The first decade was full of hope for a new social order that would reject the values and traditions of Tsarist rule. Centered in Moscow, a group of young artists, spearheaded in part by Vladimir (1899-1982) and Georgy Stenberg (1900-1933), championed an art that promoted the egalitarian ideals of the New Order and contributed to the growth of the Soviet Union. Known as the Constructivists, they advocated for utilitarian art that was easily accessible and spoke to the masses. Among their most provocative and visionary works were posters advertising Soviet films.\r\n\r\n\tUMMA\u2019s exhibition, Soviet Constructivist Posters: Branding the New Order features a selection of posters by the Stenbergs and other Constructivists for some of early cinema\u2019s most inventive films including, Sergei Eisenstein\u2019sOctober and Dziga Vertov\u2019s Man with a Movie Camera.\r\n\r\n\tUsing dynamic compositions, bold colors, and emblematic images, these posters announced that the Soviet Union was a progressive nation that could propel society into a utopian future. Their revolutionary aesthetic became associated with the workers\u2019 movement and helped to shape how it was understood both at home and abroad. Though Constructivism went out of favor in the 1930s with the rise of Joseph Stalin (1878\u20131953), Constructivist designs continued to have an influence abroad. Fearing that drug ethnographies enabled the \u2018ethnographic state\u2019 to reach further into drug-using women\u2019s lives and exacerbate their vulnerability to the state, I was haunted by the unbearable weight of the historical repertoire of representations. At best, feminist ethnographers produce realist accounts that can engender the effects of empathy, authenticity, reduced social distance, and, at best, contribute to the de-stigmatization of illicit drug use. Yet the War on Drugs has intensified its effects on women, differentially and at times spectacularly targeting pregnant and parenting women. How are we to make sense of gender and the War on Drugs? Recent feminist ethnographies of the gendered effects of the War on Drugs tell another story, pointing both to the obduracy of the repository of cultural tropes to which I pointed in Using Women, and the diversification of them through newly emergent modes of life and representation.\r\n\r\nNancy D. This lecture explores the creation of POLIN Museum and its multimedia narrative exhibition, a journey of a thousand years, and its potential to be an agent of transformation that can move an entire society forward.\r\n\r\nBarbara Kirshenblatt-Gimblett is Chief Curator of the Core Exhibition at POLIN Museum of the History of Polish Jews in Warsaw. She is distinguished University Professor Emerita and Professor Emerita of Performance Studies at New York University. Her books include Destination Culture: Tourism, Museums, and Heritage; Image before My Eyes: A Photographic History of Jewish Life in Poland, 1864\u20131939 (with Lucjan Dobroszycki); and The Art of Being Jewish in Modern Times (edited with Jonathan Karp). Her edited volume Writing a Modern Jewish History: Essays in Honor of Salo W. Baron won a National Jewish Book Award.They Called Me Mayer July: Painted Memories of a Jewish Childhood in Poland Before the Holocaust, which she coauthored with her father, Mayer Kirshenblatt, also won several awards.\r\n\r\nShe has been honored with an award for lifetime achievement by the Foundation for Jewish Culture, the Mlotek Prize for Yiddish and Yiddish Culture, the Marshall Sklare award for her contributions to the social scientific study of Jewry, an honorary doctorate from the Jewish Theological Seminary in New York, and most recently a medal from the President of Poland for her contribution to the creation of POLIN Museum of the History of Poland .
