Given the complexity inherent in tissues, my laboratory is working towards the concept of \"Systems Tissue Engineering\", which indicates the dual need i) to develop systems capable of presenting combinations of factors that drive tissue growth, as well as ii) to incorporate systems biology approaches that can identify the appropriate combination of factors. Biomaterial scaffolds represent a central component of many approaches and provide the enabling tools for creating an environment and\/or deliver factors that can direct cellular processes toward tissue formation. We have developed scaffolds that are capable of capturing early metastatic cells, which can also reduce the burden of disease, and have been investigating the mechanisms by which the scaffold influences disease progression. \r\n\r\nThe ability to identify factors from amongst the complex biological milieu that are determining cell fate has been the focus of our systems biology efforts. We have developed a cellular array for the large scale profiling of transcription factor activity throughout the duration of in vitro culture, which we propose can identify the factors necessary to drive cells towards the desired phenotype. This array represents a novel systems biology tool for molecularly dissecting cell fate decisions. \r\n\r\nAbout the speaker\r\nLonnie Shea is a Professor of Chemical and Bioengineering at the University of Michigan. He frequently collaborates with his wife, Jacqueline Jeruss, M.D., Ph.D., an associate professor in the Department of Surgery at the U-M Medical School. They collaborated to create the implantable \u201ccancer magnet\u201d to diagnose the presence of circulating cancer cells. One notable change has been the rise of partisan media sources. How do partisan media sources influence public opinion? We address this question by exploring not only how partisan media directly influence individuals\u2019 attitudes, but also how interpersonal discussions shape the impact of partisan media. We present experimental results showing that, depending on the nature of the discussion group, conversations can nullify or amplify partisan media effects. Perhaps more importantly, we also find that those who are not directly exposed to partisan media are still susceptible to its effects. This occurs via a two-stage process such that exposed individuals influence those who have not been previously exposed. The first decade was full of hope for a new social order that would reject the values and traditions of Tsarist rule. Centered in Moscow, a group of young artists, spearheaded in part by Vladimir (1899-1982) and Georgy Stenberg (1900-1933), championed an art that promoted the egalitarian ideals of the New Order and contributed to the growth of the Soviet Union. Known as the Constructivists, they advocated for utilitarian art that was easily accessible and spoke to the masses. Among their most provocative and visionary works were posters advertising Soviet films.\r\n\r\n\tUMMA\u2019s exhibition, Soviet Constructivist Posters: Branding the New Order features a selection of posters by the Stenbergs and other Constructivists for some of early cinema\u2019s most inventive films including, Sergei Eisenstein\u2019sOctober and Dziga Vertov\u2019s Man with a Movie Camera.\r\n\r\n\tUsing dynamic compositions, bold colors, and emblematic images, these posters announced that the Soviet Union was a progressive nation that could propel society into a utopian future. Their revolutionary aesthetic became associated with the workers\u2019 movement and helped to shape how it was understood both at home and abroad. Though Constructivism went out of favor in the 1930s with the rise of Joseph Stalin (1878\u20131953), Constructivist designs continued to have an influence abroad. At the same time the society is experiencing class cleavages as the gap between the rich\/new rich versus the poor\/very poor has increased (as starkly brought to attention by the student uprisings of 2015). This paper explores the sociolinguistic consequences of these changes in South Africa. One theme that will be discussed at an introductory level is the effect of change on the indigenous African languages, and the scope for their improved status. More salient sociolinguistically is the strengthening of a notably \u201cAfrican\u201d variety of L2 English, labelled \u201cBlack South African English\u201d. The features of this variety that show what I call substrate fidelity will be discussed. In contrast is the rise of a \u201ccrossover\u201d variety showing little or no such allegiance, as middle-class young Black speakers depart significantly from the traditional L2 of their parents\u2019 generation. This will be the main linguistic focus of the paper, using two related sets of variables: the realisation of schwa as a full vowel, and neutralizations of vowel length. These are studied via the techniques of acoustic sociophonetics, using forced alignment. The first result concerns social class, consequent upon a bifurcation of young Black people according to type of schooling (elite or not). The second result is that there is a consistent gender effect among young people, in contrast to the previous generation\u2019s English. The paper explores the socio-symbolic reasons for this gender differentiation, via commentaries in the press as well as young peoples\u2019 own attitudes.
