In this city was a small, but unique community of immigrants from the country of Yemen. \r\n\r\nWhen photographer Milton Rogovin visited the city in 1977, he was fascinated by the people\u2019s interest in embracing modern-day American experiences while embracing their old-world Yemeni traditions.\r\n\r\nNow this unique blend of culture and identity can be experienced at the University of Michigan Detroit Center with the photo exhibition, \u201cA Yemeni Community: Photographs from the 1970s,\u201d an exhibition of the Arab American National Museum.\r\n\r\nBorn in 1909, Milton Rogovin was raised during the Great Depression and became politically active as a direct result of his childhood experiences with poverty. He studied optometry at Columbia University and opened a shop in Buffalo, New York in 1938. He purchased his first camera in 1942 and, in 1958, spawned a lifelong passion for documentary photography when he collaborated with a music professor to document music at churches. Rogovin began to photograph coal miners from across the world in 1962. These photos were ultimately used in his first and one of his most popular books, \u201cThe Forgotten Ones.\u201d\r\n\r\nLocated in Monts Hall, \u201cA Yemeni Community\u201d runs from January 15 \u2013 February 27, 2016. The first decade was full of hope for a new social order that would reject the values and traditions of Tsarist rule. Centered in Moscow, a group of young artists, spearheaded in part by Vladimir (1899-1982) and Georgy Stenberg (1900-1933), championed an art that promoted the egalitarian ideals of the New Order and contributed to the growth of the Soviet Union. Known as the Constructivists, they advocated for utilitarian art that was easily accessible and spoke to the masses. Among their most provocative and visionary works were posters advertising Soviet films.\r\n\r\n\tUMMA\u2019s exhibition, Soviet Constructivist Posters: Branding the New Order features a selection of posters by the Stenbergs and other Constructivists for some of early cinema\u2019s most inventive films including, Sergei Eisenstein\u2019sOctober and Dziga Vertov\u2019s Man with a Movie Camera.\r\n\r\n\tUsing dynamic compositions, bold colors, and emblematic images, these posters announced that the Soviet Union was a progressive nation that could propel society into a utopian future. Their revolutionary aesthetic became associated with the workers\u2019 movement and helped to shape how it was understood both at home and abroad. Though Constructivism went out of favor in the 1930s with the rise of Joseph Stalin (1878\u20131953), Constructivist designs continued to have an influence abroad. Six years later, Prague\u2019s Stalin was obliterated with 1600 pounds of explosives. Paulina Bren will talk about what came next, about the vast plinth that thereafter remained empty, about the period of history known as late communism. While much has been written about the 1950s and 1960s, the 1970s and 1980s remain largely uncharted territory for historians. How can we begin to understand late communism as a distinct era? What, if anything, was normal about this period of so-called \u201cnormalization\u201d? Paulina Bren\u2019s lecture will focus on the post-1968 experience in the Eastern Bloc, with an emphasis on media and material consumption, their influence on everyday life, and the shaping of a new \u2018communist culture\u2019 in the aftermath of the Prague Spring.\r\n\r\nPaulina Bren is the author of The Greengrocer and His TV: The Culture of Communism after the 1968 Prague Spring (Cornell UP, 2010), which won the Council for European Studies 2012 Book Prize, the Austrian Studies Association 2012 Book Prize, and was shortlisted for the 2011 Vucinich Book Award. Scholars have particularly noted the way Rashid al-Din attempted to make the Dharma comprehensible to a Muslim audience by comparing Buddhist perceptions of Heaven and Hell to the Muslim visions of the afterlife and by ingeniously presenting the Buddha as a prophet with a book.\r\n\r\nFar less noted, however, are Rashid al-Din's extensive writings against the Buddhist dogma of reincarnation. This brief talk examines three treatises in which Rashid al-Din makes the case against the transmigration of souls and in favor of the resurrection of the bodies on the Day of Judgment.
