In this city was a small, but unique community of immigrants from the country of Yemen. \r\n\r\nWhen photographer Milton Rogovin visited the city in 1977, he was fascinated by the people\u2019s interest in embracing modern-day American experiences while embracing their old-world Yemeni traditions.\r\n\r\nNow this unique blend of culture and identity can be experienced at the University of Michigan Detroit Center with the photo exhibition, \u201cA Yemeni Community: Photographs from the 1970s,\u201d an exhibition of the Arab American National Museum.\r\n\r\nBorn in 1909, Milton Rogovin was raised during the Great Depression and became politically active as a direct result of his childhood experiences with poverty. He studied optometry at Columbia University and opened a shop in Buffalo, New York in 1938. He purchased his first camera in 1942 and, in 1958, spawned a lifelong passion for documentary photography when he collaborated with a music professor to document music at churches. Rogovin began to photograph coal miners from across the world in 1962. These photos were ultimately used in his first and one of his most popular books, \u201cThe Forgotten Ones.\u201d\r\n\r\nLocated in Monts Hall, \u201cA Yemeni Community\u201d runs from January 15 \u2013 February 27, 2016. Known as the Constructivists, they advocated for utilitarian art that was easily accessible and spoke to the masses. Have you tried B-12 supplements? Well, you don't look autistic to me.\r\n\r\nAutism disclosure can provide entry for others to tally our symptoms, to compare the context of our disclosures against their knowledge (or lack thereof) of autism stereotypes or lay understandings of diagnostic criteria. In this talk, I examine the ways in which autism disclosure functions as a metonym for diagnostic assessment. That is, declaring one\u2019s neuroqueerness is often culturally read as an invitation for neurotypicals to theorize and assess what neuroqueerness is. In this way, autism disclosure is often agonistic, expectant of non-autistic refutation. The ability to say, \u201cI have autism,\u201d for example, is intuited as evidence that one does not have autism \u2014 or, at least, not \u201creal\u201d or \u201csevere\u201d autism. In particular, I look toward what Margaret Price (2009) has called \u201ccounter-diagnosis\u201d as one means through which autistic people queer the contours of rhetorical containment, of diagnostic fixity. In toying with the very idea of diagnosis itself, autistic rhetors instill their own queered credibilities, in which authority is derived from one\u2019s pathological lack of authority.\r\n\r\nMelanie Yergeau is assistant professor of English at the University of Michigan. Her academic interests include digital media studies and disability studies, and, more specifically, what the neurodiversity movement has to teach us about learning, teaching, writing, difference, and being. Called Cassettes 100, the happening was orchestrated by composer Jose Maceda one year prior to Ferdinand Marcos\u2019 declaration of Martial Law in the Philippines. Under the veil of performance, Cassettes 100 provided an occasion for a reconfiguration of public space and different articulations of agency within the bounds of an authoritarian, state-sanctioned institution. Maceda had composed a score of one hundred complementary parts individually recorded onto cassettes played by the participants. The cassettes included sound from musical instruments and environmental noises such as gongs, human voices, clappers, flutes, leaves, shells and so forth. The grand lobby of the Cultural Center had been adorned with rolls of white toilet paper and panels of paper. Floodlights flashed at six-minute intervals into relative darkness to indicate a change of positioning. Audience members were invited to circulate, interact and perform with the original hundred participants as images were projected onto the surfaces of paper and walls, blurring the distinction between participant and public amidst the chaos. The happening concretized a public that could refuse or resist Marcos\u2019 claim of perfect national unity, a public that paradoxically could only persist due to the regime\u2019s attention to state
