regulate the reproduction of the \"unfit\" and mentally deficient. California performed about 20,000, or one-third, of all documented sterilizations nationwide. Few empirical historical analyses of this practice are available. In 2007, while conducting historical research at the Department of Mental Health (now Department of State Hospitals) in Sacramento, Dr. Stern located 19 microfilm reels from this era that contain 15,000 sterilization recommendations along with supplemental letters and forms from nine state hospitals (in total, over 30,000 individual documents). Over the past two years Dr. Stern and her team have created a de-identified HIPAA-compliant data set of these recommendations, which date from 1921 to 1952. We are now beginning to realize quantitative analyses with the eugenic sterilization dataset, which contains 212 coded variables, to describe trends in sterilization over time and to describe patterns of sterilization according to gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, diagnosis, institutional home, and many other variables. We also are linking the eugenic sterilization dataset to individual-level census microdata and tract-level census reports, which will allow us to calculate population-based estimates of sterilization rates and test hypotheses about the associations of gender, age, ethnicity, nationality, and diagnosis with the risk of sterilization. For example, we hypothesize that teenagers and Spanish-surnamed patients were disproportionately sterilized in California institutions. In addition, we will analyze qualitative patterns in the data with respect to familial resistance to sterilization, patient refusal, and experiences of institutionalization and sterilization. This project combines quantitative and qualitative methods, and is exploring new avenues for presenting big data through data visualization on an online archive under development.\r\n\r\n\r\nAlexandra Minna Stern, Ph.D. is Professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Culture, History, and Women's Studies at the University of Michigan. There she is a core faculty member in the Latina\/o Studies Program; the Science, Technology, and Society Program; directs the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies\/Brazil Initiative and co-directs the Reproductive Justice Faculty Program at the Institute for Research on Women and Gender. Her research has focused on the uses and misuses of genetics in the United States and Latin America. She is the author of Eugenic Nation: Faults and Frontiers of Better Breeding in Modern America (University of California Press, 2005), which won the American Public Health Association's Arthur Viseltear Award for outstanding contribution to the history of public health. Her latest book, Telling Genes: The Story of Genetic Counseling in America (Johns Hopkins University Press, 2012) is a Choice 2013 Outstanding Academic Title in Health Sciences. Guyton began the project with his family, and with the help of neighborhood children, they gathered discarded objects, from toys and clothes to televisions and furniture. They painted abandoned houses on the street with bright housepaints and attached objects to the exteriors, turning them into gigantic assemblage sculptures.\r\n\r\nMost of the houses have a defined theme. The Baby Doll House (now destroyed) was covered from roof to foundation with discarded toy dolls in various states of repair. Similarly, the Clock House has painted renditions of clocks covering its exterior. The project\u2019s lively and unexpected juxtapositions of objects, words, colors, and symbols create a strange and wonderful immersive world.\r\n\r\nThe 30-year anniversary of the Heidelberg Project is a moment for Guyton, and his audience, to reflect on what his work has meant to the cultural life of Detroit and beyond. Guyton has created two new works specifically for this exhibition, one in the studio and one in the project. How Much for the City, a mixed-media sculpture, makes reference to his long-standing struggles with city government. On Heidelberg Street, he is building a full-scale house; it will rise on the foundation of a house destroyed by arson. The process of its construction can be viewed on the Heidelberg Television monitor in the gallery. This talk provides a meta-analysis of prior experimental research and reports the results of a new experiment to elucidate how cooperation varies with the environment in this canonical game. Professor Frechette will describe forces that affect initial play (formation of cooperation) and unraveling (breakdown of cooperation). First, contrary to the backward induction prediction, the parameters of the repeated game have a significant effect on initial cooperation. Professor Frechette will identify how these parameters impact the value of cooperation as captured by the size of the basin of attraction of Always Defect to account for an important part of this effect. Second, despite differences in round one behavior, for all parameter combinations, evolution of behavior is consistent with the unraveling logic of backward induction. Importantly, despite the seemingly contradictory results across studies, Professor Frechette will reveal a systematic pattern of behavior: Subjects converge to using threshold strategies which conditionally cooperate until a threshold round; and conditional on using cooperative threshold strategies, the first defection round moves earlier with experience. This finding, combined with the impact of the value of cooperation on initial cooperation explain how results can vary across studies. It's no wonder they are hard to change. In this presentation, Brandeis University Professor Jody Hoffer Gittell will introduce relational coordination as a tool for both research and practice. She will share live case studies illustrating how organizations use relational coordination principles and measures as tools for change, and then conclude with a Relational Model for Organizational Change.\r\n\r\nJODY HOFFER GITTELL, PhD, is a professor at Brandeis University's Heller School for Social Policy and Management, and a leading expert on relational coordination and organizational performance. She founded the Relational Coordination Research Collaborative, bringing scholars and practitioners together to help organizations build relational coordination for high performance. She co-founded a university spinoff called Relational Coordination Analytics Inc., offering measurement and intervention support to organizations seeking to improve their performance, and serves as its Chief Scientific Officer.\r\n\r\nGittell's research explores how workers, leaders, and customers contribute to quality and efficiency outcomes through their coordination with each other. She has developed a theory of relational coordination, proposing that highly interdependent work is most effectively coordinated through relationships of shared goals, shared knowledge, and mutual respect supported by frequent, timely, accurate, and problem-solving rather than blaming communication. Research demonstrates that relational coordination is associated with a wide range of performance outcomes, and that organizations can support it through the design of their work systems. The RC survey, a validated instrument that is widely used for research as well as practice, assesses dynamics among participants and opens up dialogues to foster fundamental organizational change.\r\n\r\nIn The Southwest Airlines Way: Using the Power of Relationships to Achieve High Performance(McGraw-Hill), and in High Performance Healthcare: Using the Power of Relationships to Achieve Quality, Efficiency and Resilience (McGraw-Hill), Gittell describes how relational coordination drives performance in airlines and in healthcare, and how organizations support - or undermine - its development. In Up In the Air: How the Airlines Can Improve Performance by Engaging Their Employees (Cornell University Press), co-authored with Bamber, Kochan and von Nordenflycht, she analyzes the transformation of the global airline industry in response to low cost competition. Sociology of Organizations: Structures and Relationships (Sage Publications) brings together classic and new authors to show how structures and relationships enable organizations to address their most basic challenges. Her newest book, Relational Coordination: Transforming Relationships for High Performance (Stanford University Press) demonstrates how relational, work process, and structural interventions work together synergistically to enable organizations to achieve sustainable systemic change.\r\n\r\nGittell has published her research in scientific journals such as Academy of Management Review, Organization Science, Management Science, Journal of Applied Behavioral Science, Journal of Organizational Behavior, Journal of Service Research, Journal of Management Studies, Human Resource Management, Human Resource Management Journal, International Journal of Human Resource Management, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Harvard Business Review, California Management Review, Medical Care, Health Services Research, Health Care Management Review, Journal of Nursing Management, and Journal of Early Childhood Research.\r\n\r\nGittell has won a Best Book Award from the Alfred P. While at one level this signifies an attempt to take seriously forms of intellection by indigenous intellectuals, in its form and method it may signify a return to an elite history that privileges elite thought, national identity, and a hermetic understanding of writing and texts over the contextual and miscegenated spaces of historical imagination. Moreover, it continues with the dichotomy instituted by subaltern history of doing elite thought and subaltern action. Menon suggests we need to look at the idea of itinerant thought, of the circular relation between text and contexts and the necessarily transnational space of intellection.\r\n\r\nThe space within which power is conceptualized is multiple, contingent and miscegenated. While researching anti-Christian missionary polemic in late 19th century in Kerala through the writings of a religious figure Chattampi Svamikal, it became clear to Menon that not only were several conceptions of power involved here but also differing conceptions of territory. The enterprise of colonial history writing had created a unilinear narrative of native political and social decline within a territory produced and defined by conquest. Chattampi Swamikal attempted to recover religious traditions not only from a larger Dravidian space to counter this delimiting of territory; he also drew upon the circulation of polemic generated by centuries of Protestant-Catholic conflict in Europe as much as rationalist critiques of the very idea of Christianity itself proceeding from the Enlightenment. Added to this mix were the Hindu apologetics generated by Brahmin intellectuals in Jaffna, Bengal, and Maharashtra which drew upon indigenous philosophical traditions as much as the detritus of intra-Christian debate. Pilgrimages, itinerant preaching, pamphleteering and the movements of labour from SE Asia and Ceylon carried these debates across political, religious and linguistic boundaries.\r\n\r\nDilip Menon studied in Delhi, Oxford (Balliol) and Cambridge (Trinity) and was a Fellow of Magdalene College Cambridge before returning to India to take up teaching posts and fellowships in Trivandrum, Hyderabad and Delhi. He has held postdoctoral and teaching positions at Cambridge, Yale, Zentrum fur Moderner Orient (Berlin)and Maison des Science de les Hommes (Paris) and has published three books and several articles on caste, socialism and modernity in India.
